Page 2 of 71 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

What an interesting season! For the first time we had a weekend called off not because of rain but because of heat only then to discover the mens final series thrown into chaos with the wet weather.

We had 189 players in the junior competition, 209 senior players and a girls team making us one of the largest Clubs in the Sutherland Shire. In terms of on field performance we won 4 premierships (3 in mens and the girls summer competition) there were 13 centuries scored, 22 Michelles and 3 hat tricks.

A great feature of the season were the presentation nights for the seniors at our good friends down at Boyles following the conclusion of the mens finals and the new format for the junior presentation held after the conclusion of the junior finals. Overall I believe that the idea of having the presentation at the conclusion of the season is the right way to go albeit it does require a bit of work from the hard working committee.

Special thanks to all the committee members this year. Whilst it is a small group of people they work very well together to get almost 30 teams on the paddocks each season. A number of the committee are looking to retire so I would encourage anyone who would like to assist in the Club to step up no matter how small the contribution. One of the success factors the committee has achieved is produce a policy and procedure document which outlines what needs to be done, by whom and by when.

With the advent of BBL and WBBL, time pressures on families and the increasing competition from other sports and activities summer, the game of cannot rest on its laurels and must continue to develop to be fresh and appealing for both juniors, parents and seniors. Recently Cricket Australia has released some proposed modifications to the junior game which is aimed to increase the participation, enjoyment and skill base of our future cricketers.

The Club was again supported by our friends at the Tradies and we thank them for their continued support.

Hope everyone enjoys their winter activities and look forward to seeing you back with St Pats in the 2017/2018 season.

St. Patrick’s Cricket Club remains in a strong financial position after the 2016-17 season with a season profit of around $4,500.00, this is a good result considering the double up (2 years outlay) on some of our expenses. (see below) Around $500.00 (Presentation Day expenses) still to be paid for this financial year, Premiership Caps (approx. $2,00.00) & Annual reports (approx. $1,800.00) will come into next years expenses as usual. Both income & expenditure are down this season due to a team decrease (seniors) with clothing sales costs also stabilized.

Page 6 of 71 Cricketer of the Year 2016 / 2017 - Mitchell Hewitt

It is a great honour and privilege to be able to write this report on the cricketing achievements of Mitchell Hewitt.

Mitchell has been hard toiling energetic player with a never give up attitude which he shares with all he’s teammates.

He is has been great clubman over the past 9 seasons with St Patricks Cricket club and a privilege to coach.

Mitchell has played at representative level with Sutherland for 3 seasons and was selected in the Watson Shield for the 2016/17 season.

He has amassed 83 for the club from 456 overs putting him in the top ten takers for the St Patricks club.

This season Mitchell took 12 wickets at 17.00 despite playing a majority of the season with back complaints. Mitchell has also demonstrated an ability to swing the bat in the lower order and showed that with a few lusty late innings cameo’s. Mitchell amassed 497 runs for the club over he’s 9 seasons.

Mitchell has a training and playing work ethic that is second to none, he is a courteous and honest young man who is a worthy recipient of the 2016/2017 St Patricks Cricketer of the year.

Junior Cricketer of the Year - Richard Nolan

Richard Nolan commenced playing for St Pats in the 2010/11 season in the under 8’s. Since then he has played A grade in each season in the under 10’s, under 12’s and under 14’s. He was in the premiership winning 12A team of 2013/14, and played in the final in the 10A’s in 2011/12 and 2012/13, the final of the 12A’s in 2014/15, and the final of the 14A’s in 2015/16. Not a great winning strike rate in finals but at least we got there!

Richard is a very talented all round cricketer. He has consistently opened the each season, taking on the new ball and the best bowlers in the competition week in, week out. He has always had a very good technique, great levels of concentration and puts a high price on his wicket. His stroke play has developed really well in recent years as he got a bit bigger and stronger, and his is a prize wicket for any opposition team. He has now scored 1,226 runs in his career to date for St Pats, all of them in A grade apart from 75 runs in his first season in the under 8’s.

