Divine Renovation: Part Two – New Vision and Leadership

Father James Mallon writes extensively in his book entitled Divine Renovation regarding the importance of forming strong lay and ordained leadership within our parishes. He reminds us that, in order to be a successful leader, one must have a clear sense of direction and purpose in mind. This is why a pastor needs to have a vision for his parish - a vivid mental image of the desired fu- ture for his congregation that truly excites him and captivates the hearts and minds of his parish- ioners. Vision is essentially about where the parish is heading - it connects people to a meaningful purpose, uniting and challenging them to become a part of something bigger than themselves. And so, what is my vision for Immaculate Conception Parish?

I envision IC as a welcoming community of disciples where everyone is known, loved and cared for – a family of families. I dream about the vibrant and powerful experience of the Eucharist enhanced by strong hospitality, uplifting music, and inspiring homilies. I imagine a community that makes disciples by introducing people to Christ, bringing them to spiritual maturity, equipping them for ministry, and sending them out to serve. Finally, I picture a community that has an invitational and missional culture (an outwardly focused church) where our parishioners are inclined to go forth beyond our doors, eager to share Christ’s love by extending invitations to others to follow the Lord and by serving those in need – a community of missionary disciples.

Once a pastor has crafted his vision, Fr. Mallon reminds us that a leader cannot successfully accomplish his dream alone. He needs a trusted group of advisors, a leadership team, to support him and assist him in achieving his goals as the journey from dream to reality takes time, perseverance, and tremendous energy. It also requires prudence, creativi- ty, and openness to change. A pastor, ably assisted by his leadership team, will have to confidently lead his people through the cultural transformation occurring in his parish. This is not an easy task because while we all might want change, we often don’t actually want to change. The truth is that any change or renewal begins with us, within our own hearts and minds.

As communication is the key to effective leadership, Fr. Mallon advises that the pastor work together with his lead- ership team and pastoral council to develop a clear communication process for the parish as any proposed changes will need to be clearly articulated and explained within the context of the bigger vision. Furthermore, the leadership team will need to develop a long term pastoral plan – a strategy. If the vision is our final destination, then the strategy is the path that will get us there.

While it is clear that there is a considerable amount of work ahead of us, I am confident that with God’s help and the faithful support of our parish community we will ultimately succeed. I humbly ask you to pray for each other during this time of renewal, to be open to proposed changes, and to consider joining an army of volunteers needed to transform our dream into reality. May the Holy Spirit inspire and empower us all to become missionary disciples.

Mass of Remembrance

As we approach the month of November we remember those who have died and take time to tell the remarkable stories of their lives as a part of our parish family. We thank God for the gift of their lives and the legacy they have left behind with their families and friends. This year, our parish will sponsor a Remembrance Day with a special Mass of Remem- brance which will be held in our Church next Saturday, November 3rd at 11:30 A.M. Our Mass of Remembrance will provide us with an opportunity to join together in prayer with members of our parish who have lost a loved one in the past year to remind them that we continue to care for them and walk with them in their time of sorrow. The Mass will be celebrated for all of our deceased parishioners (all are invited to pray at this Mass for all family members, relatives and friends who have gone before us) but in a special way we will remember (by name) all those who have been buried from our parish during this past year. If you are planning on attending, we encourage you to bring a photograph, keepsake, or memento of your deceased loved one to our Mass of Remembrance. These treas- ured keepsakes will be placed on tables on our sanctuary steps prior to the Mass. Following the conclusion of Mass, light refreshments will be served in the vestibule of our Church from 12:30-1:30 P.M. If you would like to remember a loved one who has passed in the last year, even if the funeral was not held at our parish, we still warmly invite you to remember your family member at this special liturgy. If you would like a recently departed loved one listed and prayed for by name during our Mass of Remembrance, please contact our Parish Office at 773.775.3833 or via email at [email protected] by Monday, October 29th. Please provide their first name, last name and their date of death. They will be in our prayers. All are welcome to join us on this special day as we gather together as a parish community to honor and give thanks for the lives of all our departed loved ones.

