Assigned to the 61st Battalion with the Winnipeg Rifl es, Bill May was wounded by shrapnel to the leg during the Battle of Vimy Ridge. His older brother was left for dead on the battlefi eld after a shell exploded nearby and his cheek, chin and shoulder sustained horrifi c wounds.