Richard has also been a very good leg spin bowler with great control and variety. In the under 10’s and 12’s he was unplayable at times with the bounce and spin. As the batsman have now started to physically get bigger and the bounce from spinners is less of a factor, he has continued to improve his by having a flatter trajectory whilst still maintaining his control and spinning the

Page 8 of 71 ball. He bowled some great spells against good players this year and in my view is still the best leg spinner in the competition. All up he has taken 71 wickets for the club.

This year in the 14A’s was his best season with the bat. He started slowly with a duck in the first match of the season, but got going in round 2 with a score of 90 against Bangor. He finished the season with 362 runs, the 3rd most in the competition. If Richard missed out with the bat in any game we tended to struggle, and with some injuries to other players during the season there was a lot of responsibility on Richard’s shoulders to score runs and he handled that with ease.

With the ball this year he took 7 wickets, but I thought he bowled better than that and could easily have ended up with more.

Richard has also been a member of the Sutherland representative team for his age group in the Creak Shield (under 11’s), Cawsey Shield (under 12’s), Gee Shield (under 13’s) and the Moore Shield (under 14’s).

Most importantly, Richard is a fine young man with a great attitude. He is very unassuming but has a great competitive spirit and a good cricket brain. I have never heard him say a bad word about anyone and his conduct on the field is exemplary. He works hard on his game and is also fortunate to have a great father in Derek to work with him and guide him with his cricket.

I have been involved in Richard’s cricket in some capacity since the under 10’s and he is an absolute pleasure to deal with. I have really enjoyed watching his cricket progress each year and I look forward to watching him develop further in coming years. I am pleased that the St Pats committee has saw fit to award Richard with this prestigious honour. He represents our club on and off the field with distinction.

Page 9 of 71 Female Cricketer of the Year - Theresa Wilde

This has been another exceptional year for girls’ cricket at St Patrick’s’. There have been many excellent performances from individuals and some great team and club participations by the girls. This years’ winner of the Female Cricketer of the Year has performed at a consistently high level over the past few seasons and this year had another standout season, as captain of the Girls 1 team, showing great leadership throughout the year, congratulations to Theresa Wilde for her Third Female Cricketer of the Year Award.

This year Theresa played exceptionally well and broke the U17 Division 1 batting average record, scoring 281runs at an average of 93.7. The T20 format of the competition requires players to retire after facing only 25 deliveries, with girls only able to return to the crease at the fall of the last wicket, if overs permit. This style of game restricted Theresa’s ability to build long innings’ however I am sure in coming years big scores are only around the corner.

Theresa also had a more than average year bowling, with 7 wickets from her 26 overs, which included 4 maidens at an economy of 3.30 RPO. Fielding was not left behind as Theresa took 2 catches and 3 run-outs.

Theresa concentrated on the girls cricket teams this year, however made herself available to assist the SSJCA teams when required. As a reward for all her hard work and enthusiasm, Theresa was again invited to play in the Sutherland-St George Slayers U17 Brewer Shield side for which she opened the batting and was a successful spin bowler. Theresa was appointed the Captain of the SSJCA Margaret Peden representative team, which she led with distinction.

Theresa has a very bright future and we look to seeing her taking out many more awards.

Each year we aim of the team was to enjoy our cricket and improve each week. The U17 team played some very good cricket and always had fun. This year the girls realised their potential as a team, challenging themselves as a team and as individuals, playing some very good cricket along the way.

The girls competition was established to leverage off the new girls T20 Blast women’s competition. As the Thunder Girls Cricket League, the girls cricket took on a whole new level of support and success. Again the season was broken into two competitions based on the school terms and we performed well in both. We went down narrowly in the Spring Competition Final to a very strong Bankstown side. This only inspired the team to come out in the Summer competition and win all their games. Only the weather stopped a grand final victory and the girls had to settle for the minor premiership and a joint premiership after the game was rained out.

Individually all players improved throughout the season with some excellent individual performances recorded. The format of the games being T20 doesn’t allow for long batting innings (must retire after 25 deliveries) or bowling spells (max 3 overs per game), which would indicate that the performances by the girls is remarkable given these constraints. With this years’ cricket as experience the team will only become better next year.

Thanks to Alice, Ella, Maeve, Brooklyn and Rebecca for coming into the team at to assist the girls out. Well done everyone this year and good luck next season.

