The Creation of a Calvinist Identity in the Reformation Period
chapter 7 The Creation of a Calvinist Identity in the Reformation Period Ole Peter Grell Calvinism, as opposed to other Protestant confessions quickly developed a pan-European identity during the Reformation period – from the mid- sixteenth to the early seventeenth century. This early modern Reformed iden- tity, including the theology which underpinned it, was shaped by the prolonged experience of persecution, exodus and subsequent exile which came to form the experience of an increasingly large number of influential Calvinist fami- lies. This chapter is concerned with how and why this came about and what it resulted in.1 First, an overview of the size and nature of Calvinist emigration and re- emigration together with a record of the principal places of settlement is pro- vided. Then follows a discussion of the rationale for emigration amongst the wealthy, Calvinist merchants who came to constitute the spine of the exiled Reformed communities and to what extent it was determined by religious and/ or economic factors. This leads into an analysis of the raison d’être which Calvinist exiles applied to their own experiences of persecution, exile, and minority existence, focussing in particular on the role of providential history and the use of the Old Testament as a matrix for their personal experiences. A variety of contemporary sources illustrating the role of providential history and the use of texts from the Bible are quoted here. The second half of the chapter is focussed on the significance of the so- called ‘Weber thesis’ for explaining the success of the first three generations of wealthy Calvinist merchants-bankers who provided leadership for the exiled Calvinist communities across Europe. -

New Testament Tools and Studies 35 (Leiden: Brill, 2006). viii, 384 pp. ISBN 978-90-04-15286-1. Jan Krans’ book is a reworking of his 2004 doctoral thesis, completed under the supervision of Professor Martin de Boer at the Faculty of Theology, Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam. A specialist in New Testament exegesis, Krans offers a careful study of how Erasmus and Theodore Beza worked to produce their critical editions of the sacred text. Of great importance for Krans’ study is an analysis of the textual conjectures in their exegesis of the New Testament. The appeal of this approach, of interest not only to biblical scholars but also to those studying humanism, is that it illuminates Erasmus’ and Beza’s methodologies. Above all, Krans is interested in the grounds on which these scholars chose their proposed readings. Indeed, looking beyond the received text and the conjectures, too often studied in and for themselves, Krans seeks to study the hermeneutical foundations of the texts and the conditions under which they were produced. The choice of Erasmus and Beza are natural ones, as both are foundational to modern editions of the New Testament. Consequently, Krans is not only interested in their treatment of the Greek text but in the entirety of their biblical work. As the author underlines in the introduction and epilogue, “judgement of conjectures should be preceded by knowledge of their authors” (333). The first section (7–191) is dedicated to the work of Erasmus. -

Place: Room 209, Lutheran Theological Seminary (LTS) Instructor: Gordon Jensen, LTS ph. 966-7866 [email protected] Course Description This course picks up the story of Christianity in the late medieval period (the end of the fifteenth century) and carries it through to the end of the sixteenth century. The first part of HA/HL 112 deals with the Reformation movements of the 16th century. The second part, taught by Dr. Sandra Beardsall, will deal with the story of Christianity from the time of the Reformations to the present. The Reformation Era The sixteenth century represents a major watershed in the story of Christianity in the West. We speak of “the Reformations” of the sixteenth century, but what that term means is understood in a variety of ways. Some have seen the Reformations as the triumph of light after centuries of darkness; for others it is the tearing apart of Christ’s body, the church, into many fragments. The first part of the course will seek to address the questions that swirl around the sixteenth century. It will look at backgrounds and try to put the Reformation movements into the context of their time and place. These movements will be seen ultimately in religious terms, but religion itself will be understood as very much a part of the social, economic and political realities of the day. By examining the major developments, personalities and writings of various kinds, we will attempt to shed some light on this period and to lay down some of the basic foundational stones for Christianity in the modern world. -

A New Order of Medicine: the Rise of Physicians in Reformation Germany
Introduction INVENTING MEDICAL REFORM The physicians of Nuremberg gather, their heads bent in earnest consultation. Scholars and gentlemen, the doctors are bearded, gowned, and capped. Some wear robes, the loose and unstructured garments of scholars, while others sport the typical dress of nobles, including slashed doublets, fur trim, and intricately patterned cloth. Before them, seated apothecaries, in fashionable but unscholarly dress, tools in hand, look up to the clique of doctors. A single wise woman gathers plants for the distillatory equipment that will produce lifesaving remedies. On the far right, a patient lies in bed while another phy- sician inspects his urine. This image is taken from the frontispiece to Joachim Camerarius’s 1586 Kreutterbuch, a German translation based on Pietro Andrea Mattioli’s Six Books on Dioscorides.1 It depicts physicians at the top of a medical hierarchy. Other practitioners, medical materials, and even the garden itself—symbol- izing the local, medical space—all depend on the physicians.2 In this imag- ined world, the apothecaries are literally overseen by the physicians. Their low stools, hunched posture, and mechanical tools reinforce their lesser position. They are manual workmen, like the gardener and the woman gathering herbs. Although permitted to work in the garden, none of these practitioners share any part in the medical decision-making that so engages the physicians. The division is clear: the physician inspecting urine in the corner of the picture is the sole, learned practitioner allowed to undertake this diagnostic practice. Camerarius’s image presents the physician’s place as natural, but in 1586 the order of medicine was not so obvious.
