Commencing with a performance of Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca on Saturday, August 21, the 2021–22 Season marks the inauguration of Eun Sun Kim’s tenure as Caroline H. Hume Music Director and a reemergence of opera at the War Memorial Opera House, which reopens with newly installed custom seats and accessibility enhancements. A Fulbright scholar to Italy, Ms. Anderson was subsequently principal flute of the Orchestra del Teatro Massimo in Palermo. She is presently principal flute with the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Symphony in Iowa, a guest artist and clinician at many colleges and music series around the country, and on the faculty of Grinnell College. -

Pittsburgh Opera announces its 2008-2009 season, “A Journey of Imagination” at the Benedum Center for the Performing Arts. Artistic Director Christopher Hahn says, “One of the wonderful things about opera is that it has the power to take us out of our ordinary lives into another world. This season we visit the ancient Middle East for Samson & Dalila, sunny Italy for Don Pasquale, the Latin Quarter of Paris for La bohème, and Jazz Age North Africa for The Italian Girl in Algiers.” Another important journey for the company is The Grapes of Wrath, a new opera by Ricky Ian Gordon and Michael Korie based on John Steinbeck’s classic American novel. SIR ANDREW DAVIS Music Director and Principal Conductor, Lyric Opera of Chicago Biography (Full Version) Sir Andrew Davis has served as music director and principal conductor of Lyric Opera of Chicago since 2000. His contract with Lyric Opera was recently extended through the 2020-2021 season. In January 2013 Sir Andrew began his tenure as chief conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. He is also conductor laureate of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (having previously served as principal conductor), conductor laureate of the BBC Symphony Orchestra (his tenure as that ensemble’s chief conductor was the longest since that of its founder Sir Adrian Boult) and former music director of Glyndebourne Festival Opera. The English conductor begins his 2014-2015 season at Lyric Opera for the company’s new production of Don Giovanni , as well as Strauss’s Capriccio. Following Lyric Opera’s 60th Anniversary Diamond Gala, Sir Andrew heads to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for a series of concerts, and then to the Metropolitan Opera to conduct Hansel und Gretel and a new production of The Merry Widow directed by Susan Stroman. In the New Year, Sir Andrew returns to Lyric Opera to conduct the monumental Tannhauser, and Lyric’s presentation of David Pountney’s production of Mieczyslaw Weinberg’s The Passenger. The rest of the 2014-2015 season includes returns to Melbourne for the continuation of Sir Andrew’s exploration of all the Mahler Symphonies with the MSO as well as performances of Britten’s War Requiem, and engagements with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the BBC Philharmonic, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, The Toronto Symphony (Verdi’s Requiem), and performances with the Philharmonia Orchestra at the Three Choirs Festival. -

A 2017 Guide FEATURE ARTICLE Training Opera’s Next Generation A Tale of Two Festivals April 2017 Festivals Editor’s Note In our largest and most varied Guide to Summer Festivals yet, we focus on a common thread: training the next generation of performers and the artistic personnel who support them. At many festivals, young artists receive private lessons, coaching sessions, master classes, or all of the above during the day. By night they are either performing, observing the seasoned pros who train them by day, or a combination of the two. But honing or developing the skills of tomorrow’s generation of musicians is only part of the equation. It’s summertime, after all, and while the living may not exactly be “easy,” it’s certainly a lot more relaxed than during the season or school year. Consider the difference between waiting in the green-room line post-concert A 2017 Guide to shake the maestro’s hand vs. running into him in the festival cafeteria line, or at the local pub after the concert, or on a morning jog. Such is the kind of cross-fertilization for which festivals are known, and one of the reasons they are such ideal settings for rising artists. Sometimes the trainees are fully integrated into the schedule, such as at the Santa Fe Opera, where young artists are featured, often in leading roles. Sometimes they work independently of the main event, such as at Tanglewood, where the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, for instance, is comprised entirely of TMC Fellows and plays its own concerts, alongside the center-stage Boston Symphony Orchestra (whose members form much of the faculty). -

It is our hope that you will be able to add this to your existing curriculum in order to expand your students’ understanding of opera, literature, history, and the fine arts. Materials in the Study Guide may be copied and distributed to students. Some students may wish to go over the information at home if there is insufficient time to discuss in class. Make the opera experience more meaningful and enjoyable by sharing with them knowledge and background on opera and Otello before they attend. Please Note: The Dress Rehearsal is the last opportunity the singers will have on stage to work with the orchestra before Opening Night. Since vocal demands are so great on opera singers, some singers choose not to sing in full voice during the Dress Rehearsal in order to preserve their vocal chords and avoid unnecessary strain.