Caitlyn Stoffels – Caitlyn had a great year and showed why she is a valued member and respected senior player. Caitlyn bowled with plenty of determination and batted with patience while encouraging the other girls to improve and enjoy their cricket. Well Done

Elizabeth Coe – Again Elizabeth was one of our best trainers. In only her second season, Elizabeth improved with every game, however reluctant she is to have a bowl she always gives her all. Elizabeth is very respected member of the team. Well Done

Olivia Mills - was always happy and positive. A great fielder, she took some very good catches. Her bowling improved greatly and he always bowled a good line and length. His front foot and back foot shots through cover are as good as the best.

Mia Asplin – Mia is a very competitive player that always gives her best. As a slow bowler, Mia takes most of her wickets through the bounce she is able to generate. Mia’s batting greatly improved over the season with a 4 off the last ball to win a game against Summer Hill a real highlight.

Elizabeth Tully – Elizabeth had great season with continued confidence in her batting, while her bowling was fast and accurate. Well done.

Taylah Withers – Taylah had frustrating year due to breaking a finger early in the season. What looked to be a standout season was stopped due to her injury and the weather. Her class showed by taking 6 wickets in the available. Well done.

Zara Vandermaal – Again Zara was asked to open the bowling to control the runs and frustrate the batters to great success. Her batting continues to improve and as a result has been asked on occasion to open the batting. Congratulations.

Theresa Wilde – Theresa led by example with the other girls following her through the season. As captain during the season Theresa always showed her leadership capabilities on and off the field.

Thanks to all the parents for assisting this year. All the help this year has been amazing and everyone has contributed to the team’s success. A special thanks to Tiarne Hamam from the Sutherland / St George Slayers for all your match day assistance.

Les Wilde - Coach.

It really was a fantastic season for St Pats Under 8 (Blue). All the boys got along well and I was extremely pleased with the effort they all put into their training and during matches. They are a lovely group of kids and I had a great time coaching them.

Benjamin Hunt Ben had an excellent first season of cricket and was an absolute pleasure to coach. He scored his fair share of runs during the season and took a few wickets as well to go with it. The most pleasing aspects of his cricket were his commitment in the field and his willingness to listen and learn. Ben was a worthy recipient of the coach’s award for his all-round contribution to the team.

Billy McLeod Playing his second year of cricket, Billy came along in leaps and bounds in every facet of his play this season. His batting was especially impressive and he seemed to be more confident and play his best when his brother James was at the other end. Billy showed plenty of enthusiasm in the field, always chasing hard and throwing himself at any ball that came near him.

James McLeod It was another impressive season from James, following on from a series of great performances last year. He possesses a good technique and scored his fair share of runs, mostly in partnership with his little brother Billy as well as taking some valuable wickets for the team. James is also a quality wicket-keeper and always gives his all in the field.

Eamon O’Brien Eamon should very proud of himself after a superb season. He proved himself to be a genuine all- rounder, making plenty of important contributions to the team’s success. Eamon captured 10 wickets for the season, earning him a share of the bowling aggregate award. Like his mates Kobi and Jacob, Eamon went the entire season without being dismissed, always putting a high price on his wicket.

Jacob Pullen Jacob was awesome this season and I couldn’t be prouder of this little bloke. After struggling with his bowling action last season, he put in a tremendous amount of work into his bowling at training and in the backyard. His reward was 10 wickets for the season and sharing the bowling aggregate award with his good mate Eamon. Jacob also went the entire season without being dismissed which is another great achievement.

Kobi Robinson Kobi had an outstanding season, picking right up where he left off last year. He won the award, but it was his batting that really stood out. 176 runs for the season without being dismissed is a fantastic achievement that he should be very proud of. Kobi’s fielding was also brilliant again with 6 run outs – you just don’t run on this guy’s arm.

Tyler Robinson The youngest member of the team, Tyler has quite a bit of ability with bat and ball and made significant improvement over the course of the season. He struggled with his bowling for the first

Page 17 of 71 half of the season, but came back after the holiday break with a beautiful bowling action. He deserves a lot of credit for sticking at it – that type of determination will take him a long way.

