P CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME R I E S T F I E L D S

Today we welcome Westcombe Park players and supporters to Priestfields for our 22nd league game of the season. Only five games to go, and still everything to play for with , Camberley, Brighton and ourselves still in the mix. Only the top team gains automatic promotion and the second placed team goes into a play-off against the runner-up from the League.

Back in November Westcombe Park gave us a bit of a thumping at their place winning by 29 points to 13. Our performance was disappointing and we will need to be far better today to give ourselves a chance of winning against a traditionally very strong team.

Huge congratulations to Max Bullock and Cullen Daly for their selection for London Counties U18’s and more recently England Counties U18’s squads, read more about this later in the programme. Matt Beard, Thomas Miles, Zach Garratt and Zeki Yesilman have also represented U20’s and we have had an amazing eight Medway girls selected to the U15/18 Kent squads. Well done to everyone and it is brilliant to see these very talented youngsters putting Medway on the rugby map!

We are now well into the final quarter of the season and the diary is absolutely jammed packed with exciting rugby for all. Whatever the event, please do join in, volunteer and help your coaches and managers make this season the best one ever. I hope you have another great day at Medway RFC.

CLUB NEWS P S Taff Gwilliam R I E S T F I E L D

This week the tremendous club news is that two of our youngsters have been selected for England Under 18. These selections highlight the quality of the youth coming through the ranks at the club.

Over the last few years we have worked hard to bring rugby to more and more schools in the Medway area and grow long term partnerships with these schools. We are now we are seeing the results of this policy.

Last season Alfie Orris and Jordan Stubbington not only played for Kent but went on to play for London and South East England. This season there are 4 Medway boys representing Kent at under 20 level, Zach Garratt, Matthew Beard, Zeki Yesilman and Tom Miles.

The above success has been followed now by the brilliant news that Max Bullock and Cullen Daly have both been selected for the England Counties Under 18.

Both players having represented Kent were then selected for London & South East England and at the Divisional tournament (which they won) Max was selected in the playing squad and Cullen as a reserve in the National Under 18 side.

It is a fantastic achievement for them both and all our congratulations go to them and their families. The club is really proud of their success.

The boys will attend a Training camp at Portsmouth from 16th till to the 21st April. They will then travel to Ireland.

The International programme is from Monday 22nd April until Sunday 28th April. England Counties U18 will play against Ireland U18 Clubs on Wednesday 24th April (kick off 2:30pm) and Saturday 27th April (kick-off 2:00pm).

The first test will be played at Energia Park (Donnybrook Stadium) and the 2nd test will be played at Ashbourne RFC in County Meath. P PLAYER PROFILE MAX BULLOCK R I E S T F I E L D S

This week we profile one of our young players who has been selected to represent England Counties at Under 18 level. Max Bullock is a young player who has just turned 18. The son of club stalwarts Ade and Tracy Bullock he, like his brother James, has come through the age groups at Medway and after a very short time has broken into the Senior sides from the Development Squad. A current pupil at Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School (he is the 1st XV Captain) Max has enjoyed a wonderful season of rugby success. He has won representative honours at County, Divisional and now International levels. The school 1st XV have also had one of their best season’s for many years and only recently made the final of the Kent Schools 7s tournament for the very first time. His rugby ambition is simply to be the best player he can be. Max is a quiet unassuming young man who is popular with both his peers and coaches alike. He has a steady girlfriend, Tao, who is at University in . He has passed his driving test and uses his car to meet up with Tao and help run his friends around. Max loves eating, not surprising looking at the size of him, and is particularly fond of Nando’s. His favourite film is Moana, he watches it all the time. Really! Besides playing rugby he is a fine cricketer and is developing a reputation as a fast bowler for Borstal Cricket club. He loves music and names ‘Idles’ as his favourite band. His favourite places to visit are the United States, Medway RFC, Borstal Cricket Club and the local pub ‘Ye Arrow’ (but not on a Friday night!). Max’s life ambition is to seek a career in the construction Industry. jjrsolutions kent ltd M We deliver. You succeed. March 1939 – In their away game against , Rochester were losing 10-0 at half-time. However, the second half saw a complete change round. First of all, Graham kicked a nice penalty-goal to start the fight-back. Then a good three-quarter movement led to a try by Ron Buxton. Hitchcock finished off a move over to put Rochester only a point behind and near the end, Buxton, the Rochester skipper, with a brilliant try, settled the issue.

