British Cars | 70s Cars The family car is an essential part of the automotive trade. The car can often be considered like the centre of the family: a way to get everyone together, go on road trips, visit places… and spend time together in a confined space for better or worse, almost as an extension of the home. Our very own Danielle Bagnall has homed in on just a handful of best-selling cars from the swinging s. In even electric car technology got a look in, with Ford showing off a prototype of a sodium-sulphur battery which was some 15 times lighter than the average battery on the market at the time. Marketed under a number of model names, the Austin and Morris were the most prolific with Austin-badged ADO16s built at Longbridge while Morris variants were assembled at Cowley. The model itself was designed by Alec Issigonis designer British Family Cars of the 1950s and 60s the Mini and was based around the familiar package of transversely-mounted A-Series unit powering the front wheels only. As for its popularity, in for example, the was the best-selling car by 41, units, selling a total ofspit between MGAustinVanden Plas Princess, Wolseley and Riley Kestrel. Ford Anglia Continuing a model name which had been used since the s, the fourth Anglia variant, the E, was introduced at the British Family Cars of the 1950s and 60s part of and came in two-door saloon, two-door panel van and three-door estate guises. The new model featured American-influenced styling, along with a new backward-slanting rear window which the marketing people assured buyers British Family Cars of the 1950s and 60s help leave the screen clear of rain. Also new was a four-speed manual gearbox, as well as new electrically-powered windscreen wipers — replacing the vacuum wipers of previous Anglias. Despite being higher in the selling stakes though, the Cortina was a bit big to be purely a family car and would sit more comfortably in the company car bracket. In Septemberthe Anglia Super arrived sporting a new cc version of the Kent engine, paired with an all-synchromesh gearbox. The Super was distinguished from the outside via a British Family Cars of the 1950s and 60s contrasting-colour swage line. The Anglia would be replaced by the Escort in which would go on to create its own legend. Vauxhall Viva Produced between andthe Ellesmere Port-built Vauxhall Viva rivalled the family offerings from Morris and Ford, with three variants of the model produced between and The HA was marketed as being lightweight and easy to operate, with short gearchanges and lighter steering in a hope to attract more women to the model. WESSEX VEHICLE PRESERVATION CLUB FOUNDED 1971 www.wvpc.org.uk ‘WESSEX WAYS’ FEBRUARY 2020 VEHICLE OF THE MONTH The Austin Cambridge (sold as A40, A50, A55, and A60) is a motor car range produced by the Austin Motor Company, in several generations, from September 1954 through to 1971 as cars and to 1973 as light commercials. It replaced the A40 Somerset and was entirely new, with modern unibody construction. The range had two basic body styles with the A40, A50, and early A55 using a traditional rounded shape and later A55 Mark IIs and A60s using Pininfarina styling. The A40 number was re-used on a smaller car (the Austin A40 Farina) from 1958 to 1968, and the Cambridge name had previously been used to designate one of the available body styles on the pre-war 10 hp range. The Austin Cambridge was initially offered only with a four-passenger, four-door saloon body, although a few pre-production two-door models were also made. It had a modern body design with integrated wings and a full-width grille. Independent suspension was provided at the front by coil springs and wishbones while a live axle with anti-roll bar was retained at the rear. A van derivative introduced in November 1956 and a coupé utility (pick up) introduced in May 1957 and remained available until 1974, some three years after the demise of the cars on which they had been based. A40 CAMBRIDGE A 1.2-litre straight-four pushrod engine B-Series engine based on the one used in the previous Austin Somerset (although sharing no parts) powered the new Austin Cambridge.

Ludvigsen papers, 1905-2011. Archival Collection 26 Title: Karl E. Ludvigsen papers, 1905-2011. Creator: Ludvigsen, Karl E. Call Number: Archival Collection 26 Quantity: 931 cubic feet (514 flat archival boxes, 98 clamshell boxes, 29 filing cabinets, 18 record center cartons, 15 glass plate boxes, 8 oversize boxes). Abstract: The Karl E. Ludvigsen papers 1905-2011 contain his extensive research files, photographs, and prints on a wide variety of automotive topics. The papers reflect the complexity and breadth of Ludvigsen’s work as an author, researcher, and consultant. Approximately 70,000 of his photographic negatives have been digitized and are available on the Revs Digital Library. Thousands of undigitized prints in several series are also available but the copyright of the prints is unclear for many of the images. Ludvigsen’s research files are divided into two series: Subjects and Marques, each focusing on technical aspects, and were clipped or copied from newspapers, trade publications, and manufacturer’s literature, but there are occasional blueprints and photographs. Some of the files include Ludvigsen’s consulting research and the records of his Ludvigsen Library. Scope and Content Note: The Karl E. Ludvigsen papers are organized into eight series. The series largely reflects Ludvigsen’s original filing structure for paper and photographic materials. Series 1. Subject Files [11 filing cabinets and 18 record center cartons] The Subject Files contain documents compiled by Ludvigsen on a wide variety of automotive topics, and are in general alphabetical order.
