Introduction

This checklist was compiled in conjunction with a chapt€ron the coastalvegetalion of south- westemAustralia preparedfor a yolume "Dry CoastalEcosystems of theWorld" editedby E. van der Maarel and D. Goodall, to be publishedby Elsevier. By definition in the book, coastalvegetation is that ofbeaches, dunes and cliffs. It hasbeen taken to includeconsolidated dunes and thus tle coastal limestonethroughout, as well as headlandsand slopesunder the influence of the sea.

The coastalflora of south-westemAustralia hasbeen made known and populadzedover many yearsbyc.G. Smithin a seriesofhandbooks (1957, 1973, 1985) and Mr Smithkindly loanedhis card index asan initial basisfor thepresent compilation. Although thetides ofhis successiveworks suggest that they relate to the whole South-WestBotanical Province, in fact the flora listed is only that found within a radiusof some50 km ofPerth, andit wasnecessary to augmenthis databy referenceto other authors. The coastof the South-West Botanical Province extends from Tamalaclose to Shark B ay in thenorth round to Twilight Coveon theGreat Ausfalian Bight (Beard1980), a distanceexceeding 2200km. Withinthislength the coastal islands havereceivedintensive study oftheh flora, initially by Willis (1953)for tlrc RechercheArchipelago, lar€rly by Abbott in Abbottand Black (1978),Abbott and Wason (1978),Abbott (1980,1981), Marchant and Abbott (1981). Thesepapers incorporare rhe recordsof earlier collectors. The flora of the islandscan thereforebe said to be well known.

The flora of pioneer vegetationon the mainland coastwas simila y studied in detail by Sauer (1%5) at 26 siteswithin the South-WestBotrnical hovince wherehe listed 110qpecies. By combining all the datatogether it canbe inferred that the flora of the whole south-westemlitloral is well known. For the vegetationof consolidateddunes and headlandsbehind the immediatelittoral however we haveverymuch less information. The Drummond Sub-district is well coveredin detailedflora liss by Bell,Loneraganand Dodd (1979)with 209species, Bridgewater andzammit(L979) 103species, Fox, Downesand Maslin (1980)350 species, and Bactshall and Bridgewater (1981) wift 23 species. For the Irwin Districtan unpublished list of 340taxa was mad€ available by theauthors, R.T. Wills andD.T. "Beekeepers' Bell, compiled for a naturereserve, the Reserve"No. 24496 in Lal 29'30' o 30'00'. In theWarren Sub-district there is a shortlist of28 speciesfor a localitynoar Albany by Enright(19?8), KingiaVol. I, No.3 (1990) andat tie eastemexuemity of theEyre District a list of I 12taxa by Nelson( 1974) for theflora ofcliff- topdunes along the Great Australian Bight. For thelong stretches ofcoastline between, the memoirs of tlre VegetationSurvey of WesiemAustralia - Beard(1972-80, 1975), F.G. Smift (1972-73)- contan manyrecords but are not exhaustive as they tend to mentionmerely the most conspicuous or dominalt .

Thechecklist was compiled using all theabove sources. It is believedto bereasonably complete for littoral plants but less so for those of consolidateddunes further inland. Nomenclaturewas carefullychecked against Green's (1985) Census which is regardedas the ultimareauthority for WesternAustralia, except that I reject the ganrsAllocasualiz4 L. Johnson. Recordsof a doubtful "sp.","aff." character,e.g. as or queried, wereomitted. Infraspecific taxaare notincluded. Due to no- menclaturechanges anumber ofnames not included in Green'sCensus came to light, and advice was soughtas to how theseshould be interpreted. The checklistis arrangedwith thefamilies in taxonomic orderas in Green'sCensus. Within families, genera and species are aranged alphabetically. "Disrict" Thecapital letters in the columnofthe checklist refer to Botanical Distdcts (Beard 1980) asfollows:

I = kwin Disfict D = DrummondSubdisnict w = WanenS ub-district E = Eyre District

Sricdy speakingWarren is separatedfrom Drummondon tie north andEyre on the eastby a short stretch of the Menzies Sub-district in each casebut this has been ignored here for practical purposes. The Irwin Disfrict hasa Xerothermomediterraneanclimafe with annualrainfall of 300-500 mm and7-8 dry monthsper year. The Drummond Sub-districthas a Thermomediterraneanclimate, rainfall 600-1000mm and5{ dry months. The WarrenSuMistrict hasa Mesomediterraneanclimate, rainfall650-1500mm / and34 dry months. The EyreDistrict is Thermomediteranean, rainfa[ 5m-7m mm, 5-6 dry months(Classification from Bagnoulsand Gaussen 1957). "Habitat" Theletters a,b,c and d in the columnofthe checklistclassifyhabitats as follows: a = Aquatic.Plants ofestuary and lake margins, salt marshes, freshwater swarnps, phreatophytesand plants of ephemeralpools. Sea-grasseshave been omitted. b = Beach. Sandfixers and colonizerson beaches, and sandpatches disturbed by burrowing birds, plants of foredunesand mobile dunes. c = Cliff. Includesrock pavementsand outcrops, and steep spray-swept slopes. d = Dune. Stableand consolidated dunes, also granitic and other matured soils included in "dl" the coastalbelt. A qualification is madefor speciesconsidered to be essentially littoral, i.e. occurring underthe influenceof the sea, although on a stablesubstrate. Other "d" plants are consideredto be inland specieswhich happento occur on coastalmaterial.

