As our brothers and sisters across Israel are once again facing rocket attacks, we turn to you, our dearest partners and closest allies, to aid us in providing critical support to those most deeply impacted by indiscriminate acts of terror. The security situation in Israel, particularly in the southern region, has deteriorated dramatically over the past few days and the need for intervention is immediate. Incessant rocket attacks have heightened the risk for local residents and as a result, schools have been periodically closed with families sleeping in bomb shelters. The damage caused by these attacks creates psychological, emotional, and financial ramifications. The trauma suffered may take years to even begin to heal from, and the after-effects could last a lifetime. Supported by Keren Hayesod-United Israel Appeal, The Jewish Agency’s Fund for Victims of Terror provides immediate financial assistance to bereaved families who have lost loved ones or suffered injuries due to terror attacks. We are currently seeking additional funds to respond to the current situation and ensure the safety and security of our nation and build long-term resilience among those who are impacted the most by the security situation and ongoing rocket attacks. The following items represent the most urgent needs during this current wave of rocket fire and acts of terror.

It includes new acquisitions of material, which have been received recently at the CZA. In addition, a new section has been added, the Maps and Plans Section. Some of the collections that make up this section did appear in the previous Guide, but did not make up a separate section. The decision to collect the various collections in one section reflects the large amount of maps and plans that have been acquired in the last two years and the advancements made in this sphere at the CZA. Similarly, general information about two additional collections has been added in the Guide, the Collection of Announcements and the Collection of Badges. Explanation of the symbols, abbreviations and the structure of the Guide: Dates appearing alongside the record groups names, signify: - with regard to institutional archives: the period in which the material that is stored in the CZA was created. - with regard to personal archives: the birth and death dates of the person. Dates have not been given for living people. The numbers in the right-hand margin signify the amount of material comprising the record group, in running meters of shelf space (one running meter includes six boxes of archival material).

    BACKGROUND UNITED ISRAEL APPEAL THE JEWISH FEDERATIONS OF NORTH AMERICA _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ History United Israel Appeal (“UIA”) was first established in 1925 as the United Palestine Appeal (“UPA”) in order to unify fundraising in America for a Jewish national homeland. Keren Hayesod, the fundraising organization for the Jewish Agency, Hadassah, Hebrew University, the Jewish National Fund and Mizrachi were the constituents. UPA was dissolved in 1930 and reconstituted in 1936 by Keren Hayesod and the Jewish National Fund. In 1938, UPA entered into a partnership with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (“JDC”) to found the United Jewish Appeal (“UJA”). UIA has undergone vast changes since those early days. In addition to the partnership begun in 1938, the most significant changes prior to 2000 came in 1971 as a result of the reconstitution of the Jewish Agency for Israel. After the Reconstitution Agreement, for the first time, American Jewish leaders from federations, as well as all the American Zionist organizations, served as members of the UIA Board. UIA was allocated 30% of the seats on the Board of Governors (“BOG”) of the Jewish Agency. UIA appointed federation representatives to the Jewish Agency Board, while the American Zionist organizations had seats on the Jewish Agency Board through their membership in the World Zionist Organization (“WZO”). The Reconstitution Agreement in 1971 was followed by UIA naming the Jewish Agency for Israel as its exclusive operating agent in Israel. In 1999, United Jewish Communities (“UJC”) was created as a merger of UIA, National UJA and the Council of Jewish Federations (“CJF”), into a single, national organization.

    A CHANCE NOT TAKEN Zionist–Hungarian diplomatic co-operation in the second half of the 1930s Attila Novák In Hungary between the two world wars Zionism was an ideological current which aroused deep resistance in the ranks of both the political right-wing and the Jewish leadership. Zionism, an ideology which tried to reformulate the definition of Jews as a people, could not count much on allies, since it sharply opposed assimilation, which had traditionally been the stance of the official Jewish establishment, which considered the Jews a part of the Hungarian nation. At the same time, the Hungarian state and the political right-wing opposed the Zionist movement for two reasons: on the one hand, they regarded it as a form of Jewish separatism, and therefore contrary to the concept of the Hungarian nation-state; on the other hand, the officials of the Horthy regime, deeply imbued with anti-communist fears after the Commune of 1919, regarded even non-communist leftists as potentially dangerous communists. Zionists were a minority of a minority, their political status and social acceptance was very low, so the leading liberal and other organs referred to them only in cases of scandal and police investigations. The idea of an independent Jewish nation-state was rejected by all the players in Hungarian Jewish and non-Jewish political society, therefore the official tone used by Hungarian Zionist leaders was compassionate and ardently Hungarian nationalist. The ideological position and policy of the Zionists was quite exceptional. The majority of Hungarian Jewry and the official Jewish organisations (religious communities) considered themselves true Hungarian patriots, whose Jewishness (as a unique distinctive feature) was limited to the special Jewish ‘faith’.

    The Journal of Israeli History Vol. 29, No. 1, March 2010, 99–123 Hotel design in British Mandate Palestine: Modernism and the Zionist vision Daniella Ohad Smith* From the early 1920s through the 1930s, an important yet forgotten avant-garde architectural phenomenon developed in the Zionist community of British Mandate Palestine. In cities and resort regions across the country, several dozen modernist hotels were built for a new type of visitor: the Zionist tourist. Often the most architecturally significant structures in their locales and designed by leading local architects educated in some of Europe’s most progressive schools, these hotels were conceived along ideological lines and represented a synthesis of social requirements, cutting-edge aesthetics, and utopian national ideals. They responded to a complex mixture of sentiments, including European standards of modern comfort and the longing to remake Palestine, the historical homeland of the Jewish people, for a newly liberated, progressive nation. This article focuses on Jerusalem’s most ambitious modernist hotel, the Eden Hotel, to evaluate how the architecture of tourism became a political and aesthetic tool in the promotion of Zionist Palestine.
