Immaculate Conception Parish Divine Renovation: Part Two – New Vision and Leadership Father James Mallon writes extensively in his book entitled Divine Renovation regarding the importance of forming strong lay and ordained leadership within our parishes. He reminds us that, in order to be a successful leader, one must have a clear sense of direction and purpose in mind. This is why a pastor needs to have a vision for his parish - a vivid mental image of the desired fu- ture for his congregation that truly excites him and captivates the hearts and minds of his parish- ioners. Vision is essentially about where the parish is heading - it connects people to a meaningful purpose, uniting and challenging them to become a part of something bigger than themselves. And so, what is my vision for Immaculate Conception Parish? I envision IC as a welcoming community of disciples where everyone is known, loved and cared for – a family of families. I dream about the vibrant and powerful experience of the Eucharist enhanced by strong hospitality, uplifting music, and inspiring homilies. I imagine a community that makes disciples by introducing people to Christ, bringing them to spiritual maturity, equipping them for ministry, and sending them out to serve. Finally, I picture a community that has an invitational and missional culture (an outwardly focused church) where our parishioners are inclined to go forth beyond our doors, eager to share Christ’s love by extending invitations to others to follow the Lord and by serving those in need – a community of missionary disciples. Once a pastor has crafted his vision, Fr. Mallon reminds us that a leader cannot successfully accomplish his dream alone. He needs a trusted group of advisors, a leadership team, to support him and assist him in achieving his goals as the journey from dream to reality takes time, perseverance, and tremendous energy. It also requires prudence, creativi- ty, and openness to change. A pastor, ably assisted by his leadership team, will have to confidently lead his people through the cultural transformation occurring in his parish. This is not an easy task because while we all might want change, we often don’t actually want to change. The truth is that any change or renewal begins with us, within our own hearts and minds. As communication is the key to effective leadership, Fr. Mallon advises that the pastor work together with his lead- ership team and pastoral council to develop a clear communication process for the parish as any proposed changes will need to be clearly articulated and explained within the context of the bigger vision. Furthermore, the leadership team will need to develop a long term pastoral plan – a strategy. If the vision is our final destination, then the strategy is the path that will get us there. While it is clear that there is a considerable amount of work ahead of us, I am confident that with God’s help and the faithful support of our parish community we will ultimately succeed. I humbly ask you to pray for each other during this time of renewal, to be open to proposed changes, and to consider joining an army of volunteers needed to transform our dream into reality. May the Holy Spirit inspire and empower us all to become missionary disciples. Fr. Robert Divine Renovation Corner… .We are warmly inviting all of our parishioners to actively & faithfully participate in the life of our parish family by assisting us with the transformation of our parish culture. We continue to encourage you to kindly take the time to read Fr. Mallon’s book: Divine Ren- ovation: Bringing your parish from Maintenance to Mission and to act out of a commitment to our parish - to begin to grow with us in faith and in service to God and to kindly do your part to help us bring the hope of the future into the present. Copies of Divine Renovation are conveniently available in our Parish Office. The book can also be purchased online at www.twentythirdpublications.com. For those that have already read the book (or for those who have completed at least the first five chapters), our fourth Divine Renovation Workshop will be held on Saturday, November 17th from 9:00 A.M.- 12:00 Noon in our Rectory Assembly. If you plan on attending, please contact our Parish Office (773.775.3833) to R.S.V.P. Immaculate Conception Parish Our Music page has moved! The Music for our Masses is now listed on the back of our Mass Intentions page. We hope you like our new format! Welcome to the Newest Member ALL SAINTS’ DAY of Our Parish Family A Holy Day of Obligation Mass will be celebrated at the following times: Wednesday, October 31st 5:30 P.M. [Mass of Anticipation] Thursday, November 1st 9:00 A.M. & 7:00 P.M. ALL SOULS’ DAY Mass will be celebrated at the following times: Friday, November 2nd Margaret Patricia Taylor 8:30 A.M. & 5:30 P.M. Child of William & Eileen (Sweezy) Taylor Mass of Remembrance As we approach the month of November we remember those who have died and take time to tell the remarkable stories of their lives as a part of our parish family. We thank God for the gift of their lives and the legacy they have left behind with their families and friends. This year, our parish will sponsor a Remembrance Day with a special Mass of Remem- brance which will be held in our Church next Saturday, November 3rd at 11:30 A.M. Our Mass of Remembrance will provide us with an opportunity to join together in prayer with members of our parish who have lost a loved one in the past year to remind them that we continue to care for them and walk with them in their time of sorrow. The Mass will be celebrated for all of our deceased parishioners (all are invited to pray at this Mass for all family members, relatives and friends who have gone before us) but in a special way we will remember (by name) all those who have been buried from our parish during this past year. If you are planning on attending, we encourage you to bring a photograph, keepsake, or memento of your deceased loved one to our Mass of Remembrance. These treas- ured keepsakes will be placed on tables on our sanctuary steps prior to the Mass. Following the conclusion of Mass, light refreshments will be served in the vestibule of our Church from 12:30-1:30 P.M. If you would like to remember a loved one who has passed in the last year, even if the funeral was not held at our parish, we still warmly invite you to remember your family member at this special liturgy. If you would like a recently departed loved one listed and prayed for by name during our Mass of Remembrance, please contact our Parish Office at 773.775.3833 or via email at [email protected] by Monday, October 29th. Please provide their first name, last name and their date of death. They will be in our prayers. All are welcome to join us on this special day as we gather together as a parish community to honor and give thanks for the lives of all our departed loved ones. Immaculate Conception Parish Divine Renovation Workshop On Saturday, October 20th, we hosted our third workshop centered on Fr. Mallon’s book as we faithfully continue our Divine Renovation process at our parish. Our sincere thanks to Anne Chrzan for kindly sharing her wisdom with us as the presenter of our workshop! As always, we would also like to take a moment to express our heartfelt appreciation to all our parishioners who have joined us on our journey by reading the book and participating in one of our workshops including: Theresa Borowski, Pat Furgat, Dick Jenkins, Kyle Liebich, Rob Lohman, Ed Niewinski, Amy Reichle, and Gloria Tomaino.

