The Era of Trump: How Jamaican DACA Recipients are Coping with the 2017 DACA Policy Change Abstract The topic of undocumented immigrants living in the United States stimulates consistent national and local debate. In 2012 President Barack Obama signed an executive order creating the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy which provided undocumented immigrants work authorization and reprieve from deportation. In 2017, newly elected President Donald J. Trump announced the removal of the DACA policy. Researchers have focused on the impact of the removal of the DACA policy on undocumented Latino/a immigrants, but limited to no research has focused on the impact for Black immigrants, specifically those identifying as Jamaican. The purpose of this study was ot inquire what coping strategies Jamaican DACA recipients are using as they transition with the 2017 DACA policy change. The study employed qualitative methodology, in particular, a narrative inquiry approach. The study found that since the DACA policy change announcement, participants are transitioning from feeling fortunate to experiencing fear of deportation. Participants also indicated without the benefit of the AD CA policy, they lack sense of control in their lives. The study also showed participants have a strong support network to help them cope with the DACA policy change, but participants use religion as their primary coping strategy. The participants suggested the best coping strategy for their peers is to find a trusted individual to share their story. The lived experiences of undocumented Jamaican immigrants was similar to the research studies focused that on Latino/a undocumented immigrants. Thank you. iii Biographical Sketch Rachele Hall is currently the Associate Director for Community Building and Co- Curricular Programs at Westchester Community College. Ms. Hall attended the State University of New York College at Oneonta where she obtained her Bachelor of Science in Philosophy in 2006. She attended the University at Albany where she graduated with a Master of Science in Education Administration and Policy Studies in 2009. She began doctoral studies in the St. John Fisher College Executive Leadership program in the summer of 2017. The blurring of ethnic lines through the process of assimilation has promoted equality of economic opportunity and produced a cultural life open to popular participation and relatively free of constraints imposed by group membership.1 African Americans are the obvious exception to this pattern, since their ancestors came as slaves, not as “immigrants”—as the word is customarily used—and they are not a subject in this essay. Those who arrived as newcomers on the American shore were thrown into a “melting pot,” almost every scholar once assumed. It was much too simple a notion. Many immigrants joined the mainstream while preserving much of their own ethnic culture. In fact, American liberty has allowed precisely that process of preservation. Freedom and tolerance have per- mitted religious and cultural minorities who were marginalized or perse- cuted in their homelands to maintain a distinctive way of life free from fear. Hamilton Brown built the town's local Anglican Church, which is where Prof. Harris says his grandfather is buried. It is also where he himself was baptized and confirmed. A research archive of Jamaican records indicate that at one point in 1817, Hamilton Brown owned scores of slaves. The majority were brought in from Africa, though he also owned many Creole slaves. The Harris campaign has not commented on her father's claims. It did not respond to a request for comment.

Although external cultural influence is not a new phenomenon (given the inglori- ous human history of conquest and colonization) and third culture children are on the rise, there is an unprecedented level of voluntary culture shar- ing in the 21st century due to modern forms of globalization. Technological advances beginning at the end of the 20th century have facilitated instanta- neous access to and interaction among people from once-distant lands. In the case of the Caribbean, there is a well-established bidirectional exchange with the United States, the country that sends the most tourists to the Caribbean and receives the most migrants from the Caribbean (Caribbean Tourism Organization, 2013a; Thomas-Hope, 2002). I will attempt to construct a leadership theory that assumes social conflict theory rather than systems theory and seeks to identify the characteristics of leadership as found in marginalized communities. Haiti is the first and only successful slave revolt in history, so why isn’t this feat celebrated all over the world? Why haven’t we learned the important lessons that these revolutionaries can teach? For example, did these slaves exercise leadership differently than their masters; and if so, is this why they were able to win their freedom and establish their own country? These questions form the basis of my research question: What can we learn through analyzing texts written on the Haitian Revolution as well as the texts of contemporary Haitian and Haitian-American subjects that will help us critique traditional, and suggest new, notions of leadership? The purpose of analyzing text written about the Haitian Revolution is to identify characteristics that capture the unofficial, non-traditional leader.

Flanagan Advisor: Cecelia Cutler Transracialization is not a biological term connoting the change of one’s skin tone to become a member of a different race. Its definition has its roots in racialization—the ideological process that describes how one assembles ideas about groups based on their race and decides, for example, what a ‘Black’ person is and how ‘Black’ people speak. Thus, transracialization is a linguistic term that describes the political and sociocultural act of recontextualizing one’s phenotype with the use of language, and in so doing, upending the observers’ stereotypical expectations of who one is (Alim 2016).
