2006 DePauw Football Preview New Coach Looks to Continue Winning Tradition

The Tigers look forward to the 2006 season with a new head coach and several new faces in the starting lineup, but look to continue the winning ways that have produced 10 straight .500 or better seasons and a 15-4 mark over the last two campaigns. Matt Walker, a 1999 DePauw graduate, was named the head coach during the summer and inherits a program that returns 30 lettermen and nine starters from a team that finished the 2005 season with a 7-2 overall record and a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference co-championship with a 5-0 league mark. The Tigers’ two losses in 2005 came by a total of eight points to a pair of teams that posted a combined 23-3 record. “I’m really excited for the season to begin,” Walker said. “This team can accomplish some big things if we reach our potential.”

Origin of the Tiger Nickname

On March 4, 1918, the DePauw “D” Athletic Association selected the nickname Tigers from student suggestions in a contest sponsored by the Association. The final suggestions were Tigers, Yellow De- mons, Yellow Jackets, Wasps and Fighting Parsons. The school colors of Old Gold and Black had already been established and they wanted to pick something to work with them, thus Tigers.