Immaculate Conception Parish Divine Renovation Workshop

On Saturday, October 20th, we hosted our third workshop centered on Fr. Mallon’s book as we faithfully continue our Divine Renovation process at our parish. Our sincere thanks to Anne Chrzan for kindly sharing her wisdom with us as the presenter of our workshop! As always, we would also like to take a moment to express our heartfelt appreciation to all our parishioners who have joined us on our journey by reading the book and participating in one of our workshops including: Theresa Borowski, Pat Furgat, Dick Jenkins, Kyle Liebich, Rob Lohman, Ed Niewinski, Amy Reichle, and Gloria Tomaino. Also in at- tendance, representing our Parish Staff: Rose Hegarty with a special guest appearance by Fr. Matt. Special thanks as well to both Mary Dosek and Nancy Kremer for their kind assistance preparing the Rectory Assembly for our workshop as well as for organizing the lunch portion of the event.

If you have not done so already, we continue to encourage you to join the discussion regarding the future of our parish by either attending one of our Divine Renovation Workshops or by attending our Divine Renovation Conversations meet- ings. All are welcome!

The Sisters of The Resurrection Honored at 9:30 A.M. Mass

For over 100 years, the Sisters of the Resurrection have served our Parish and community pri- marily in the field of education, health care and spiritual guidance. Many of our IC Alumni and parishioners have felt firsthand their compassion and commitment to the teachings of their foundress, Blessed Celine Borzecka who was beatified on October 27, 2007. On Sunday, Octo- ber 28th, IC will honor the Sisters of The Resurrection from the Immaculate Conception Province as well as the anniversary of the of their foundress, Blessed Celine at the 9:30 A.M. Mass this weekend. Light refreshments will be served in the vestibule of our Church immediately following the Mass.

Background on Blessed Celine The Congregation of the Sisters of the Resurrection was founded in in 1891 by a widow, Celine Borzecka, and her daughter, Hedwig. The formation of the Congregation was the first time in the history of the that a religious community of women was founded by a mother and a daughter. Blessed Celine was a dedicated wife, loving mother, empowered widow and devoted religious woman – truly a role model for today’s modern woman. She once said: “There are no small things in the service of God. Everything is great because everything is an expression of His most beloved will.”

Mother Celine was beatified on October 27, 2007 at John Lateran Basilica in Rome, . The miracle which qualified Mother Celine for this Beatification was the cure of a life-threatening head trauma to her great, great, great grandson, Andrew Mecherzynski-Wiktor. God performed the miracle, but Mother Celine is the one who interced- ed. The miracle took place shortly after the whole Congregation prayed a Novena to her for a miracle for Andrew.

Prayers for Graces through the intercession of Blessed Celine Borzecka Praise be to you, Lord Jesus, who have gifted blessed Celine with a special love for the paschal mystery and the de- sire to fulfill Your holy will. Grant us, through her intercession, the grace... for which we beg You, trusting in your unlim- ited love for us. Lord, may your Church rejoice by numbering your servant, Celine, among the saints for Your greater glory and for our good. You are God, Who lives and reigns with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, forever and ever. Amen.

The Sisters of the Resurrection Congregation called into action in Sister Anne Strzelecka, C.R. arrived in Chicago on February 2, 1900 to work with students in Catholic schools. In 1912, Sister Anne bought a tract of land in northwest Chicago and three years later opened Resurrection Academy as an elementary school and boarding school for girls. In 1920, Sister Anne bought the 52-acre Anderson onion farm and skating pond where Presence Resurrection Medical Center now stands. Resurrection High School was established in 1922 at 7432 W. Talcott Ave. After 40 years of growth, Resurrection High School opened its doors in a new, much larger building at the corner of Oriole and Talcott Ave. in 1962. In 1997, an $11 million construc- tion program added two state of the art science and computer labs, a technology center with internet capabilities, a 36-station fitness center, as well as air conditioning throughout the facility.
