With the advent of email and electronic communication, we face a continuous barrage of words that threatens to undermine communication altogether.It is all the more significant that above this din some few words retain significant meaning. Such were the words of Senator J. William Fulbright when he observed that The essence of intercultural education is the acquisition of empathy the ability to see the world as others see it, and to allow for the possibility that others may see something we have failed to see, or may see it more accurately.' The essays presented in this volume reflect the finest efforts in people-to-people communication and its concomitant empathy. As importantly, the participants in this program are teachers who will have opportunities to share this empathy with countless students in years to come. If every teacher from every country in the world were able to participate in programs such as thisour world would be a far, and better, different place. It remains surprisingly true that, despite our increasingly complex and interconnected world, peoples of different countries and cultures do not know one another well. Many have pointed out that Americans are almost frustratingly uninformed of other peoples and cultures, and cliches as to our failings in cultural knowledge and history abound. What is much less talked about is the peoples in other countries are also uninformed about the world at large and particularly about the United States. It is no exaggeration to note that the cinema remains the primary vehicle for learning about America. While this lack of intercultural knowledge and understanding is lamentable, it is more rewardingas well as more funto acknowledge and celebrate the wonderful stimulation and productivity that results when people do find opportunities to learn about the share cultural differences. This is the crux of this Fulbright program in all of its components, and the group of American educators who participated in the Malaysia/Singapore Program for 2001 have demonstrated the positive outcomes for this cultural and educational exchange program. The sixteen papers included in this volume reflect growth and understanding at its very best.It is safe to say that few of these papers could have been written before the authors experienced this program. The diversity reflected in the topics is suggestive of the broad and varied interests of individual participants, but their collective knowledge represents growth and intercultural understanding exactly as Senator Fulbright hoped for this program. Congratulations to the group of authors for their very creative writing and to those whose hard work in planning, organizing and implementing the program made the learning possible. And a heart-felt thanks to the U.S. Department of State for supporting the program and the U.S.Congress for providing the funding needed to sustain it. U.S.E.D FULBRIGHT-HAYS SEMINARS ABROAD PROGRAM MALAYSIA/SINGAPORE JULY 1 - AUGUST 12, 2001 OBJECTIVES The general objective of the program is to help U.S. educators enhance their international understanding and increase their knowledge of the people and culture of other countries. Upon their return to the United States, participants are expected to share their acquired knowledge and experiences with students, colleagues, members of civic and professional organizations, and the public in their home communities. The objectives of the program in Malaysia were to offer participants an overview of life in Malaysia and Singapore. Specifically to acquaint the participants with: 1. The history, economics, geography and culture of Malaysia and Singapore; 2. The cultural diversity of Malaysia and Singapore and to appreciate the multicultural nature of these societies; 3. The contributions of the peoples of Malaysia and Singapore in the areas of art, music, dance, science and technology; 4. The systems of education in Malaysia and Singapore. PROGRAM The program included seminars and other activities designed to provide participants with a comprehensive overview of how the people of Malaysia and Singapore live, work and strive towards their vision of moving towards a more modern society and secure east-west relationships, without