It was finals week at school and I had to make a decision. I could stay in Chicago and work my ass off on projects that I frankly didn’t care too much for or I could travel to New York for the ESA Northeast Regionals and see what the contest scene was all about. When I first booked my ticket for NY to go with co-director and GL surfer, Jim Hoop, I never thought I’d actually get some good shots to bring home. Most of the contest footage I’ve seen was held in pretty poor conditions, rarely ever getting good and glassy. Coming from the lakes, I was just glad to see the ocean again. Sacrificing a semester to B’s and C’s to visit a place I’ve never been before and shoot my first contest was definitely a choice I’d never take back. I found that New York has a lot to offer any surfer; with the right conditions and equipment you can definitely shred your brains out.

I’ll keep this short - just like the flight. Jim and I were on our just a few guys out and a handful of people setting up for tomorrow while the rain came and went. It felt just like home for me; Sunday came quicker than I wanted and I’d be leaving the way with our rental car in under three hours from leaving the gate morning. I snapped a few shots off and decided to surf for the rest shooting in three layers, a winter coat and gloves. A few good sets next day. Once the conest ended and the trophy’s were handed at O’hare. It was one of the shorest flight I’ve ever been on and of the afternoon. The waves were only knee to waist high and would come up for the competitors to work with here and there, out, people were fleeing as if a hurricane was coming. The scene definitely beat the seventeen hour drive our friend and regional not the cleanest one could ask for, but it was definitely workable. but in the meantime I’d be looking for anything else interesting to quickly diminished as the swell cleaned up for the few of us that director, Lester Priday made from Kenosha, Wisconsin with his The next morning, the sky was covered grey with rain clouds shoot to fill in the time. Hoping that he wasn’t done for the day, I got out NON-STOPNON-STOP TO TO to to see if he was still willing to do a quick shoot. Back at the parking lot I found Chris talking with the rest of NON-STOP TO NON-STOP the guys I had come with and the announcer for the weekend, Pat Emery. They had been back to the hotel down the road NON- and said the waves by the room were coming in a lot better than before. We were about to go check it out when New new york York locals and ESA competitors, Jeff Anthony and Alex Fawess pulled up to see what was going on. We told them we were going back to our room to surf the break over there and hopefully get some good shots off. Quickly inviting everyone back to our room we packed up our gear and headed out. Within minutes we were back in the comfort of our hotel room witnessing the steep, glassy waves rolling in just yards from our back door. Before I knew it everyone was in STOP TO the water and I was filling up memory card after memory card full of images. As soon as the first set hit, the show was on. Alex was punting airs off like it was nothing as Chris demonstrated how to become a professional asassin of waves. For about a half an hour the sun came out from behind the clouds and showed just how much they were tearing it up. Jeff and Pat were getting some good ones too; finding some tight little tubes here and there to pull into. These guys were nonstop. Constantly pushing their limits, taking chances with airs and insane snaps on the bigger sets that would roll through; our eyes were glued to them. Being from the Mid-West, it’s not everyday you get the chance to shoot with such talented surfers on some nice waves. Just watching them surf was the icing on the cake for me. My little “vacation” was fulfilled at that point. Coming to New York was definitely a good experience even though I was coming home to finals at school. I got to meet a lot of new people, enjoyed some surf with my friends and got a ton of good shots to bring home with me. Aside from the less than perfect conditions at the begining of the weekend, the trip out east was definitely worth the risk of a few points off my gpa. The way I see it is - you only have one life, so you better get out there while you can. I’m not too good with words, so I’ll just Alex puts in some airtime behind the hotel. let the rest of the pictures do the talking from here on out.

After years of having mid-winter ‘surfer-only’ parties Larry and Lee Williams of Sheboygan, Wisc. had an idea. To hold a freshwater surfing competition every Labor Day weekend to celebrate the beginning of the Midwest surfing season. Since 1988 ‘Longboard Larry’ and ‘Waterflea’ have watched the Dairyland Surf Classic grow to epic proportions. In 2006 the Classic touched approximately 4.6 million people (Teamworks Media Stats) who read newspapers like the Chicago Tribune, New York Times, and the Honolulu Star Bulletin. In 2007 NBC’s ‘Today Show’ covered the largest gathering of freshwater surfers in the world along with National Radio programs, MSNBC and many filmmakers from around the United States. If you drank one too many (ya know ya did) it’s time to wake up bright and early for Saturday’s Dawn Patrol at Northside beach. A surf shop style set-up attracts those looking for a board, wetsuit or any other surf-related product. The day continues with an all-ages paddling competition that includes the infamous Pro-Paddle. First place finishers walk away with brand new donated by Corona, Third Coast Surf Shop and EOS Surf Shop. Saturday night culminates with a potluck-style-luau on the beach featuring a huge raffle and awards banquet. If your able to get out of bed or off that bench you crashed out on, Sunday is reserved for recovery or perhaps a new surf discovery of you own. The first annual Surfrider Foundation Fundraising event was a complete success! To celebrate International Surfing Day, the Surfrider Lake Michigan Chapter held two events to raise awareness and a few bucks for our 2009 Coldwwater Testing Program in partnership with Grand Valley State University’s Annis Water Resource Institute. Surfrider member & avid surfer, Matt Cooper will conduct an ecoli-testing program in the “off-season” during wave days to create a groundbreaking baseline study for the scientific community.

Part one of the events included a beach clean-up at Holland State Park where about fifteen or more locals all grabbed ISD garbage bags (complete withSurf logos) and scoured the beach for trash. After filling about seven bags full of trash, (apparently the beach was cleaned earlier that day?!) everyone jumped on a SUP to cruise across the glassy water and enjoy the sunset.
