Stonewall Center UMass Events and Announcements Last Day to Submit to the LGBTQIA+ Art Show To mark the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in June 2019, the UMass Stonewall Center is curating an art exhibit -- “LGBTQIA+ Identity, Community, and Activism Today” -- for March 18-23 in the UMass Student Union Art Gallery, which is temporarily located in 310 Bartlett Hall. Submissions in all art mediums are welcomed, including painting, photography, sculpture, film and projected media, and performance. Submissions are open to all and the work does not need to be explicitly LGBTQIA+. To submit a work or to sign up to perform, please fill out the form here. The opening visual arts reception/performance night is March 19 from 6-9 p.m. Art show Facebook page. The deadline for submissions is March 1. Rec Center LGBTQIA+ WorkOUT Group The Stonewall Center is organizing an LGBTQIA+ and allies workout group to meet at the Rec Center as often as the group desires. LGBTQIA+ Health Fair Monday, March 4, Noon-3 p.m. UMass Rec Center (by the Courtside Café) The fair will include LGBTQIA+ supportive physical, mental, and sexual resources; free massages; therapy dogs; and STI testing LGBTQIA+ Art Making Night: Yarn Arts Monday, March 4, 5-7 p.m., 201 Wilder Hall The LGBTQIA+ Art Night Series is intended for Five College students and community members to make art and to give those who are interested in participating in the LGBTQIA+ Art Show and Performance Showcase a space, materials, and supportive community to work on their submissions. Facebook event page. The March 4th craft night is focused on yarn arts. Local artists will teach knitting, crocheting and cross stitching. Supplies, patterns, and snacks provided, and all skill levels are encouraged to attend. Trans Support Group Weekly Meeting Tuesday, March 5 (and every Tues.), 6:30-8 p.m. 302 University Health Services (UHS) This is a weekly drop-in group for UMass students who identify as trans or gender nonconforming. Not sure if you should come out to the class you are a TA for? Seeking support for coming out to family or friends? Come to the LGBTQIA+ Graduate Student Support Group! This bi-weekly group is peer-led and facilitated and focuses on building community between LGBTQIA+ graduate students. Future dates are March 5, March 19, April 2, April 16, and April 30. Monthly Queer and Trans People of Color Dinner Wednesday, March 6, 6-8 p.m. Stonewall Center, Crampton Hall Are you a queer/trans person of color who wants to make connections and build community with other QTPOC on campus? Join us for dinner! Future dinners will be on April 3 and May 1. The dinner theme is Soul Food Night. LGBTQIA+ Support Groups Wednesday, March 6 (and every Wed.), 6:30-8 p.m., 102 Wilder Hall (CMASS) Thursday, March 7 (and every Thurs.), 3-4:30 p.m., Middlesex House (CCPH) These are safe and affirming space to explore sexual orientation and gender identity, share experiences, make friends and build community, and learn about resources. Preregistration is not required; students can drop-in at any time. Documentary Screening and Community Dialogue: At the River I Stand Thursday, March 7 12:30-1: lunch; 1-2: film screening; 2-2:30: community dialogue The documentary tells the story of the 1968 Memphis, Tennessee sanitation workers strike and its connection to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the civil rights movement, and AFSCME's early organizing of public sector workers in the south. Facebook event page. STI and Rapid HIV Testing Wednesday, March 27, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., 163 Campus Center Testing is open to all UMass students. No appointment needed. Bring your health insurance card; other payment options available. STI testing is for gonorrhea and chlamydia. HIV testing involves a finger prick and results are available in 20-30 minutes. Other spring testing dates are April 9 and April 22. America in Transition: Documentaries about Trans People of Color Thursday, March 28, 7-8:30 p.m. Bernie Dallas Room, Goodell Hall A screening and discussion of three short documentaries (each 20 minutes) on the lives and experiences of trans people of color in the U.S. Facebook event page. Jabberwocky Is Open for Submissions for Spring 2019 Jabberwocky is the English Society’s official undergraduate literary journal. Submissions can include short fiction, poems, literary criticism/nonfiction, and visual art and the deadline is April 3. Please email all submissions as attachments here.