Piper Vanderwert Piper was playing his first season of cricket and in terms of improvement he was right at the top of the tree. He is a quiet kid, but as the season went on he came out of his shell and put in some really good performances, especially with his bowling. I really hope he continues to play cricket because I don’t think he realises how much ability he actually has.

A big thanks to all the boys for the way they played and the behaviour and sportsmanship they exhibited throughout the season. I would also like to thank all the parents for the way they conducted themselves throughout the year. Having a team full of great kids and friendly and supportive parents made my job much more enjoyable. Cheers, Matt O’Brien – Coach Under 8’s (Blue)

It was a long and tough season for our young boys and girl. It was a season where the results may not have reflected on the park with any wins. However the improvement and wins on the field were evident in my eyes. No more than in the last game I was extremely proud of the kids.

I tried hard to give everyone an equal crack with the opportunity to bat and bowl, but in some instances this did not always work out. It was definitely a culture shock for the kids and myself playing up in the A’s. When you are out, you are out; it was some tough love. I hope most will be back next season as I feel they will be better for the experience.

Having the pleasure of meeting new parents/grandparents and obviously the kids is a wonderful experience which I cherish.

To all the parents who tirelessly helped me out at training and the game, often it is hard for parents to get there after work so it was much appreciated. Jed, Dools and Matt your efforts every Thursday were encouraging and constructive, and I thank you. It's often hard juggling 11 kids with contrasting personalities and getting them on the same page, Cricket is a tough sport to do, so thanks for the help. Hibbo your managerial exploits were shared between the twins and your older son thanks for your time. The person who had the most difficult job, to score, was the legendary Dianne Wright who never ever complained once, was always full off encouragement. She saw every wicket fall and ball bowled, we all thank you.

So over and out from me, enjoy your winter sports, play hard be safe.

Zane Cordi The best hands in the team took some absolute screamers this season Earning him the best fielder in the side. Bowled some good spells and a few good knocks always gave it 100%.

Evan Wright Confidence is a wonderful thing and Evan is a wonderful kid, he grew an extra leg in the last few games. He picked up several wickets and had the best celebration on the park With a top score of 18 shows he had what it takes, watch this space next season.

Sarah Lawler Sarah started extremely well with the bat playing some lovely cover drives in the early games. Bowled consistently very unlucky not to grab more wickets. Her cricket will get better and better, keep an eye out for this kid in a few years’ time to shine!

Riley O’brien The best cut short in the team looked good on so many occasions. His left arm bowling proved a winner, bagging a haul of wickets. He will be a lot more experienced next season. Look out cricketer of the year.

Xavier Dooley The quite achiever and our man behind the stumps who always put in, never taking a backwards step. He showed he has all the shots in the book, and with his lovely leggies is the genuine all rounder in the comp. Xav also can say in the 10s next season.

Zac Hibbins Tried hard all year and showed he can bowl well, with some good spells. Looked the goods with the bat playing some stylish knocks. He talked it up with some good encouragement on the park.

Asher Vanderwert Topped the batting aggregate and showed he has the ability with the bat in a stiff competition. Not at his best bowling this season, but still managed some good spells. Always put his body on the line in the field .

Will Grimmerson A mature young fellow who led our bowling attack. He bowled with pace taking the new ball, was extremely unlucky not to bag a lot more wickets. Played a memorable knock of 26 showing he has the talent. Will is natural leader on the park and always polite.

Aiden Morris When he is on, he is on; he bowled some ripper spells with pace and movement. Scored his highest score in the last match, proving he has what it takes with shots played all around the park.

Ashton Hibbins Told me he is a net player, but also looked the goods with several awesome displays with the bat and ball on the field. A few memorable spells of bowling showed he has the goods.

Ziggy James, Gained more confidence this season, making fine leg his own fielding position. He bowled with a lot more consistently after Xmas. Watch out when that radar is activated. Zigs is shaping up nicely with the bat, looking good for next season.

Joe Packington

Page 20 of 71 One of the nicest bowling actions in the competition and a smooth run up to go with it. Continued to improve each week, this kid loves his cricket. A mighty swing with the bat god helps us when he connects. Always tried hard in the field and will be a major player next season.

