“Dream and Passion” Jang Dong-wook

This is my first year as a high school student. Within a short period, many parts of my life have changed since entering Haneul Academy. To name a few examples, I’ve made a lot of nice new friends, met excellent teachers and started to live in a dormitory, being separated from my family.

At first it was quite hard to stand all the hardships alone in a place like Haneul Academy, but slowly I’m getting used to this new environment. I think my friends have almost adjusted them- selves to the new life, too. However, it is true that life in this school isn’t easy at all. We gave up every pleasure and comfort in life when we came here. We chose this way ourselves. Why? The reason is simple. We gathered in this place just for one thing. To realize our dreams.

These days many of my friends look so hopeless and their enthusiasm seems to be gone. Perhaps I can explain the cause of this depression. I think it is because they do not have dreams of their own.

“What is your dream?” “What do you want to do in the future?” “What kind of person do you want to be when you grow up?”

Of course all of you must have answered all these questions to interviewers before you entered Haneul, but I want you to think carefully, was it your ‘real dream’? Was it really the thing which you really wanted to put all your passion into?

Without a dream, you are nothing but a dead soul. It’s like sailing without a compass.

We are still young and energetic. We are able to make anything possible if we start right now. There are so many valuable opportunities still awaiting us. However you will soon miss most of them unless you struggle to catch them because they are only given to endeavoring young people who have their own dreams, just as the saying goes that ‘heaven helps those who help themselves’.

So what I want to tell you is this; find your dream, set your goal, and challenge your limits. Your efforts will not betray you. I guarantee your dreams will come true.

Haneul means ‘sky’. Someday you will surely fly high up in the sky and you will be able to reach its highest spot if you don’t ever lose your ‘Dream and Passion’. Never fear! Also, I will never give up, either.

The College Admission Presentation Choi Min-suk

“We’ve arranged this presentation at the start of a semester to provide students and parents the latest pre- cise news about college admissions, to help them in the process of college entrance.”

-Mr Kang Seok Yun, Principal, Haneul Academy

On March 24th, Haneul Academy invited students and parents to the school gym for a college admission presentation and Principal Kang explained about the misconceptions of school academic reports. The invitation for the event was posted on the school’s homepage, and about 500-700 were expected to attend. However, almost 1,500 visited that day, displaying the intense interest the school has been drawing recently. Individual consultations for entering Haneul Academy was offered on the same day after the presentation.

Violence-Free Haneul Bae Ji-young

School violence has been an issue of concern nowadays, especially, the suicide of a bullied middle school student in Daegu. Preventing bullying and violence is now a na- tional priority. Nationally, the number of middle and high school stu- dents who claim to be bullied stands at 12.7%. On the other hand, in a survey of Haneul’s student body, the num- ber was 0. One of the reasons for this figure can be attributed to a smaller class size and stronger teacher supervision. Also, the students living in a dormitory setting creates a kind of closeness like family, and students bond more easily. The community setting pro- motes more consideration for others. It is a serious problem we cannot ignore, and hopefully the model of Haneul Academy can be a learning point for schools that want to minimize their problem.

Kim Hyun-young

Haneul Academy is located in the central portion of Young Jeong Island, in Incheon near New Airport City. Until the year 2000, Young Jeong was actually two islands, the other being Yong Yu island. A massive land 8-year reclama- tion project was undertaken in 1992 to accommodate Incheon International Airport and the two islands were linked together to form our current island. Young Jeong Island is linked to the mainland by the Young Jeong and Incheon Bridges, as well as the Arex commuter train. Two ferry terminals are also on the island serving passengers bound for the outer islands or Wolmido.

The Incheon Grand Bridge Kim Hyun-young

The Incheon Grand Bridge was completed in October, 2009 at a cost of USD 1.4 billion. It is the second bridge connecting Young Jeong with the mainland, the other being the Young Jeong Bridge. The Incheon Grand Bridge connects the island to the Songdo area of Incheon, and can reduce travel time to the airport by up to one hour. At 21.3 kilometers in length, it is the world’s 7th longest cable-stayed bridge.

Young Jeong Bike Path Han In-koo

Nowadays, we see many people who enjoy bike riding. Some researchers claim that in the future the bike will replace cars. Because of global warming and fossil fuel depletion many people feel this may be the only alternative for the future. Thereby, many people will ride bikes. So, nowadays there are many bike paths just like the Young Jeong bike path. Young Jeong Island’s bike path starts at the Unseo subway station and goes around the island, ending at Incheon International Airport Freight Terminal. The path’s condition is excellent, and it is called the best bike road in Incheon by many people. Also, when you ride, you can stop for baked clams and kalguksu at Eul Wang Li beach. By riding a bike, you can improve your health and you can eat great food. You can kill two birds with one stone by riding a bike!

Fishing Seol Seong-sim

For people who want to fish but can’t find a suitable fishing area and want to catch many fish. I have a recommendation for them. Young Jeong island is a great fishing area. There are many varieties of fish around the island. Some com- mon fish are goby, soft shell clam and gray mullet. Others are carp, spotty belly greenling, mudskipper, and flatfish. You can find them all around island. There are two well known fishing locations in Young Jeong Island. One is the Man Jung fishing hole, the other is the Jung Sung fishing hole. Man Jung offers both freshwater fishing and sea fishing where many fish can be caught. Jung Sung fishing hole offers sea fishing. Keep in mind these have an entrance fee. If you don’t want to pay money, you can fish any place along the south seawall, north seawall, Sammock dock, Muui Island dock, or Fairy Rock. I recommend Muui Island dock or Fairy Rock to beginner, as they are more accessible. You can also fish in the winter on Young Jeong Island. Young Jeong Island is accessible by the Young Jeong or Incheon Bridges, or by the Airport Train. (AREX)

Wang San Beach Kwon Do-yoon

Wang San beach, which is located on Young Jeong Island, is the closest beach from Seoul. It is also conveniently located near major roadways for easy ac- cess. It has lots of space and a lengthy coastline to accommodate many weekend beachgoers. It is located next to the Eul Wang Li beach, but is more attractive to visitors because Wang San offers many more parking spaces. There are many events to attend here, which visitors can enjoy on the beach. There are outdoor performances, rafting, a ‘mud experience’, and a youth camp among other things. The Korean comedy program ‘One Night, Two Days‘ has recently shot an epi- sode here. and the Asian Triathlon Championship Series was held at the beach in 2009. There are many restaurants close to the beach. so visitors can enjoy fresh seafood there. During low tide, the sea recedes completely so everyone can enjoy a mud massage or digging for clams. The beach provides a beautiful sunset. The sand of the Wang San beach is comparatively rough, so it’s better to take sandals when you come, and when you come you must check the tide time, since low tide makes it impossible for you to swim. If you want to experience a quiet, beautiful beach, I strongly recommend Wang San to you.
