We Support Chris Hansen and the Seattle Center We Support Chris Hansen and the Seattle Center January 24, 2013 Dear Mayor McGinn and members of the City Council, We are writing as members of Seattle’s music community to voice our support for the efforts by Chris Hansen’s investor group to build a new arena in Sodo. Hansen’s proposed development, along with its positive impact on Seattle Center, represents a great opportunity for performers and fans alike, and aligns nicely with KEXP’s move to a new home at Seattle Center in 2014. Seattle has one of the most thriving music communities in the country, a community that is part of a broader, !ourishing cultural landscape. Our city is alive with music, literary, performing, and visual arts. We’re home to incredible cinema, culinary arts, design, architecture, and yes, renowned professional sports franchises. Together, these diverse cultural institutions strengthen the vitality of our region, fuel our economy, attract and retain residents, and boost tourism. Most importantly, they make Seattle one of the greatest cities in which to live and work. By opening the door for the possible return of professional basketball to Seattle, and by offering a home for other sports franchises, as well as concerts, events, and exhibitions, the Hansen development energizes the burgeoning Sodo neighborhood and strengthens Seattle’s cultural community. We believe one of the great bene"ts of the Hansen project is that it devotes resources to invigorating Key Arena at Seattle Center, which will be the temporary home of a new basketball team while the new venue is completed. Soon, Seattle Center will also be the new home of KEXP. As members of the KEXP Community, we wholeheartedly support efforts to bring additional energy to the Center campus. New vitality at Seattle Center bene"ts all the nonpro"t campus tenants. We thank you for your support of this new development. We lend our voices to the effort as well. Through a mutual friend, he had the instrumental that guitarist Stone Gossard had dubbed “Dollar just received a three-track instrumental demo from a band looking Short” was renamed “Alive.” for a lead singer and lyricist. • Political Pearl Jam Raises Pepsi Center Roof
Political Pearl Jam raises Pepsi Center roof The Gazette (Colorado Springs, CO) April 3, 2003 | ROBIN A. ROTHMAN; THE GAZETTE It was 11 p.m. when the house lights came up Tuesday at the Pepsi Center, but the guys in Pearl Jam weren't ready to vacate the stage. They weren't concerned that they were 15 minutes past curfew. After all, it was the start of their 2003 U.S. tour and they had barely begun the third song of their second encore. The crowd was equally determined to "Keep on Rockin' in the Free World" for at least a few more minutes. The song, both in performance and in sentiment - "Take to the streets! Raise your voice!" - was a powerful ending to a night of varied content and mixed response. Amply sprinkled with tunes from their latest release, "Riot Act," the set list adequately represented the group's catalog, but the selection was clearly geared toward those fans dedicated enough to own albums after the debut "Ten" and follow-up "Vs." "Love Boat Captain," a touching tribute to the nine fans trampled when the band played in Denmark in 2000, opened the show slow and steady at 8:45 p.m. with the borrowed idea that "All you need is love." "Corduroy" and "Better Man" were obvious crowd-pleasers, and unsurprisingly those rare, older, bigger hits like "Even Flow," "Porch" and "Daughter" prompted sing-alongs. "I see you're into the song," frontman Eddie Vedder improvised during "Black," tying it in as if it were a standard lyric.

  • Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl, and Kurt Cobain
f Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl, and Kurt Cobain (from top) N irvana By David Fricke The Seattle band led and defined the early-nineties alternative-rock uprising, unleashing a generation s pent-up energy and changing the sound and future of rock. THIS IS WHAT NIRVANA SINGER-GUITARIST KURT Cobain thought of institutional honors in rock & roll: When his band was photographed for the cover of Rolling Stone for the first time, in early 1992, he arrived wearing a white T-shirt on which he’d written, c o r p o r a t e m a g a z i n e s s t i l l s u c k in black marker. The slogan was his twist on one coined by the punk-rock label SST: “Corporate Rock Still Sucks.” The hastily arranged photo session, held by the side of a road during a manic tour of Australia, was later recalled by photogra pher Mark Seliger: “I said to Kurt, T think that’s a great shirt... but let’s shoot a couple with and without it.’ Kurt said, ‘No, I’m not going to take my shirt off.’” Rolling Stone ran his Fuck You un-retouched. ^ Cobain was also mocking his own success. At that moment, Nirvana - Cobain, bassist Krist Novoselic, and drummer Dave Grohl - was rock’s biggest new rock band, propelled out of a long-simmering postpunk scene in Seattle by its incendiary second album, N everm ind, and an improbable Top Ten single, “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Right after New Year’s Day 1992, Nevermind - Nirvana’s first major-label release and a perfect monster of feral-punk challenge and classic-rock magne tism, issued to underground ecstacy just months before - had shoved Michael Jackson’s D angerous out of the Number One spot in B illboard.

Korać 2 Abstract This paper explores grunge, a music genre that developed in Seattle, Washington during the 1990s. The aim is to show how grunge contributed to changes primarily in the American society as it moved from underground to mainstream and became a primary pop cultural movement in the 90s. It also became a subculture which has its special characteristics like a certain way of dressing, behaving etc. The paper follows the evolution of grunge from its beginning in the 1980s. Thanks to Sub Pop, an independent record label, and its creators Jonathan Poneman and Bruce Pavitt and their sense for business and self-promotion, grunge moved from underground to mainstream at the beginning of the 1990s with Nirvana’s album Nevermind as a landmark and their single “Smells like Teen Spirit” as the anthem of the Generation X. Furthermore, the paper explores how musicians engaged in different aspects of society like politics, campaigning and activism and how grunge became an essential part of fashion statements and different forms of art such as movies.

12 May 16, 2006 THE RETRIEVER WEEKLY Arts & Entertainment Pearl Jam returns to their roots The semester is just about over, seniors are graduating (congratulations!), and many students are making their plans for the summer. Some students will vacation at the beach, move back in with their families, or even use their time to travel overseas. Quite a few students will also be looking for jobs and internships to gain experience, a little extra money, or both. Other students may not have even started their job search for the summer, and upon reading this article, may suddenly have a sinking feeling in the pit of their stomach. There is some good news though; it’s not too late to get a summer internship position! The Shriver Center has lots of opportunities for students in all majors, and can help students find a summer position that is relevant to their major where they can earn credit and get paid at the same time. Many academic departments at UMBC offer courses that coincide with internship experience and are geared toward students earning credit for internships. The Shriver Center also provides students the opportunity to convert their current jobs into a credit-bearing internship. If a summer job relates to a student’s area of study, and if the job provides opportunities to use skills students learned in the classroom in a hands-on [amazon.com] Back to Basics: Pearl Jam’s new record will please fans. nature, then chances are it’s a position that can be converted to an internship for credit.