The 2016/17 season was a successful one for the boys with some fantastic cricket played by all the boys and a lot of fun had by all involved. There was a huge improvement from the boys throughout the season displaying some exciting batting, tremendous bowling and fabulous fielding. The celebrations after taking a wicket were equivalent to those in any Ashes Series.

A special thank you to our team manager, Richard Green who worked tirelessly on the sidelines organizing the boys and helping them get padded up and ready to bat as well as rotating the fielding substitutes. Our scoring team of Brad Carter, Richard Poole and Jeremy Cox were faultless with a perfect record with our team statistics each week.

Thanks to all the other parents for helping out at training, getting the boys to games on time and being a fantastic cheer squad.

This team was given a tough assignment when graded in 12A; but the way they rose to the challenge was a credit to them. Although there weren’t many wins the boys worked had at practice and the improvement showed as the season progressed. By the end of the season we were comfortably batting the 50 overs and we taking more wickets than we did in the first half. James Begg made a huge leap from 12E in the previous season into A Grade, and finished the season equal top wicket-taker in the team. His bowling is fast and accurate; so when they miss the ball he hits the stumps. James’ good throwing arm gained us several run outs. Well done James.

Brayden Carter had a great all-round season. Batting at the top of the order he had 6 innings in double figures and a top score on 32no. He bowled good medium pace and bowled better than his figures show. A reliable and enthusiastic fielder he finished the year with 4 catches.

Lawson Dykes may not have looked to be a technically correct batter but he was ‘Mr Dependable’ and would not surrender his wicket. With 5 not outs he finished the season with 75 runs at 15.0. Whether bowling medium pace or spin he nearly always chipped in with a wicket. He was comfortable taking catches in the field or as wicket-keeper.

Ben Hibbins was always seeking to be ‘in the game’. He was our second top runs scorer with 152 runs at 16.89; and although he did not get as many wickets as he deserved he was clearly the most economical bowler in the team. He also taking the ‘catch of the year’ and was a very reliable wicket-keeper.

Mitchell Hodgson had immediate impact nearly every time he bowled, and finished equal top wicket-taker. His fast bowling and good swing often gained us early wickets. With 5 catches and 2 run outs he was a great asset in the field and towards the end of the season was looking like a champion batter.

Robbie Hoffmann was in everything. He developed into a strong middle order batter who scored runs quickly; and although he did not get a lot of wickets he bowled really well against strong opponents. With 3 catches in the field and 3 as keeper he was one of our best fielders.

Spencer Kleemann had a quiet season with the ball, by his standards, but returned to top form towards the end of the season. He also showed that he can mix defence with strong hitting. I look forward to seeing Spencer really develop, now, in all aspects of the game.

Nicholas Palermo did a great job as Captain of the team and as opener was the backbone of the batting; finishing the year top scorer with 185 runs. Three scores in the 30’s and two in the 20’s are a strong result in this tough competition. With 7 wickets during the season, plus 2 catches and 3 run outs Nick made strong contributions in every part of the game. Well done Nick.

Bhavya Sharma teamed up with Nick to give us a good opening pair that did not surrender their wickets easily and gave the team many good starts. He saved his best to last with an excellent

Page 24 of 71 innings of 37no in the last match, and showed real class. Bhavya bowled good medium pace, better than the figures suggest and his fielding improved greatly during the season.

Cameron Smith had a quite season with the bat and just needs to relax and bat in a game like he does in the nets. He bowled much better than the figures suggest, always accurate and economical. He was the star fielder, saving many runs, as well as 3 catches and 2 run outs.

Elliott Wallace had a shortened season due to injury, but always troubled the batters with his spin and bounce and took valuable wickets. With a highest score of 15 he also showed strong improvement in his batting over the season.