sacrificing their history or culture. During the six-week visit, presentations were given by professors from universities and other institutions in Malaysia and Singapore. The lectures were interspersed with visits to relevant nearby sites of interest. During the five-week study tour of Malaysia, the seminars were offered relating to Malaysia's geography and history, political structure, cultural plurality, religions, economy, educational system, aspirations and goals for the future, and contemporary issues facing society. Participants were also introduced to Malaysia and the Malaysian way of life through talks, discussions 5 and field trips to schools, educational institutions and cultural centers, not only around Kuala Lumpur but also in other parts of the country. They traveled to Melaka, Terengganu, Kelantan, Penang, Perak and Sarawak. Visits were made to places of historical interest, places of worship and towns and villages. School visits were also arranged. Places were chosen to reflect the diversity of the nation's life and culture. During the travel phase, opportunities were provided for participants to interact with Malaysian involved with. education, culture, development planning, etc. On a personal level, participants also had opportunities to spend time with Malaysians in their homes. As far as possible, these home-stays were arranged with Malaysians who have interests in common with individual participants. One week of academic seminars and visits in Singapore

([email protected]) Abstrak Isu mengenai Anti Hadis di Malaysia bermula pada tahun 1986 ekoran daripada penulisan kontroversi bertajuk Hadis Satu Penilaian Semula oleh Kassim Ahmad. Di dalam buku tersebut, beliau cuba mengupas masalah perpecahan ummah. Menurut beliau, keimanan kepada Hadis sebagai sumber rujukan selepas al-Quran telah menjadi faktor utama perpecahan ummah tersebut. Oleh yang demikian, golongan Anti Hadis menyarankan supaya umat Islam merujuk kepada al-Quran sahaja sebagai panduan hidup. Artikel ini akan membahaskan tentang fahaman Anti Hadis dan hubungannya dengan pemikiran Islam liberal. Kajian ini berbentuk kualitatif – analisis kandungan yang akan menjelaskan tentang pemikiran Anti Hadis melalui penulisan Kassim Ahmad. Kajian mendapati bahawa Anti- Hadis meneruskan gagasan-gagasan idea yang dibawa oleh kumpulan Islam Liberal seperti mengkritik ulama dan pemahaman Islam semasa, dasar keterbukaan kepada semua fahaman dan ideologi serta mentafsir nas secara historis dan hermeneutik. Kata Kunci: Anti Hadis, Kassim Ahmad dan Islam Liberal 1. Pengenalan Islam liberal adalah sebuah ideologi yang semakin berkembang dalam kehidupan masyarakat Islam kini. Gerakan Islam Liberal mengambil landskap Renaissance di Barat sebagai asas kepada semangat pembebasan yang mereka inginkan. Jika John Locke, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Adam Smith dan lain-lain tokoh liberal di Barat telah berjaya membentuk satu kehidupan baru dalam kehidupan masyarakat Barat dengan idea-idea pemebebasan, sekular dan individualistik, maka umat Islam juga mampu membangunkan masyarakat mereka dengan cara tersebut. Walaupun tidak seratus peratus sama, namun mereka bersetuju dengan kerangka pemikir Barat tersebut yang menuntut usaha pembaharuan dalam memahami agama dan nas dalam kehidupan moden.

He is a firm believer of freedom of expression and racial equality. His plays become his didactic tool to express his dismay and frustration towards the folly and malfunctions in the society. He believes that everybody needs to rise and eliminate their fear from speaking their minds regardless of race, status and gender. In all four of his plays, Kee has featured and centralised his female characters by empowering them with voice and agency. Kee gives fair treatment to his women by painting them as strong, liberated, determined and fearless beings. Armed with the literary tools of feminist dialogics which is derived from Bakhtin’s theory of dialogism and strategies of historical re-visioning, this study investigates and explores Kee’s representations of his female characters and the various ways that he has liberated them from being passive and silent beings as they contest the norms, values and even traditions.