March 1949 – Although two players short, Rochester travelled to play Cassiopeians at Motspur Park. This was an interwar suburban locality situated on the south-eastern side of New Maldon and best known for its past and present sports grounds. At the University of London’s athletics ground, several world records were broken in the years before and after the Second World War. In 1999 the university sold the ground to Fulham football club, for use as a training centre.

On arrival, the home side sportingly lent them two players and Rochester went on to win an enjoyable game 12-6. Joe Hilderbrands kicked two penalties and, also scored a try. Bill Foster used his speed to win the race to the touch-down after a good kick ahead. Pat Lee was in good form at full-back.

March 1959 – Rochester were defeated by 11 points to 9 in a close game awat to Wye College. Mick Kenny converted an excellent penalty from fully thirty yards. Thiswas followed by a wonderful try from Mike Lemon, who broke on the blind-side, ran half the length of the pitch, chipped over the full-back’s head and then won the race for the try-line for a great individual score. Despite further all-out effort, Rochester could only manage another Mick Kenny penalty. Outstanding in a side with only four players over 21 were Gordon Usher and Bruce Moss in the forwards and Charlie Rowles was always safe on the wing.

Rochester 1st XV: Keith Stevens, Charlie Rowles, Peter Sims, Mick Kenny, Tony Shepherd, Mike Lemon, Wally Elvy, John Moysten, Gordon Usher, Malcolm Tomlin, Terry Jackson, Don Humphrey, Dave King, Bruce Moss, Pewter Chowne.

March 1969 – This re-arranged fixture gave Rochester the opportunity to beat local rivals, the Anchorians, by 8 points to 3, for their first derby win over them for several

In what was a close game Rochester scored first when Bob Richmond was able to pick up a loose ball and go over. Tony Evans converted. Rochester then lost Mick Burford through injury and the Anchorians got an unconverted try. With time running out, Joe Felce received the ball from a line-out and was able to drive over to settle the issue.

Rochester 1st. XV: Goff Quested; Charlie Rowles, Roger Tyler, Colin Brooks, Bob Richmond; Tony Evans (capt.), Jim Spackman; Steve Wilson, Graham Rowlands, Mick Burford; Ken Tanner, Peter Hudson; John Morley, Joe Felce.

March 1979 – With a display of hard, open rugby, Medway crushed Thanet Wanderers, the semi-finalists, by18 points to7. Brian Jacobs scored after backing up a good run by Dennis Kitchener, who himself, with some very determined running then scored two tries. Taff Gwilliam added the three conversions and Des Morant had his best game of the season at full-back

March 1989 - Medway, after five consecutive defeats, finally got back to winning ways with this narrow 21-17 home victory over Snowdon Colliery. Steve Meadows scored first following some good handling in the backs. In the second half Dave Davies, not having scored for six games, charged over from the base of the scrum. Mick Cadmore was in excellent kicking form, adding both conversions as well as two penalties and a dropped-goal.

(Right) Tom Kohler-Cadmore

Mick Cadmore, a useful cricketer in his day, was, no doubt very pleased with the recent award of a Yorkshire Cap, their 183rd, to his son, Tom Kohler- Cadmore.

March 1999 – After a good run in the league, Medway played host to Gillingham Anchorians and were well worth their 32-5 victory. As Medway were in control from the kick-off, they were able to score regular tries through Dave Davies, Ben Worthington, Simon Fisher, Adam Hamblin and Paul Essenhigh. Colin germany converted three. Medway had achieved their most important win of the season!

March 2009 – Following this convincing 58-0 home win over Ashford, Medway now needed only one more point to win their third successive championship. Peter Farrow (3), Darren Kistner (2), Danny Williams (2), Monish Shome and Billy Humthrey and Kevin Kimble were the try scorers for Medway.
