We would love to hear from you about your own personal favourites. Pictured here, in a new posting, is our Vice-President, Wayne Sleep with Freddie Mercury and Elton John. Did you know, Freddie Mercury danced for the Royal Ballet? He performed in specially choreographed versions of Bohemian Rhapsody and Crazy Little Thing Called Love at a charity gala in 1979. A few years later, as a kind of cultural exchange, the Royal Ballet danced for Freddie Mercury, in the video for Queen's I Want to Break Free. The Merry Wives of Windsor Our very own Liz Schafer will be giving a talk at a Study Day at Shakespeare’s Globe - a day of talks, workshops, seminars and lively discussion on The Merry Wives of Windsor. This is an opportunity to meet like-minded audience members and explore the key themes and interpretations in the play with Globe artists and leading Shakespeare scholars. Professor Liz Schafer will run a session on 'How to become a Merry Wife and Influence People'. She will explore how the shrewd women in the play are able to be both merry and honest as well as disciplining the wayward men that surround them. Nickolas Grace Over the summer VWs President Nickolas Grace and Una Stubbs performed together as part of the Gillian Lynne Memorial at the West End Theatre named after her. -

J Ohn F. a Ndrews
J OHN F . A NDREWS OBE JOHN F. ANDREWS is an editor, educator, and cultural leader with wide experience as a writer, lecturer, consultant, and event producer. From 1974 to 1984 he enjoyed a decade as Director of Academic Programs at the FOLGER SHAKESPEARE LIBRARY. In that capacity he redesigned and augmented the scope and appeal of SHAKESPEARE QUARTERLY, supervised the Library’s book-publishing operation, and orchestrated a period of dynamic growth in the FOLGER INSTITUTE, a center for advanced studies in the Renaissance whose outreach he extended and whose consortium grew under his guidance from five co-sponsoring universities to twenty-two, with Duke, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Penn, Penn State, Princeton, Rutgers, Virginia, and Yale among the additions. During his time at the Folger, Mr. Andrews also raised more than four million dollars in grant funds and helped organize and promote the library’s multifaceted eight- city touring exhibition, SHAKESPEARE: THE GLOBE AND THE WORLD, which opened in San Francisco in October 1979 and proceeded to popular engagements in Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Dallas, Atlanta, New York, Los Angeles, and Washington. Between 1979 and 1985 Mr. Andrews chaired America’s National Advisory Panel for THE SHAKESPEARE PLAYS, the BBC/TIME-LIFE TELEVISION canon. He then became one of the creative principals for THE SHAKESPEARE HOUR, a fifteen-week, five-play PBS recasting of the original series, with brief documentary segments in each installment to illuminate key themes; these one-hour programs aired in the spring of 1986 with Walter Matthau as host and Morgan Bank and NEH as primary sponsors. -

Europa Regina: the Effect of World War II on European Female Labor
Europa Regina: The Effect of World War II on European Female Labor Helen Harris Advisor: Carol Shiue, Economics Honors Council Representative: Martin Boileau, Economics Committee Member: Lorraine Bayard de Volo, Women and Gender Studies April 7th, 2017 ________ Previous research suggests that WWII induced a lasting increase in American female labor force participation. This paper explores if WWII influenced European female labor force participation in a similar way from 1940 to 1960. The analysis regresses changes in female labor force participation after the war, on changes in military mobilization rates for 17 European countries. The results show that the European female labor force participation growth rate decreased during the decade 1940-1950 and increased from 1940-1960. While these results are statistically significant and female specific, they are relatively small in magnitude. Within these changes were sectoral changes, primarily a decrease in white-collar growth for both time frames. The mechanisms for these changes most likely stem from a post-war baby boom and an increase in national education levels. ________ 1. Introduction World War II caused political upheaval, transformations in foreign policy, and economic disruption for countries across the world. A less noticeable, but still important, change that the war sparked was a long-term increase in female labor force participation in the United States (Goldin and Olivetti, 2013). Goldin and others argue that the massive military personnel mobilization during the war created vacuums in the male dominated work force, which were filled by women. While the long-term impact varied depending on women’s socio-economic level, familial status, and education, this experience of drastic mobilization changes may have had a hand in transforming the American female labor supply into what is seen today (Goldin and Olivetti, 2013). -