Thank you to all the parents who assisted with weekly practice, scoring, putting boundary cones out, pre-game warmups and getting the boys there on time. Despite having a tough season, the boys had a good year and will be better cricketers as a result. Tom Croucher (Coach)

One thing that defines this team is the cheerful attitudes of the players on the field and a constant improvement in performance every round has made training and playing an enjoyable experience. The quest to improve mingled with a desire to have fun and enjoy themselves led to most

Page 25 of 71 exceeding their stats for batting and bowling from last year. This also led the team to be the most improved over the year. Unfortunately, we missed the finals by a single point and finished a very credible third in the comp including a rare outright result

Jeremy Benjamin a cheeky chap who constantly tried to do everything at a million miles an hour. When bowling, he always wants to bowl as fast as he can and batting as if he was partaking in the Big Bash league. The only one to hit a six in the division. Angus Carmalt constantly working at improving his game and always respectful and polite. Always a reliant batsman, discovered his spinning fingers for bowling late on in the season to became a very credible spinner, often to the chant of “Nice bowling Garry” from his teammates. Matthew Coe ever enthusiastic surpassed his previous season’s batting score by hitting the winning runs against the Seagulls. Archie Cook the cheeky urchin wicketkeeper constantly on the lookout to stump or run batsmen out. Did not bowl as much this season because of his wicket keeping duties but still contributed with the bat and constantly encouraged the team. Lachlan Cox demon fast bowler who is arguably the fasted bowler in the division, possibly the entire age group. Got more accurate as the season went on and highlighted by a 5 wicket haul. Liam Feldmann a real team player and enthusiastic wicketkeeper with a season highlight of taking 2 screaming catches in one game. Lachlan Jarvis always shy and quiet, but with surprising pace off a short run-up, he accounted for many a batsman who thought that they were facing a medium pacer. William Lowing Mr. Reliable of the team with bowling accurate medium pace, batting wherever he was needed and nothing getting past him in the field. Brooklyn Rullis recovered well from a broken thumb in the first match to be a extremely economical bowler and batsman who could thump the ball to the boundary with ease. Cooper Rullis turned into the consistent bowler that contributed with wickets in every game and batting to contribute runs. Ended up with a bag full of wickets. Ben Verden ever smiling and always eager to learn, Ben developed into a real all round cricketer who could be relied upon to bowl bat and field with aplomb. Jack Whittaker blessed with great hand eye co-ordination, watched hours of cricket to copy techniques and shots to be applied to his own batting and bowling. This not only resulted 3 broken balcony glass panels but also a brilliant century as well as the 2nd highest runs for the season for the entire club. Not a bad bowler and fielder either.

Although the team did not make the final, the team was very competitive throughout the whole season finishing fourth. There were some very impressive team and individual performances during the season. The team spirit and camaraderie amongst the players remained high and it was an enjoyable bunch of boys to coach.

The team won half their matches, however it could quite easily have been many more wins with increased application when batting second. The team were close to making the finals until injuries and poor weather at the end of the season made it difficult. The boys started the season as talented cricketers, and all continued to work hard during training sessions and games to further develop their skills.

After the first innings in every game, St Pats were in strong positions regardless of whether the team batted or bowled first. When the team batted first, we always posted competitive totals and our score was only chased down once. However in the four matches when the team batted second, we were unsuccessful in our run chases – even chasing modest totals. There tended to be

Page 28 of 71 a lone batsmen digging in for those run chases, but insufficient support from team mates to get the team over the line.

Particular highlights for the season were the two wins over Caringbah – the eventual premiers. After posting a strong 215 runs against Caringbah in round 3, the team bowled Caringbah out for 83 runs! And in the team’s second outing against Caringbah, we were defending a low total of 120 runs, but managed to bowl Caringbah out for 114. Two toughly fought matches where the boys really pulled together as a team to knock over the favourites.

A special thank you to the parents who assisted at trainings and on the sideline each week – your involvement made my season more manageable and the players’ season even more enjoyable.

Will Duff (c) Will did a very capable job captaining the team throughout the season, which can be a heavy burden at times with potentially varying input from coach, parents and team mates. Will has a very competitive nature and always sought to make bowling changes and fielding adjustments for the benefit of the team and increase the pressure on the opposition, including whilst trying to focus on his own wicketkeeping duties. Will took nine catches behind the stumps for the season and is also a very capable batsman, scoring a very controlled half century against Caringbah to steer the team out of trouble.