CHURCH OF ST. ADALBERT 1903-1978 Grane Street Hill, 550 Lansing Street, Schenectady, NY 12303 (Jubilee Book) Crested on a hill stands the Church of St. Adalbert, its magnificent steeple spiralling heavenward, a reminder of the Shrine of Our Lady of Częstochowa (Jasna Góra), the spiritual and cultural focal point of Poland. Thus located, it offers a panoramic view of the City of Schenectady. As the Documents of Vatican Council II underscored, the Church is primarily people-God's people. More than two centuries before the establishment of the Church, Polish immigrants were known to be living in America, among them Albert Zaborowski. One of his descendants, John Lansing Zabriskie, was living in Schenectady in 1792. John, who in 1795 subscribed funds toward petitioning the New York State Regents to establish Union College, was a member of its first graduating class. Records further indicate that Ludwig Gapczynski, after serving in the Civil War, took up residence with his wife on Veeder Avenue in 1865. Not only was he the first Pole to become a citizen in Sche- nectady (in 1868), but his son, William, was the first person of Polish descent born in the City. A tailor by trade until his hands were severely burned, Ludwig then opened the first Polish grocery on Ferry Street. This was a blessing for the Polish women who, lacking adequate English, were forced to bring samples of coffee, pepper, sugar, and other foodstuffs wherever they shopped. The store also served as a place where friends met to exchange news. The Gapczynski family, through their subsequent travel agency and banking interest, encouraged and assisted other Polish families to settle here.

  • Circular Letter to the Brothers
CIRCULAR LETTER TO THE BROTHERS FOR THE CONCLUSION OF THE JUBILEE YEAR COMMEMORATING THE ONE HUNDRED SEVENTY-FIFTH YEAR OF THE FOUNDING OF THE CONGREGATION OF THE RESURRECTION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST God willing, I begin the journey toward the immense task of our new activity. There are so many expectations for our new work, so much that my heart is pounding and can sense the fear of not omitting anything. In the power of our Lord’s resurrection there is hope. Let us pray, let us pray together. The time has arrived! The Lord Jesus asks us to weigh anchor and to set out into the deep water. (Fr. Jerome Kajsiewicz, Letters, Vol. 8, p. 183) Dear Brothers! The waters have long passed beneath the bridges of the Tiber since the 32nd General Chapter, held in Rome on June 1 – 22, 2011, elected the new government of the Congregation. It is true that as superior general I have made myself present to you on various occasions, but this time I would like to share a broader reflection on the occasion of the jubilee year which is coming to an end. We have celebrated it in various ways, but in a rather discreet manner. Some gatherings have been organized, as well as celebrations in the parishes or religious houses on the Provincial or local community levels. For this occasion some publications have come out in the different languages. While writing these words I have in front of me the Circular Letter written on the occasion of the previous jubilee year (150 years) by the General Curia of that time, which reminds us: ―The Congregation of the Resurrection is not a work of our own or our own possession, but is rather the work of the Lord and his possession […].

ARTYKUŁY RESOVIA SACRA R. 27 (2020) JOANNA PYSZNA REFLECTIONS OF MOTHER TERESA KALKSTEIN ON THE RELIGIOUS VOCATION IN THE CIRCULAR LETTERS TO THE SISTERS OF THE RESURRECTION The year 2020 marks the fortieth anniversary of death of Teresa Kalkstein, the fourth Mother Superior of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Resurrection1. It is an excellent opportunity to recall not only her person but also her teaching. She was indeed an extremely important and remarkable person who led the Con- gregation during a difficult time: the II World War and the renewal of the reli- gious life started by the II Vatican Council. Her long and dedicated service to the JOANNA PYSZNA, doctoral student of theology of spirituality at Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski Uni- versity in Warsaw. The Congregation of the Sisters of Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ was founded on the 6th of January 1891 by two Polish women, a mother and daughter, Celina (Celine) Borzęcka and Jadwiga (Hedwig) Borzęcka. In 1905 the Congregation received its decree of approbation and in 1923 the Constitutions were confirmed. In 1891 the first convent was established in Kęty (Poland) and in 1900 the Resurrection Sisters went to the United States. In 1928 the Congregation was divided into the following provinces: the Polish Province, the Western and Eastern Province in the USA. In 1937 the Polish one was transformed into two provinces: the Poznan and Warsaw one. From the very beginning of the existence of the Congregation the sisters have undertaken tireless efforts towards a religious and moral rebirth of the world in the spirit of the Beatitudes.
