World Series of Fighting Signs Top Free Agent Welterweight Rousimar Palhares World Series of Fighting signs top free agent welterweight Rousimar Palhares LAS VEGAS (Nov. 26, 2013) – World Series of Fighting is happy to announce the addition of Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace Rousimar Palhares to the company’s welterweight roster. The submission master signed a multi-fight deal with the promotion and is expected to debut in the World Series of Fighting decagon in early 2014. “Rousimar is one of the most talented athletes in mixed martial arts, and we’re excited to have him as a part of our organization,” World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo said. A 33-year-old Brazilian native, Palhares made his professional debut in 2006. For the past five-plus years, he’s competed for the UFC, picking up eight wins during that time, including six victories by submission. Palhares has been the subject of much public scrutiny since his release from the UFC following a 31-second submission win over Mike Pierce in which the Brazilian did not immediately let go of the heel hook that ended the fight. However, Palhares and his camp have vowed to avoid any further potentially unsportsmanlike transgressions. MMA legend Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira has also volunteered to help coach Palhares and help improve his mental focus in the cage. “Rodrigo Nogueira and I would like to thank the World Series of Fighting team for working with us and signing Rousimar Palhares to fight in their promotion,” Palhares’ manager, Alex Davis, said. “We believe that Rousimar will become World Series of Fighting champion and give World Series of Fighting and its fans many great fights.” Palhares’s signing comes less than two weeks before World Series of Fighting hosts its first Canadian event with “WSOF 7: Kharakanyan vs. Palmer” on Dec. 7 at the PNE Agrodome in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Georgi Karakhanyan and Lance Palmer headline the NBCSN-televised card, competing for the inaugural WSOF featherweight title. The telecast starts at 6 p.m. PT/9 p.m. ET and is preceded by undercard fights streaming live on www.wsof.com beginning at 3:30 p.m. PT/6:30 p.m. ET. The myth of the unbeatable fighter is just that, a myth. In what will go down as the single most memorable UFC fight in history, Ronda Rousey was not only defeated, but systematically destroyed by a fighter and a coaching staff that had spent years preparing for that night. On 2/28, Holly Holm and Ronda Rousey were the two co-headliners on a show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The idea was that Holm, a former world boxing champion, would impressively knock out Raquel Pennington, a .500 level fighter who was known for exchanging blows and not taking her down. Rousey was there to face Cat Zingano, a fight that was supposed to be the hardest one of her career. Holm looked unimpressive, barely squeaking by in a split decision. Rousey beat Zingano with an armbar in 14 seconds.

Also known as Vale Tudo, No Holds Barred (NHB), Cage Fighting, Ultimate Fighting, Pride Fighting, Sougo Kakutogi Focus Various Hardness Full contact Olympic sport No Mixed martial arts (MMA), popularly known as cage fighting or ultimate fighting is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques and skills, from a mixture of other combat sports, to be used in competitions. The rules allow the use of both striking as well as grappling techniques, both while standing and while on the ground. Such competitions allow fighters of different backgrounds to compete. The roots of modern mixed martial arts can be traced back to various mixed style contests that took place throughout Europe, Japan and the Pacific Rim during the early 1900s. The combat sport of Vale Tudo that had developed in Brazil from the 1920s was brought to the United States by the Gracie family in 1993 with the founding of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Professional MMA events had also been held in Japan by Shooto starting back in 1989. In due course the more dangerous Vale Tudo style bouts of the early UFCs were made safer with the implementation of additional rules, leading to the popular regulated form of MMA seen today. Originally promoted as a competition with the intention of finding the most effective martial arts for real unarmed combat situations,

The main event will see former lightweight champion and current No. 1 ranked featherweight mixed martial artist Frankie “The Answer” Edgar face fellow American Urijah “The California Kid” Faber in a five-round featherweight battle at 145 pounds. At 33, Edgar (17-4-1, fighting out of Toms River, New Jersey, USA) is proving himself to be a force in the 145lb division.
