Fungal entomopathogens provide an attractive alternative to synthetic insecticides for weevil control because they pose a lesser risk to human health and the environment. This review summarises the available data on the performance of these entomopathogens when used against weevils in horticultural crops. We integrate these data with information on weevil biology, grouping species based on how their developmental stages utilise habitats in or on their hostplants, or in the soil. -

Burke An annotated list of the Curculionoidea (Coleoptem) (excluding Anthribidae, Platypodinae, and Scolytinae) is presented for the Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV) of Texas. The list includes species that occur in Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr, and Wigacy counties. Each of the 23S species in 97 genera is tteated according to its geographical range. Lower Rio Grande distribution, seasonal activity, plant associations, and biology. The taxonomic atTangement follows O' Brien &, Wibmer (I og2). A table of the species occuning in patxicular areas of the Lower Rio Grande Valley, such as the Boca Chica Beach area, the Sabal Palm Grove Sanctuary, Bentsen-Rio Grande State Park, and the Falcon Dam area is included. -

ANDERSON CANADA Mike Morris (retired) September 1992, Poland CURCULIO EDITORIAL COMMENTS Yes, this number of CURCULIO is late. It should have been prepared and sent out in September of 1996, but our museum has been going through a move to new facilities and things have been in turmoil. We are now settled in and most services are up and running again. The collections, which were packed away for the move, are also now accessible again. Seems that things went quite well and in fact our Entomology section fared quite well as the move into our new facilities resulted in a great deal more space than we already had. We’re now getting the laboratories prepared and should be back to full speed in the near future. Our mailing address has not changed! On another note, congratulations are in order for Rolf Oberprieler who has accepted the weevil systematics position at CSIRO in Canberra, Australia. This will be a great new challenge for Rolf and one in which we can all be sure he will fare admirably. The Australian weevil fauna is exceptionally diverse and interesting and with the recent books by Elwood Zimmerman, a great base has been set for further and more detailed work on the fauna. I understand Rolf will be there sometime this summer. Now all he has to do is master ‘G’Day’ and ‘mate’ and he’ll have it made! Best wishes to Rolf and his family. -

[email protected] Abstract This paper presents a discussion on the taxonomy of weevils of the genus Anthonomus and presents diagnostic characters useful for the identification of adult and immature stages of the genus. In addition, I ran a search in the USDA’s AQAS database for interceptions of species of Anthonomus of quarantine importance that have been intercepted at United States ports of entry. In total, six species of quarantine importance have been intercepted: Anthonomus flavus, Anthonomus grandis, Anthonomus melanosticus, Anthonomus pomorum, Anthonomus rubi, and Anthonomus sisyphus. Photographs and information on the origin and hosts of these interceptions are included. Twenty-seven species are found in the Paleocene, 442 in the Eocene and 94 in the Oligocene. The greatest diversity of Curculionoidea is described from the Eocene of Europe and North America. The richest faunas are known from Eocene localities, Florissant (177 species), Baltic amber (124 species) and Green River formation (75 species). The family Curculionidae dominates in all Paleogene localities. Weevil species associated with herbaceous vegetation are present in most localities since the middle Paleocene. Oise amber has eight species, Baltic amber has 118 species, and Rovno amber has 16 species. Nine new genera and 18 new species are described from Baltic amber. Four new synonyms are noted: Palaeometrioxena Legalov, 2012, syn. nov. is synonymous with Archimetrioxena Voss, 1953; Paleopissodes weigangae Ulke, 1947, syn. nov. is synonymous with Electrotribus theryi Hustache, 1942; Electrotribus erectosquamata Rheinheimer, 2007, syn. nov. is synonymous with Succinostyphlus mroczkowskii Kuska, 1996; Protonaupactus Zherikhin, 1971, syn. nov. is synonymous with Paonaupactus Voss, 1953. Keys for Eocene amber Curculionoidea are given. There are the first records of Aedemonini and Camarotini, and genera Limalophus and Cenocephalus in Baltic amber. Taxonomic study of the subfamily Anthonominae in Japan deals with 20 species in the genera Atzfhonomus and Bradybum including 8 new species. These new species are Anthonomus alni, A. miyakawai, A. uenoi, A. tyukyuensis, A. lakahashii, A. mali, A. minor and A. okinawanus. Anthonomus undulatus Gyllenhal is recorded from Japan for the first time. Keys to genera and species, diagnosis of each species, habitus photographs and line illustrations of important features are provided. Weevils of the genera Anthonomus and Brachyonyx were first grouped together into the “Tribus Anthonomina” by Thomson (1859) and the European species were monographed by Des- brothers (1868) including the genus Bradybafus. This delimitation to the tribe Anthonomini has been accepted thereafter by Reitter (1912,16), Hoffmann (1954), Dieckmann (1968), Smrecynski (1972) and many others. This taxon was upgraded to the subfamily rank by Schenkling & Marshall (1934), Morimoto (1962) and Burke (1976). Another definition to the tribe Anthonomini was given by Lacordaire (1863), who divided the “Tribus Anthonomides” into “Anthonomides vrais” and “Orchestides”. This system was followed by Leconte & Horn (1876). -

Comments concerning natural history and microhabitats of larvae are provided. This is the first detailed description with illustrations for the last instar larva and pupa of Tipula (Nippotipula) sinica. Pupal characteristics resemble those of most species from advanced lineages within the subfamily Tipulinae. And, also it described with habitats and biological notes of Tipula (Nippotipula) sinica. Crane fly larvae, categorization as found in this survey indicate a taxonomic stream and are expected to help.