The concentration of six heavy metals such as Cu, Cr, Ni, Cd, Zn and Mn were studied in the soils around Perlis. The aim of the study is to assess the heavy metals contamination distribution due to industrialisation and agricultural activities. Soil samples were collected at depth of 0 – 15 cm in five stations around Perlis. The soil samples are subjected to soil extraction and the concentration of heavy metals was determined via ICP - OES. Overall concentrations of Cr, Cu, Zn, Ni, Cd and Mn in the soil samples ranged from 0.003 - 0.235 mg/L, 0.08 - 41.187 mg/L, 0.065 - 45.395 mg/L, 0.031 - 2.198 mg/L, 0.01 - 0.174 mg/L and 0.165 - 63.789 mg/L respectively. The concentration of heavy metals in the soil showed the following decreasing trend, Mn > Zn > Cu > Ni > Cr > Cd. From the result, the level of heavy metals in the soil near centralised Chuping industrial areas gives maximum value compared to other locations in Perlis.     MISC. HERITAGE NEWS –March to July 2017 What did we spot on the Sarawak and regional heritage scene in the last five months? SARAWAK Land clearing observed early March just uphill from the Bongkissam archaeological site, Santubong, raised alarm in the heritage-sensitive community because of the known archaeological potential of the area (for example, uphill from the shrine, partial excavations undertaken in the 1950s-60s at Bukit Maras revealed items related to the Indian Gupta tradition, tentatively dated 6 to 9th century). The land in question is earmarked for an extension of Santubong village. The bulldozing was later halted for a few days for Sarawak Museum archaeologists to undertake a rapid surface assessment, conclusion of which was that “there was no (…) artefact or any archaeological remains found on the SPK site” (Borneo Post). Greenlight was subsequently given by the Sarawak authorities to get on with the works. There were talks of relocating the shrine and, in the process, it appeared that the Bongkissam site had actually never been gazetted as a heritage site. In an e-statement, the Sarawak Heritage Society mentioned that it remained interrogative and called for due diligences rules in preventive archaeology on development sites for which there are presumptions of historical remains. Dr Charles Leh, Deputy Director of the Sarawak Museum Department mentioned an objective to make the Santubong Archaeological Park a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2020. Sabah and Sarawak cover the northern coast of the island. The lower two‐thirds of Borneo is Kalimantan, which belongs to Indonesia. The area has a fascinating history, and probably because it is on one of the main trade routes through South East Asia, Borneo has had many masters. Sabah and Sarawak were incorporated into the Federation of Malaysia in 1963 and Malaysia is now regarded a safe and orderly Islamic country. Sabah has a diverse ethnic population of just over 3 million people with 32 recognised ethnic groups. The largest of these is the Malays (these include the many different cultural groups that originally existed in their own homeland within Sabah), Chinese and “non‐official immigrants” (mainly Filipino and Indonesian). In recent centuries piracy was common here, but it is now generally considered relatively safe for cruising. However, the nearby islands of Southern Philippines have had some problems with militant fundamentalist Muslim groups – there have been riots and violence on Mindanao and the Tawi Tawi Islands and isolated episodes of kidnapping of people from Sabah in the past 10 years or so.

    MISC. HERITAGE NEWS – Aug-Sept-Oct 2016 SARAWAK The Brooke Gallery, Fort Margherita and the new “Urang Sarawak” exhibition at the Sarawak Museum opened in September, just 4 days apart. Both are valuable additions to the Sarawak history and heritage scene. We reproduce below our web articles of 29 and 31 Oct. 2016 on these exhibits. The Brooke Gallery is a joint effort of the Brooke Heritage Trust, Sarawak’s Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, and its Museum Department. It “showcases the history of Sarawak under its White Rajahs with a focus on the many community leaders who worked together with (the Brooke) family to build the foundations of the state” writes Jason Brooke, who heads the Brooke Trust. An interesting part of the exhibition illustrates the -not so well known by the younger generations- anti-cession movement that developed when Sarawak was ceded by the Brooke to the British Crown as a colony at the end of WW2 – in a global context where the decolonization movement had already developed across the British Empire. The Gallery’s clean and lean presentation, and Fort Margherita itself, which was built by the Brookes and which benefitted from quality conservation works a few years ago, form now a key heritage landmark. The project has mobilized a group of enthusiastic volunteers, known as the “Fort Rangers”. And colonial style “tea party” was organized by the Friends of Sarawak Museum on the day of the Gallery’s inauguration. Naturally, historical legacies such the century of Brooke rule will always remain subject to discussion, as was recalled by a demonstration, on the day Gallery inauguration by a local group –which made Sarawak’s Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture point out that the gallery did not seek to glorify the Brookes, adding: “History is still history and we cannot erase them from us.
