The male Surrealists surrounding André Breton mostly saw them only as partners or models, but this volume shows how much more these women artists had to offer. The feminine side of Surrealism – some 7 270 works by 36 international women artists The dominant topic of male Surrealists was woman as goddess, she-devil, doll, fetish, child-woman, android, and dream creature. The women artists of Surrealism, on the other hand, were searching for a new female identity FANTASTIC WOMEN and incidentally discovered their own language of forms. And then there SURREAL WORLDS FROM was the examination of political topics, literature and foreign myths. The quali ties of the traditional icon continue to have an effect, particularly in the spiritual presence and auratic power of many modern and contem- porary artworks. This volume presents master pieces which express aspects of spirituality and reverence in a variety of individual ways. 60 stars – from the Byzantine devotional image 11 to Andy Warhol The works extend from Russian icons via Caspar David Friedrich, Vasily Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich, Piet Mondrian, Mark Rothko and Yves Klein to Andy Warhol, Niki de Saint Phalle, Isa Genzken and Andreas Gursky. His photomontages and book covers based on collages which had their origins in Berlin’s Dada scene were directed against Fascism and made him internationally famous. Their explosive power has lost none of its impact. 12 The cosmos of John Heartfield – lavishly illustrated and highly explosive Heartfield was a sharp and uncompromising observer who subverted JOHN HEARTFIELD the documentary character of the press photograph. It was found that there is only very patchy provenance information for the forty-two artworks donated in 2000 to the Kirchner Museum Davos by “Rosemarie and Konrad Baumgart-Möller in memory of Ferdinand Möller, Berlin.” Since “Möller” is one of the red-flag names in provenance research, the investigation of this part of the collection was given priority.

The Social, Political and Economic Determinants of a Modern Portrait Artist: Bernard Fleetwood-Walker (1893-1965) by MARIE CONSIDINE A thesis submitted to the University of Birmingham for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of History of Art College of Arts and Law The University of Birmingham April 2012 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. ABSTRACT As the first major study of the portrait artist Bernard Fleetwood-Walker (1893- 1965), this thesis locates the artist in his social, political and economic context, arguing that his portraiture can be seen as an exemplar of modernity. The portraits are shown to be responses to modern life, revealed not in formally avant- garde depictions, but in the subject-matter. Industrial growth, the increasing population, expanding suburbs, and a renewed interest in the outdoor life and popular entertainment are reflected in Fleetwood-Walker’s artistic output. The role played by exhibition culture in the creation of the portraits is analysed: developing retail theory affected gallery design and exhibition layout and in turn impacted on the size, subject matter and style of Fleetwood-Walker’s portraits.

Tramonto Spaventoso April 22–June 5, 2021 456 North Camden Drive, Beverly Hills Albert Oehlen in his studio, Ispaster, Spain, 2020. Artwork © Albert Oehlen. Photo: Esther Freund March , Gagosian is pleased to present Tramonto Spaventoso, an exhibition by Albert Oehlen comprising the second part of his version of the Rothko Chapel in Houston as well as other new paintings. The first part of the project—consisting of four paintings that mirror the imposing scale of the Color Field compositions in the Chapel while opposing Rothko’s contemplativeness with their frenetic energy— was exhibited at the Serpentine Galleries, London, in –. Both parts make up the work Tramonto Spaventoso (–). Oehlen uses abstract, figurative, and collaged elements to disrupt the histories and conventions of modern painting. By adding improvised components, he unearths ever-new possibilities for the genre. While championing self-consciously amateurish “bad” painting, Oehlen continues to infuse expressive gesture with Surrealist attitude, openly disparaging the quest for reliable form and stable meaning. In the large-scale canvases on view at the Beverly Hills gallery, Oehlen employs acrylic, spray paint, charcoal, and patterned fabric to interpret and transform John Graham’s painting Tramonto Spaventoso (Terrifying Sunset, –), a work by the Russian-born American modernist painter that he discovered in the s and has been fascinated with ever since. Using Graham’s puzzle-like painting as a vehicle for repeated interpretation, Oehlen reconfigures elements in diverse and absurdist ways across multiple compositions. The exhibition, which goes by the same title, is therefore in part an homage to the earlier, lesser-known artist. Reworking motifs from Graham’s original, including a mermaid and a man sporting a monocle and a Daliesque handlebar moustache, Oehlen improvises on his source.

Undefined. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. This book, the first published anthology of British surrealist poetry, takes its title from Herbert Read s words when he opened the Surrealist Poems and Objects exhibition at the London Gallery at midnight on 24 November 1937. Within a few years the Second World War would eectively fragment the British surrealist movement, dispersing its key members and leaving the surrealist flame flickering only in isolated moments and places. Yet British surrealist writing was vibrant and, at its best, durable, and now takes its place in the wider European context of literary surrealism. On the Thirteenth Stroke of Midnight includes work by Emmy Bridgwater, Jacques B. Moderna Museet visar konst från år 1900 till idag.

28.8.2019_JS 16.9.2019_transl Brailovsky Curt Glaser Report: III. Summary of the Historical Facts Curt Glaser (1879–1943) was born in Leipzig, the son of a Jewish family. In 1903 he began his studies of art history in Berlin and received his doctorate there in 1907. Most likely in 1903 as well, he married Elsa Kolker (1878-1932). Starting around 1910, with the support and in part at the behest of Glaser's father-in-law, Hugo Kolker, the couple began to build a significant art collection that encompassed, among others, the works of Edvard Munch, Vincent van Gogh, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso and Hans Purrmann. In 1902, Glaser began to be active as an art critic and became one of the most important critics and commentators in Berlin. Starting in 1909, Glaser worked at the Königliches Kupferstichkabinett, where by 1912 at the latest he was significantly expanding the collection of modern and contemporary art and promoting it through numerous exhibitions. During the course of his tenure at the Kupferstichkabinett, Glaser authored his most important scholarly publications: Zwei Jahrhunderte deutscher Malerei [Two Hundred Years of German Painting] (1916), Die Graphik der Neuzeit [Contemporary Graphics] (1922), and monographs on Lucas Cranach the Elder (1921) and Hans Holbein the Younger (1924). In October 1924, Glaser became the director of the Kunstbibliothek in Berlin. Among his chief tasks, in particular, was to redefine the Kunstbibliothek as an art historical research library. In July 1925, the Glasers moved into a civil service apartment unattached to the director's post, in which their art collection was also exhibited.

Guggenheim Museum Outline * Around the turn of the 20th century there appeared in Europe and in the USA new spiritual and social movements such as Theosophy and later Anthroposophy that richly contributed to pioneers of modernism and abstract art. Champions of modernism in art such as Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, Kazimir Malevich, as well as Hilla Rebay and Frank Lloyd Wright were all influenced by these new modes of thoughts. These ideas were a potent mix of Eastern philosop- hies, Christian mysticism, and spiritism coupled with the latests developments in science, such as electromagnetism and the theory of relativity. The wish to make the invisible visible is seen in all of these artists’ work . In 1906 the Swedish artist and spiritualist Hilma af Klint began painting her first abstract series Primordial Chaos featuring blue, green and yellow geometrical shapes and spirals. Af Klint was herself a follower of Theosophy and Rudolph Steiner. Her main work, Paintings for the Temple, all in various degrees of abstraction, express what she calls the higher truth: unity beyond duality and the material world and mankind’s spiritual evolution.
