Contestation and Curriculum: the Efforts of Chinese Patriots in Hong Kong, 1946–1984
Journal of Basic Education, Vol. 17 No. 2, 2008 © The Chinese University of Hong Kong 2008 基礎教育學報,第十七卷第二期,二零零八年 © 香港中文大學 2008 Contestation and Curriculum: The Efforts of Chinese Patriots in Hong Kong, 1946–1984 Chui-Shan LAU Department of Education Studies Hong Kong Baptist University By restoring the memories of collective struggles over the colonial government education and by analyzing the curriculum of the patriotic schools, I aim to demonstrate the power of school itself in reconstructing an alternative curriculum in an apolitical and de- nationalistic Hong Kong. The education system is constantly struggling over the meaning of its goals, its contents, its operations and its assessments. As Lau Siu-kai suggested in the 1980s, Hong Kong appeared as a minimally-integrated social-political system, where utilitarianistic familism and apolitical attitude were prevailed. Through this cross-disciplinary research, we have witnessed the formation and consolidation of an anti-hegemonic nationalistic curriculum appeared in local patriotic schools during the period of 1946–1984. Key words: alternative nationalistic curriculum, counter-hegemony, power of school 126 Chui-Shan LAU Introduction The social history of patriotic schools showed the autonomous forces of the educational system. By restoring the memories of collective struggles over the colonial government education and by analyzing the curriculum of the patriotic schools, I aim to demonstrate the power of school itself in reconstructing an alternative nationalistic curriculum in Hong Kong. The education system is constantly struggling over the meaning of its goals, its contents, its operations and its assessments (Beyer & Apple, 1998). Although scholars such as Green (1990) and Curtis (1988) pose education as a dependent variable determined by the dominant groups, other scholars, in this case, do not simply consider education as mere exercise of forces of the government. -

Astronomy Education in China, Hong Kong Or on This Document Please Contact the Office of Astronomy for Education ([email protected])
Astronomy Education in China, Hong Kong This overview is part of the project "Astronomy Education Worldwide" of the International Astronomical Union's Office of Astronomy for Education. More information: https://astro4edu.org/worldwide Structure of education: Usually, children start their learning in kindergartens from 3 to 6 years old. It is followed by 6-year formal education in mainstream primary education (taught in Chinese, English and Mandarin). Secondary school is compulsory for 6 years, studying all subjects for the first 3 years and registering their interested subjects (from Liberal Arts, Science and Business) as electives for the remaining 3 years. There would be Territory-wide System Assessments for P.3, P.6 and F.3 students every year for evaluating the overall learning standard of students. All twelve years of education at public schools are free of charge if studying at government and aided schools. In the final year of secondary studies, Form 6 Students need to prepare for the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Examination to fulfill requirements for higher-level studies. As for Post-secondary Education, there are multiple study pathways, such as 4-year bachelor’s degree programs and 2-year sub-degree programs. For non-Chinese speaking students and foreign nationals, there are also some international schools and private schools in primary and secondary education. They will continue their further studies to overseas universities or high-level educational colleges after another public examination, such as GCE A-Level and IB Diploma (different curriculum comparing to the mainstream education). Education facilities: Hong Kong schools have typical class sizes of around 25 to 30 students, students usually would have the same timetables from primary to secondary (P.1-P.6 and F.1-F.3). -
