Michelin Tyres Showcase Their Performance and Versatility Package in Poland MEDIA INFORMATION 2016 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) PZM Rally Poland Michelin tyres showcase their performance and versatility package in Poland Like the upcoming Rally Finland (July 28-31), Rally Poland features narrow, ultra-fast stages which are contested at exceptionally high average speeds. The total length of the 2016 event was 1,253.29km, including 306.10km divided into 21 special stages which took place in mixed weather conditions, ranging from extremely hot – with temperatures of up to 35°C on Friday afternoon – to damp. To provide its WRC and WRC2 partners with the necessary combination of safety and performance for this difficult challenge, Michelin Motorsport took the MICHELIN LTX Force H4 (hard compound) and S4 (soft) to Poland for the former, and the MICHELIN Latitude Cross H90 and S80 for the latter. “We were spared rain during the stages but there were heavy showers two nights running,” reports Jacques Morelli, manager of Michelin’s World Rally Championship programme. “The main effect of this was that the dust stayed on the ground, but it also made the going softer because the Polish stages are particularly loose and sandy. Once again, our tyres needed to cover a wide range of conditions. Our partners monopolised the podium in WRC2, but we faced a bigger challenge in the fight for the overall win. Michelin’s WRC gravel tyre is designed to cover the broadest spectrum of conditions possible, from the hardest-wearing stages to smoother ground. Some of our rivals choose to favour a certain type of stage when developing their tyres, but Michelin Motorsport makes a point of providing a high-performance solution that covers the entire season. Taking the results of the whole year into account, it seems clear that our strategy is the best choice.” Michelin’s gravel tyres combine advanced technology with an extremely versatile performance window in order to cater for the conditions competitors face over the course of the championship as a whole. Thanks to the Michelin Total Performance philosophy, which consists in taking forward several performance-related criteria at the same time when it develops its tyres, Michelin’s engineers have succeeded in conceiving tyres that are both competitive and robust, two factors which are often considered to be conflicting. In Poland, this approach paid off as competitors reached top speeds of up to 200kph. The PZM Rally Poland was ultimately won by Andreas Mikkelsen and A. Jaeger Synnevaag in their Michelin-equipped Volkswagen Polo R WRC, ahead of Ott Tanak/Raigo Molder (Ford Fiesta RS WRC) and Hayden Paddon/John Kennard (Hyundai i20 WRC/Michelin). Before I underline the team’s hopes and expectations for this event, I wish to acknowledge all the hard work that’s gone into putting on this rally in such a short amount of time. The efforts of AKK Sports and all the volunteers, particularly in the context of COVID-19, has really impressed me so a big thank you to them. It’s fair to say we showed our limits on Rallye Monte-Carlo and found ourselves licking our wounds and trying to get ahead. Unfortunately, it didn’t work there and after making some changes to our approach we start the second round of the season hoping it will be much better than the first. Having wished a fond farewell to Carlos del Barrio after Monte as he prepared for the next chapter of his career, we are pleased to welcome back Craig and Paul for the start of their half-season campaign in a Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC. We know very well their ability and determination as they try to make a strong start to their season. Just three weeks after Rally Poland and securing the biggest result of his career, when he won two prize drives in the World Rally Championship-based Drive DMACK Fiesta Trophy, the 23-year-old is ready for the season’s toughest test on Finland’s world-famous gravel rollercoaster. Formerly known as the 1,000 Lakes Rally (Finland has 187,888 lakes – as well as a lot of trees) and the Jyväskylän Suurajot (the Jyvaskyla Grand Prix), Neste Rally Finland holds a special place in the hearts of rally fans around the world. This event in this place is regularly touted as rallying’s spiritual home. It really is that good. And that tricky. Winning on these roads requires speed, nerve, and a perfect set of pacenotes to describe what’s happening on the far side of that blind crest you’re approaching flat out in top gear. Osian and co-driver Dale Furniss were supposed to compete in Finland last season, but were left disappointed when a lack of budget forced them out of the Scandinavian trip. Under the watchful eye of Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg (Member of the Board of Management for the Volkswagen brand), Andreas Mikkelsen and Mikko Markkula (N/FIN) completed a very good team performance for Volkswagen with sixth place on their competitive debut in the Polo R WRC. “It was great to be present at such a magnificent success,” said Dr. Hackenberg, who is responsible for technical development. “I was very impressed by the manner in which the team earned this success, and how delighted they were by it. It is just fantastic to see how well the entire team is working together. This provides great backing for our drivers, who did an extraordinary job.” The fine team performance at the fourth round of this season’s FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) sees Volkswagen move to the top of the Manufacturers’ Championship. Sébastien Ogier also extended his lead in the Drivers’ Championship, courtesy of his third win of the season.