Habitatswerc givenby Smith (1973)for all listedplants and by manyautlnrs for all or somespecies. It hasbeen possible to classify all speciesin the checklist with varying degreesof certainty; someof coursequalify for morethan one habitat. J.S. Beard, Checklist of dte coasal flola of the South-Wast Botanical Prcvince

Thenumberofcoastalspecies listed by Smithrose from 359 in1973to4921ntheL985 edition. The presentlist for thewhole coasdine comprises 1067 species, and is still incomplete. One hundred and sixty-sixspecies or 15.57o are naturalized aliens.

Speciesrecorded by Districts total asfollows:

kwin District 380 Drummond 6n WarIen 2X Eyre 45

The differencesarc believeddue principallyto inequalityin the publishedrecords, although inequalitiesin theextent and t)?e ofhabitatsalso exist.

Wedandspecies typified as "a" wereincluded for completenessalthough not alwaysclassified as "Dry Coastal".Some occur in b, c andd habitats, mainly halophytes which occurboth in saltmarshes and in areassubject to seaspray. The true wetland specieswhich arenot recordedfor any additional habitatnumber 96 (ofwhich 16are aliens) so that the Dry Coastalflorabecomes 971. Thisnumber is againdivisible into 308littoral speciesOabitats b,c ard dl) 663 inlandspecies. It night be supposedfiar naturalized aliens would be more ftequent in the open, distubed littoral habitats, and in fact the numberrecorded for the littoral is 72 or 23Eaof littoral species,as against 78 or 1270of the inland specres.

We are left with 236 native speciesfor the littoral and 585 for the inland group, as well as 80 "aquatics". Endemismamong these was investigated by looking up the namesin the flora checklists for theother Australian States, i.e. Jessop (1984) for SouthAustralia, Forbes €t al. (1984)for , Jacobsand Pickard (1981) for New SouthWales, and a compulerprint-out issued by lie Northem TerritoryHerbarium. does not publisha censusbut the likelihoodofa south-westem speciesoccurring thereand not in the interveningStates was consideredremote. The sameapplies 10Tasmania. Ifanamewasnot found in thissearch it wasassumed to represent an endemic to Western Austalia. Specieswhich were found to occur in other Stateswere further classifiedas Australian if confinedto Australia,or ashaving a widerdistribution. Only theNew SouthWales census among thoseconsulted gives distributions, so that additional roference was mado to Black'sFlora of (1960, 1978). There are no doubterrors in thistreatment but theyshould notbe significant.

Resultsof tiis studywere as follows, in numbersofnative species:

"aquatics" It will be seenthat endemism varies greatly between the threegroups. In the a large proportionis cosmopolitan,a similar proponionAustralian, and a smallernumber endemic. In general i1is found that 'rater-dwelling plants, such as reeds of the families Cyperaceaeand Juncaceae, tend to be cosmopolilan,salt-marsh species are Australia-wide,while peripheratspecies include the endemics.Among the littoral group cosmopolitan species are few, andendemics slighdy outnumber Australia-wide species. Inland species,as may be expected, share the generalcharacteristic of the south-westernflora with avery highrate ofendemism (7770), therest mainly Ausfalian (20%),with cosmopoliansreduced to aninsignificant number (3%).

It haslong beenknown thatthe flora of the South-WestBotanical Province is characterizedby greatendemic richness (Beard 1969, Marchant 1973) though reliable figures are still not available. Theless endemic, more cosmopolitan character of wetlandsin theProvince was shown by McComb and Mccomb (1967). Freshwaterlakes and sw:rmpsprovide habitats which are widely similar throughoutthe world and, subjectto climate, can be expectedto be occupiedby cosmopolitan species. Both salt-marshesand the littoral providehabitats which occur generallyin southem Australia, and containa high proportion ofAustralian species.South-westem Australia in generalis highly specializedboth in climateand soils- especiallysoils - so thatits flora hasbecome highly specializedalso.

It is possibleto enquirefurther whether any ofthe 121Westem Australian endemics among the littoral speciesare locally endemic to a particular district. Fifty three of them are recordedin the chscklistfromasingledistrictonly: Irwin6,Drummond9,Warren l,Eyre 37. Howeverthismay only bean apparent effect due to a lackofrecords. Distributions by Districtsare given in Beard(1970), and in so far asthis information is reliable,26 of themappear ao be confinedto a singledistrict:

IrwinDistrict Grevilleaargtrophylla Izpidiwn linifulium Pimeleafloribunda

Drummond: Grevilleacritlvnifolia

Warren: None

Eyre: Adenanthosforrestii, dryandroid.es Banksiamedia B anksiapraemorsa Boronia clbiflora Bossiaeddentata Ca I o t hamnus s p inifo lius Dillwyniapungens Dryandra pterldifolia Galnia drunmandti Goo denia quadrilo cularis Hakeaclavata buxifulius Leplospermumsericeum Lomandrarigida Melqleucqviolacea Orylobiutn &utrurcndii Poa porphyroclados Stylidiumghndulosum Stypheliahainesii Ver tic or dia mlnutiflora X anthorrho ea plaryphy lla

The distributionsgiven in Beard( 1970 Second&lition) do appearto lend suppot to the datain the checklist. Few of theseappear to be strictly littoral speciesconfined to the littoral itself. The only obyiouscase is &ptospermumsericeurz which is confinedto the RechercheIslands and adjacent mainland. J.S.Beard, Che'klist of the coastalflon of the South-WestBotanical Province 259
