O f r by much its contents , by its eferences to the Spagyric art , to the grand Magis te riu m r , the t ue and universal Medicine , the Tinctures which , transmute metals , with other unknown quantities and other deep mysteries which make part o f the

' Sacra men tu m Re zs r g . But if he we e asked what he thought of Basil Valentine

r r in his histo ical and pe sonal Character, it is unlikely that he would suppose fo r a moment the existence O f any romantic mystery encompassing the mere life o f the man . H e would regard him as a pious Benedictine monk , uncommonly well versed for his period in certain ' ' le T rzu m /zal /zamot o n ti m n x p C f A o y. departments Of experimental and medi c al r r Chemistry, and , pe haps , as a biza re S peculator in the cloudy borderlands Of physical science ; but suc h biographical data as c an be gathered concerning him r from his w itings , he would naturally r accept without question , because the e would be no ground fo r assuming any reason to doubt them . Yet even as such a person would be mistaken in his
