L Aurence King Spring 2018 Laurence King Spring 2018 Spring 2018 Laurence King Laurence Laurence King Spring 2018 Dear Bookseller, The fun of developing a new list for us is almost always in the new directions in which it takes us. From publishing our first ever monograph on a major contemporary artist to reimagining current successful lines, we hope that the risks we have taken with what is new will make our Spring 2018 books and gifts fun to sell. In Around the World in 80 Trees, Jonathan Drori shows how qualities of particular trees have made them completely integral to the life and culture of different countries and cities. By combining this engaging text with Lucille Clerc’s beautiful illustrations, we have made the book the perfect gift for all tree-lovers—which means almost all of us. TTT: Tattoo by Sang Bleu is without question the most comprehensive book ever published on contemporary tattoo culture, with more than 1,600 images on 528 pages. It shows examples of the work of studios from around the globe, as well as having essays on key topics, making each spread a startling feast of the beautiful and the bizarre. Joel Meyerowitz: Where I Find Myself is a monograph on the work of the world’s leading street photographer. The publication of the book will coincide with a series of exhibitions around the world to celebrate his 80th birthday. In Read This if You Want to Be a Great Writer, the successful novelist Ross Raisin takes the concept of the bestselling photography series Read This into another medium by deconstructing short extracts from the works of great writers to show their techniques. The ever-ingenious Children’s list will be launching Hoakes Island, in which young readers must solve puzzles to save an island and the animals who live there from dastardly developers. It comes with a special color filter to enable them to find secret clues. We will also be launching the series Little Guides to Great Lives with books on Nelson Mandela, Marie Curie, Leonardo da Vinci, and Amelia Earhart. The lively texts and attractive design and illustrations should make the series eminently collectable. The Mystery Mansion follows the highly innovative The Hollow Woods but takes the Victorian parlor game Myriorama to the world of Agatha Christie and Downton Abbey with a whole new style of illustration. And, of course, there is much else. Each book, gift, and game has been made with as much originality and care as we can bring to it. As ever, we very much welcome feedback on your experience of selling the list. If you would like to get in touch, you will find contact details at the back of this catalog. Above all, the striving for originality should always be informed by the people to whom we are most grateful for stocking and championing our list. From GilesSølveKatie (2018). • CVAN Open Letter to the Secretary of State for Education
Press Release: Wednesday 12 May 2021 Leading UK contemporary visual arts institutions and art schools unite against proposed government cuts to arts education ● Directors of BALTIC, Hayward Gallery, MiMA, Serpentine, Tate, The Slade, Central St. Martin’s and Goldsmiths among over 300 signatories of open letter to Education Secretary Gavin Williamson opposing 50% cuts in subsidy support to arts subjects in higher education ● The letter is part of the nationwide #ArtIsEssential campaign to demonstrate the essential value of the visual arts This morning, the UK’s Contemporary Visual Arts Network (CVAN) have brought together leaders from across the visual arts sector including arts institutions, art schools, galleries and universities across the country, to issue an open letter to Gavin Williamson, the Secretary of State for Education asking him to revoke his proposed 50% cuts in subsidy support to arts subjects across higher education. Following the closure of the consultation on this proposed move on Thursday 6th May, the Government has until mid-June to come to a decision on the future of funding for the arts in higher education – and the sector aims to remind them not only of the critical value of the arts to the UK’s economy, but the essential role they play in the long term cultural infrastructure, creative ambition and wellbeing of the nation. Working in partnership with the UK’s Visual Arts Alliance (VAA) and London Art School Alliance (LASA) to galvanise the sector in their united response, the CVAN’s open letter emphasises that art is essential to the growth of the country.

Establishing Tate Modern: Vision and Patronage The London School of Economics and Political Science Establishing Tate Modern: Vision and Patronage Caroline Donnellan A thesis submitted to the Department of Sociology at the London School of Economics for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, London, July 2013 1 Establishing Tate Modern: Vision and Patronage Declaration I certify that the thesis I have presented for examination for the Ph.D. degree of the London School of Economics and Political Science is solely my own work, other than where I have clearly indicated that it is the work of others, in which case the extent of any work carried out jointly by me and any other person is clearly identified in it. The copyright of this thesis rests with the author. Quotation from it is permitted, provided that full acknowledgement is made. This thesis may not be reproduced without the prior written consent of the author. I warrant that this authorisation does not, to the best of my belief, infringe the rights of any third party. 2 Establishing Tate Modern: Vision and Patronage Abstract Tate Modern has attracted significant academic interest aimed at analysing its cultural and urban regeneration impact. Yet there exists no research which provides an in-depth and contextual framework examining how Tate Modern was established, nor is there a study which assesses critically the development of Tate’s collection of international modern and contemporary art. Why is this important? It is relevant because a historic conflict of interests developed within the Tate’s founding organisation which was reluctant to host it.
