About Project: PolavaramProject, is an under construction multi-purpose irrigation projectontheGodavariRiver inthe WestGodavariDistrict and E astGodavariDistrict in . The project has been accorded national project status by the Union Government of and will be the last to be accorded the status. Its reservoir spreads in to parts of chhattisgarh and Odhisa states also. START DATE: JULY1941 ACTIVE CAPACITY: 175tmcft (at 25.4m MSL crest level of spillway) MAXIMUM WATER DEPTH: 32.08 m at FRL 150ft MSL STATUS : UNDER CONSTRUCTION

CONTROVERSIES

 Sixty-four years after the initial conception of the project, the Government of Andhra Pradesh secured the environmental clearance from the central agency in 2005.  Meanwhile, work on the project began in April 2006 and was expected to be completed by February 2007.After 30% work of excavation work on the canals and 15% of the spillway works had been completed, the work was halted in May 2006 to seek clearance from the Ministry of Forests and Environment.  Odisha and Chhattisgarh have filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the Project which has probability of temporarily submerging large areas of its state and allege that union government are going ahead with the project without the necessary permissions from Environment Ministry. Under section 90 of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, union government has taken the responsibility of taking all clearances and approvals for the project execution and also declared the project as national project  In June 2018, it was reported that Naveen Patnaik, Chief Minister of Odisha had written to the Central Government to halt the Dispute with Odisha and Telangana In July 2018, a two member bench of the Supreme Court asked Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha and Chhattisgarh governments to frame the issues for arguments. Telangana said to the court it is in-principle agree for project but centre should takeup study by Neutral central institute like CWPRS, Pune to study impact of Backwater due to increase of 36 Lakh cusecs to 50 Lakh cusecs of design discharge, it is to ascertain Safety of important temple town like Bhadrachalam, Mining areas and heavy water Plant.Orissa also insisting for Backwater studies. In January 2018, it was reported that the project cost had escalated to Rs. 58,319 crore. In June 2018, The Water Ministry sanctioned Rs. 417.44 crore as grant-in-aid under the Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (AIBP) under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayi Yojana (PMKSY) towards the project. By June 2018, Rs. 13,000 crore had been spent on the project.

AT VISIT: In the afternoon at 12:30pm we visited to coffer dam in polavaram project. We divided in to 4 batches of students along with two faculty members. The following are the details of coffer dam Location:Upstream and Downstream of ECRF dam Design flood:28.74 lakhs cusec (1 in 100 year flood) U/s Coffer Dam Length: 2356m Top level of upstream coffer dam: 31.0m/42.50m D/s coffer dam length: 1613m Top level of downstream coffer dam: 28.00m Type of Cut off: Jet grouting 20m at U/s coffer dam 10m at D/s coffer dam

After this we went to spillway construction siteand known about it. Dam and spillways Type of dam-Concrete spill way (754 m), Non over flow masonry dam(560 m) & Earth dam (1600 m) Impounds- Height-39.28 m (129 ft) up to top of earth dam above the lowest river bed. Length-2,914 m (9,560 ft) Spillway type-Chute spillway Spillway capacity-5,000,000 cusecs at 140 ft msl A spillway is a structure used to provide the controlled release of flows from a dam or levee into a downstream area, typically the riverbed of the dammed river itself. Spillways ensure that the water does not overflow and damage or destroy the dam

PICTURES AT SPILLWAY CONSTRUCTION SITE We also gone through various construction equipments that were used at that site. following are some of the pictures and description about equipment. 1.Excavator 2.Dragline 3.Dumper 4.Backhoe 5.Transit mixers 6.stone crusher plant 1.EXCAVATOR Excavators (hydraulic) are heavy construction equipment consistboom, dipper (or stick), bucket and cab on a rotating platform known as the "house". The house sits atop an undercarriage with tracks or wheels. They are a natural progression from the steam shovels and often mistakenly called power shovels.

2.DRAGLINE: It has the ability to excavate very deep down the earth. Word drag is used because it has the ability to drag material at far distance from the machine

3.DUMPER A dumper is usually an open 4-wheeled vehicle with the load skip in front of the driver, while a dump truck has its cab in front of the load.

4.BACKHOE An excavating machine having a bucket that is attached to a rigid bar hinged toa boom and that is drawn toward the machine in operation.

5.TRANSIT MIXER Transit mixer is a piece of equipment that is used for transporting concrete/ mortar or ready mix material from a concrete batching plant directly to site

6.MOBILE CRANE A Crushing plant is one-stop crushing installation, which can be used for rock crushing, garbage crushing, building materials crushing and other similar operations. Crushing plants may be either fixed or mobile.

Finally we ended up our session with question and answers with the site supervisor.

Pattiseema lift irrigation project:

The project has one of the largest pump houses in Asia with 24 pumping units spread across an area of 7,476 sq m. The project has a combined capacity to discharge 240 cumecs of water. These pumps deliver water drawn from the river Godavari in Pattiseema into the Polavaram Project Right Main Canal for the benefit of farmers in the Krishna river delta. Under the Bachawat tribunal and inter-state agreement between Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh, 100 tmc of water can be diverted from River Godavari to River Krishna. Pattiseema project will bring the 100 TMC water to River Krishna. This project has faced lot of hurdles in initial days as it was opposed by YSRC party citing that it had no storage component.Though there were objections from opposition parties chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Nara Chandrababu Naidu has decided to take up this project. The bold decision taken by chief Minister has helped thousands of farmers cultivating 1.3 million acres in krishna delta which faces water shortage in the period June to August. The water pumped into canal from River Godavari would take 7 – 8 days to reach Prakasam Barrage after travelling by Gravity for about 160 km.

INSIDE VIEWS OF PATTISEEMA PROJECT

In 2015 as part of trial run it has lifted 8.8 tmc of godavari water to krishna delta which saved standing crops worth Rs2,500 crores during dry spell. During 2016- 17 kharif season 56 tmc of godavari water released along with 20 tmc from Nagarjuna sagar project to meet needs of 11,35,900 acres of agriculture as well as 1,51,912 acres of aquaculture in Krishna delta
