Accepted for publication 27 November 1997. Summary - Xiphinema souchaudi n. sp. is described from Eucalyptus plantations in Congo (Brazzaville) and from secondary cultures on Vigna radima. The new species is close ro X. imùalOr and ra X. yapoense Luc, 1958. A third population of X. yapoense is described. Like the tWO previously recorded populations of this species, it came from a virgin forest in Ivory Coast. The present sample included ail four juvenile stages. A small population of X. algeriense Luc & Kostadinov, 1982, from Senegal, was also studied; it included only one female but also the complete series of juveniles stages, which made it possible ra complete the original description. A new Rotylenchulinae : Serzegalonema sorglzi n. gen., n. sp. (Nematoda : Tylenchida) Gaetano GERMANI*, Michel Luc ** and James G. BALDWIN*** * Laboratoire de Ne’matologie, ORSTOM, B.P. 1386, Dakar, Sénégal; ** Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, Laboratoire des Vers, 61, rue de Buffon, Paris and *** Department of Nematology, University of California, Riverside, Ca 92521, USA. SUMMARY Description is given of Senegalonema sorghi n. gen., n. sp., parasitic on sorghum, at Patar, Senegal. This new genus, close to Rotylenchulus Linford & Oliveira, 1940, differs from it by several characters : more anterior position of the dorsal oesophageal gland orifice ; genital branches outstreched in immature female ; stylet and oesophagus only slightly regressed in males which exhibit terminal caudal alae ; moreover the structure of the lip region, as seen by SEM, appears very specific. Senegalonema n. gen. is considered as constituting, with Rotylenchulus, the subfamily Rotylenchulinae, within the Hoplolaimidae. Relationships between those genera of this family where females are inflated, with the family Heteroderidae (incl. Meloidogyninae) are discussed.

  • Cyst Nematodes in Equatorial and Hot Tropical Regions
From: CYST NEMAT'QDES by E. Edited F. Lamberti and C, Tayfor (Plenum Publishing Corporation, 1986) CYST NEMATODES IN EQUATORIAL AND HOT TROPICAL REGIONS Michel Luc MusiehmI national d'Histoire naturelle Laboratoire des Vers, 61 rue de Buffon, 75005 Paris France INTRODUCTION In the present communication, the term "cyst nematodes in equatorial and tropical regionsft is used instead of the usual "tropical cyst nematodes" for two reasons : - in addition to those species of cyst nematodes that are closely associated with hot tropical crops and areas, there are others that are common in temperate areas which may also be occasionally found in the tropics; - the topographical meaning of "intertropical" encompasses some mountainous areas, namely in Central and South America, where climate, vegetation and crops are quite similar to those of temperate regions: these are the "cold tropics". This paper deals only, with the "hot tropics", and the term "tropics" and f%ropicalflrefer here only to these climatic regions. Regarding the earliest records of %"teroderart in equatorial and tropical areas, it must be kept in mind that prior to Chitwood's (1949) resurrection of the ancient generic name MeZoidogyne Goeldi, 1877, the genus Hetmodera contained both cyst forming species of Heteroderidae (or Heterodera sensu lato) and various root knot species under the name Heterodera marioni (Cornu). As most of the early records of "HeterOdt?ra" in the tropics were given without morphological detail or description of symptoms on the host plant, it is not possible to determine whether the species in question were MeZoidogyne or cyst-forming species. Also, there are numerous records of IlHeterodera-like juveniles" in the literature concerning tropical crops but such juveniles may belong to species of non-cyst forming Heteroderinae genera which also occur in the tropics.

  • Obituary Notice
Nematology, 2010, Vol. 12(4), 485-493 Obituary notice Michel Luc (1927-2010) Michel Luc died on January 18, 2010 from the sudden progression of an old cancer. His wife, Mariette, had died just a few days before and they were buried together in Neuilly-sur-Seine, near Paris. Michel was one of the last of the founding fathers of modern nematology who, after the war, made this field what it has become today. Michel Luc was born on February 7, 1927 in Tunis (Tunisia). From 1945, he studied biology in Paris at the Sorbonne, where he attended classes delivered by world-renowned biologists such as Georges Mangenot in botany and Pierre-Paul Grassé in zoology. After earning a Licence de sciences naturelles in 1948, he was hired as a trainee (‘élève’) at ORSTOM (Office de la Recherche Scientifique et Technique Outre-Mer, now called IRD – Institut de Recherche pour le Développement) in 1950. He began his career as a phytopathologist, specialising in parasitic fungi of tropical plants. He was soon posted to the IDERT (Institut d’Enseignement et de Recherches Tropicales) Centre of Adiopodoumé, near Abidjan (Ivory Coast), in the phytopathology laboratory directed by Prof. Jean Chevaugeon. He worked there for several years, publishing a dozen articles on tropical parasitic fungi between 1951 and 1954. Interestingly, his very first publication, a 1950 report on ill-defined diseases of the Fig. 1. Michel Luc (1927-2010). cacao tree, was a 12 page list of all kinds of pests that did not include a single nematode! Xiphinema in which he described 40 new species.

(NEMATODA: DORYLAIMOIDEA). BY JOHN F. SOUTHEY and MICHEL- LUC Plant Pathology Laboratory, Harpenden, Herts, England and Laboratoire de Nematologie, O.R.S.T.O.M, Dakar, Senc5gal. The species Xiplinenia ensiculiferunz(Cobb, 1893) Thorne, 1937 is redefined on the basis of a topo- type population. Consequently two populations, considered by Loos (1949) and Luc (1961) as X. ensiculifrum, are described as new species (respectively, X. loosì n. sp. and X. hygrophiliini n. sp.) X. etisiculferoides Cohn & Sher, 1972 is synonymized with X. eiisiculifrrutn. Other populations referred by various. authors to X. ensiculiferuiii are reviewed and relocated. X. inacrostylurn Esser, 1966 is considered to be a valid species, distinct from X. ensiculifruni. In their recent study of the genus Xiplzinema, Cohn & Sher (1972) discussed X. ensiculiferunz (Cobb, 1893) Thorne, 1937 and noted that, “considerable confusion exists concerning the true identity of this species.” Cohn & Sher (1972), Loof & Maas (1972) and the present authors have all concluded, independently, that two or three different species have been identified by various authors as X. ensiculiferunz. , The difficulties in defining this species have arisen from several facts. Firstly, type specimens could not be found (Loof & Maas, 1972). Secondly, it was not possible to be certain from Cobb’s original (1893) description and figures whether the anterior genital branch was absent (though that is inferred from Cobb’s formula) or much reduced. Finally, one of us (Luc, 1961) had described a neotype, since invalidated, based on a population from the Ivory Coast which comparison with topotype material of X.
