    UMass MAGAZINE FALL 2007 VOLUME 10 Tsunami NUMBER 3 at the Tsongas River Hawks’ Hockey: Centerpiece of “a Whole New Culture” A Message from the Chancellor I want to reaffirm what I said when I was selected as Chancellor last spring: It is a great honor to have this opportunity to lead the University of Massachusetts Lowell. This campus impresses me more each day as I get to know our extraordinary faculty, administrators, staff and students. Many people have helped me this past year as I have transitioned to a new position, but I want to mention one person in particular, former Chancellor William T. Hogan. I want to thank him for his commitment to UMass Lowell and for the invaluable advice and counsel he continues to provide to me through this transition. I bring passion to this job and a special understanding of the character of the campus—now comes the joy of the work. There is much to do, and I will need every one of you to help achieve our lofty goals in teaching, research and service. We begin this fiscal year facing a serious budget challenge—a $3 million deficit that required us to trim spending and identify ways to operate more efficiently. The financial realities of public higher education demand that we extract maximum value from each dollar spent, and then act as entrepreneurs to grow our resources. The next few years will be a time of building. We will construct an emerging technologies center to unleash the potential of our research on nanomanufacturing and biomanufacturing.

In the profiles below, race winners are denoted by a check mark. Winners who are fair traders are highlighted in blue text. Alabama – no competitive races___________________________________________ Alaska_________________________________________________________________ Governor OPEN SEAT – incumbent Frank Murkowski (R) lost in primary and was anti-fair trade. As senator, Murkowski had a 100% anti-fair trade voting record. 9 GOP Sarah Palin’s trade position is unknown. • Democratic challenger Tony Knowles is a fair trader. In 2004, Knowles ran against Lisa Murkowski for Senate and attacked her for voting for NAFTA-style trade deals while in the Senate, and for accepting campaign contributions from companies that off-shore jobs.1 Arizona________________________________________________________________ Senate: Incumbent GOP Sen. Regardless of the type of event you are planning, you need to have a topic or an idea of what your goals are for the event. KINNEY Yellow ATLANTIC NEWS STAFF WRITER NORTH HAMPTON | The date is set. On Tuesday, Nov. 14, at North Hampton School, residents will come together to deliberate Black on the possible takeover of the assets of Aquarion Water Co., while Senior Vice President of Aquarion, Larry Bingaman, says the company is not for sale. As part of a special town meeting, the voting portion will follow on Dec. 19. The vote is only to determine if voters want to explore the feasibility of assuming the assets of Aquarion within North Hampton’s borders. If the article receives the necessary two-thirds approval, a warrant article with a dollar amount would then go before voters at the town’s annual town meeting in March. The meeting is a result of a petition by Henry Fuller, resident and Water Commission chair- man. The petition was signed by more than 450 North Hampton residents. Aquarion Water Co. currently provides water for more than 8,000 customers living in Hampton, North Hampton and Rye. Roughly 70 percent of the households in North Hampton are served by the water company. Bingaman said it’s not as simple as just taking control of the system in a single town. Smith, Ph.D. UNH Survey Center www.unh.edu/survey-center 603/862-2226 DURHAM, NH – New Hampshire Governor John Lynch’s job approval rating has climbed even higher to 73 percent. Lynch holds a commanding lead over his Republican opponent, Jim Coburn, in the race for New Hampshire Governor. These findings are based on the latest Granite State Poll ,∗ conducted by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center. The Granite State Poll is sponsored by the University of New Hampshire. Five hundred nine (509) randomly selected New Hampshire adults were interviewed by telephone between April 20 and April 27, 2006. The margin of sampling error for the survey is +/-4.4 percent. Gubernatorial Approval John Lynch’s approval rating as New Hampshire Governor continues to inch higher, putting him in excellent position for his reelection in November. In the most recent Granite State Poll, 73 percent of New Hampshire adults say they approve of the job Lynch has done as governor, only 6 percent disapprove, and 21 percent are neutral. By comparison, 54 percent of Granite Staters approved of the job Craig Benson was doing at a similar point in his administration.
