Theme and Genre in 4Q177 and Its Scriptural Selections
THEME AND GENRE IN 4Q177 AND ITS SCRIPTURAL SELECTIONS Mark Laughlin and Shani Tzoref Jerusalem 4Q1771 has conventionally been classified as a “thematic pesher,”2 or, more recently as “thematic commentary,”3 or “eschatological midrash.”4 It is one of a group of Qumranic compositions in which the author cites and interprets biblical texts, applying them to the contemporary experience of his community, which he understands to be living in the eschatological era. Unlike the continuous pesharim, thematic pesha- rim are not structured as sequential commentaries on a particular 1 John M. In Times Of Trouble Behold, a king will reign in righteousness, And princes will rule with justice. A man will be as a hiding place from the wind, And a cover from the tempest, As rivers of water in a dry place, As the shadow of a great rock in a weary land. Isaiah 32:1-2 We look for Jesus to be there always, but especially in those dark memories. Without the True Lord Jesus, we often do not have enough capacity to face the most frightening and disturbing episodes of our past. Because He was there when we needed Him most - in times of trouble - we experience Him as our hiding, sheltering, protecting companion through it all. Psalms Psalm
Cultivate - PSALMS PSALM 126: We now come to the seventh of the "Songs of Ascent," a lovely group of Psalms that God's people would sing and pray together as they journeyed up to Jerusalem. Here in this Psalm they are praying for the day when the Lord would "restore the fortunes" of God's people (vs.1,4). 126 is a prayer for spiritual revival and reawakening. The first half is all happiness and joy, remembering how God answered this prayer once. But now that's just a memory... like a dream. They need to be renewed again. So they call out to God once more: transform, restore, deliver us again. Don't you think this is a prayer that God's people could stand to sing and pray today? Pray it this week. We'll pray it together on Sunday. God is here inviting such prayer; he's even putting the very words in our mouths. PSALM 127: This is now the eighth of the "Songs of Ascent," which God's people would sing on their procession up to the temple. We've seen that Zion / Jerusalem / The House of the Lord are all common themes in these Psalms. But the "house" that Psalm 127 refers to (in v.1) is that of a dwelling for a family. 127 speaks plainly and clearly to our anxiety-ridden thirst for success. How can anything be strong or successful or sufficient or secure... if it does not come from the Lord? Without the blessing of the Lord, our lives will come to nothing. -

Psalms The Human Condition Life in the ancient world was nasty, brutish, and short, and ancient Israel was no exception. The Psalms, more than any other book in the Bible, provide a window to the experiences of ordinary people. Out of the Depths Many of the psalms of complaint are cries of despair: “out of the depths I cry to you O Lord” (Psalm 130:1). Life is lived in the shadow of death, and of the netherworld Sheol: For my soul is full of troubles, and my life draws near to Sheol. I am counted among those who go down to the Pit . like those whom you remember no more, for they are cut off from your hand. You have put me in the depths of the Pit, in the regions dark and deep. (Psalm 88:3,5b-6) Human life was not entirely extinguished at death, but afterlife in Sheol was nothing to look forward to. Sheol is imagined as a dark damp basement, a pit from which there is no escape. There is no enjoyment in Sheol. The dead cannot even praise the Lord (Psalm 115:17). Indeed, in Sheol there is not even remembrance of God (Psalm 6:5). Consequently, life is lived in fear of going down into Sheol: The waters have come up to my neck. I sink in deep mire where there is no foothold . Do not let the flood sweep over me or the deep swallow me up or the Pit close its mouth over me (Psalm 69:1-2, 15). A Temporary Reprieve When the Psalmist prays to be delivered from Sheol, the request is for a temporary reprieve or for a postponed sentence. -

Directory | Site Map | Explanation | Hebrew Bible Studies David the Mashiach by Paul Sumner David ben Jesse of Bethlehem is the central human character in the Hebrew Bible. While Moses spoke with God "face to face" (Exod 33:11; Deut 5:4), David was God's son (Ps 89:27-28), a relationship never attributed to the great giver of the Torah. Centuries later, when the prophets of Israel gazed into the future, they did not speak of another Moses, but another David. David was the paradigm of the biblical messiah, the one anointed with the Ruach of God: Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed [mashach] him in the midst of his brothers; and the Ruach of the LORD came mightily upon David from that day forward. (1 Samuel 16:13) David the son of Jesse declares: And the man who was raised on high declares, The anointed [mashiach] of the God of Jacob, And the sweet psalmist of Israel, The Ruach of the LORD spoke by me, And his word was on my tongue. (2 Samuel 23:1-2) In the Bible — especially the books of Samuel, Isaiah, and the Psalms — there is a constellation of ideals, principles, and hopes that surrounds King David. After his death, the House of David lasted nearly four more centuries (961-587 BCE). But even long after its collapse, the constellation of David Theology elements continued to provide prophetic guidance and shaped Israel's identity and hopes — well into the First Century, even to this day. In the texts below, "David" is both the biological son of Jesse, as well as David's many grandsons who ruled in Jerusalem in his stead, in his name. -

Attachment: The Gospel and Our Families The Gospel and Manhood Dr. David Platt June 15, 2008 THE GOSPEL AND MANHOOD Psalm 128:1-6 If you have a Bible, and I hope you do, I invite you to open with me to Psalm 128. This was supposed to be the end of the series on Attachment, looking at the gospel and our families. I hope and pray that this series has been profitable for you and for your family, for this community of faith. In many senses, it seems incomplete. There is so much more we can obviously dive into when it comes to the gospel and womanhood, when it comes to the gospel and singleness, the gospel and marriage, the gospel and parenting, the gospel and children. There’s so much there that we could dive into. But it's even incomplete in another sense - and this is where I have been convicted, to be quite honest with you, over the last couple of weeks. Last week, when I was preparing, and then this week as well, I sensed God confirming that we need to extend this series a couple of weeks. It’s obvious in our culture today, and in the church today, that the picture of family is not quite as clean cut as singleness, marriage, parenting, children. There are so many different situations represented in the culture and in the Church where this is blending together. There’s no question that the adversary is attacking the biblical picture of family that we see here. As a result, what I want to do over the next two weeks is I want us to dive into two of the most important areas that the adversary’s attacking in the culture and in the church today. -

ADDENDA TO PSALM 145 RAYMOND APPLE Psalm 145, colloquially known as Ashrei, is one of the best known biblical passages in the Jewish liturgy. It occurs three times in the daily prayers, more often than any other psalm. It appears first in the early morning pesukei d’zimra (Passages of Praise); next in the final section of the morning service; and also at the beginning of the afternoon service. This threefold usage fulfils the principle found in TB Berakhot 4b that whoever recites this psalm three times a day is assured of a place in the afterlife. The triple recitation exempli- fies a tendency in Jewish liturgy whereby important phrases and quotations are said more than once, with a preference for three times. TB Berakhot 4b notes that Psalm 145 has two special features to commend it. The first is that, being constructed as an alphabetical acrostic (with the exception of the letter nun),1 it enlists the whole of the aleph-bet to extol the deeds of the Almighty. It should be added, however, that there are several other psalms with alphabetical acrostics. The second is that it articulates the tenet of God’s generosity and providence: You give it openhandedly, feeding every creature to its heart’s content (verse 16; cf. Ps. 104:28, JPSA transla- tion). The Talmud does not call the psalm by its current title of Ashrei, but by its opening words, Tehillah l’David, A song of praise; of (or by, or in the style of) David, arising out of which the name Tehillim (Praises) is applied to the whole psalter. -