Jasper Arthur Jasper is always keen to have a go with bat or ball and further developed his cricketing skills throughout the season. He was constantly tested when opening the batting against some very quick and accurate bowling, including scoring 87 not out against Caringbah. Jasper also showed he could get quick runs when required coming in down the order with a much needed 41 against Seagulls. Jasper also spent some time with the club coach working on his bowling and is now able to get significant swing, particularly with the old ball.

Jarrod Graham One of the senior players in the team who led from the front with his opening bowling spells, mid-order batting and excellent fielding skills. Jarrod formed a formidable opening bowling combination with Angus that always put the opposition on the backfoot with early wickets. Jarrod’s 12 wickets came from consistent accurate bowling, including spells of 4 for 14 (Caringbah) and 3 for 7 (Seagulls). Jarrod also had a very good batting average of 41, including a half century against Seagulls. Coupled with Jarrod’s excellent batting and bowling results for the season, and his ongoing commitment and application during training and games, he earned the Coaches Award for the team.

Damian Kleeman Damien is a very keen cricketer with exceptional talent. He is cast from the Mitchell Johnson mould who could take any opposition apart with either bat or ball if he sets his mind to it. A very quick bowler, Damien put the fear into opposition batsmen during games and his own team mates at training. Damien also showed his prowess with the bat against Gymea Bay with a commanding 40 not out when the team were flagging and held the equal most catches for the team, including three in one match against Engadine.

Angus Morrison Angus is a terrific all-round cricketer. His opening bowling spells with Jarrod guaranteed early wickets for the team at very economical rates. Angus’s 18 wickets for the season were the most for the team and the whole grade – a magnificent effort – and all at a ridiculously low average of 10.61, including spells of 5 for 11 (Caringbah), 3 for 5 (Seagulls) and 3 for 21 (Bangor). Angus also has a very solid batting technique with top scores of 65 and 45 for the season. Angus is a very good fielder and a very safe pair of hands, taking five catches for the season. Angus also very capably captained the team with maturity when Will was injured.

James Morrison

Page 29 of 71 James is a very handy cricketer that has shown great potential. Following his consistent line and length bowling at training, James was called upon to support the front line bowlers in the middle overs during games, finding wickets and returning some very tight figures, including picking up 6 wickets overall. James showed his promise with the bat at the start of the season top scoring for the team against Engadine. James is also a handy wicketkeeper, filling in for Will when required.

Richard Nolan Richard had an excellent season and deservedly earned Junior Cricketer of the Year for the club. Richard was another player with all-round batting, bowling and fielding skills. He was the mainstay of the team’s top order scoring several half centuries, including a top score of 90 not out, and an average of 40 runs for the season, easily taking out the batting aggregate award for the team. Richard is also a very consistent leg spin bowler picking up 7 wickets and confusing many opposition batsmen.

Evan Richardson Evan had a good season, further developing both his leg spin bowling and his batting. Evan challenged batsmen with his leg spin bowling when provided opportunities, including a best of 3 for 8 against Engadine, and a very good bowling average for the season of only 15 runs per wicket. Evan showed his value with the bat when promoted up the order achieving his top score and getting the team scoring rate moving after the run rate had stalled from some very tough Caringbah bowling in round 8.

Ethan Tanner Ethan was a very consistent player with a good cricketing brain, always game aware. Ethan was a very economical bowler who could be relied upon to tie down opposition batsmen, building pressure and often leading to a wicket at the other end. Ethan has a solid batting technique and used this to achieve his top score for the season against Caringbah. Ethan was also one of the most reliable catchers in the team, taking four for the season.

Liam Van Ravenstein Liam is another handy cricketer who showed his batting skills when sharing in a significant partnership with Jarrod against Seagulls and achieving his top score for the season that day. Liam only had limited opportunities with the ball during the season, however bowled a very tight spell against Bangor in very blustery conditions when other bowlers were being buffeted by the wind.

Huon Whittingham Huon is a very enthusiastic cricketer willing to have a go at everything – even wicketkeeping when Will was injured at the start of the season. Huon can bowl quick and worried quite a few opposition batsmen when bowling accurately. Huon also has a very solid defensive batting technique that was able to withstand considerable pressure when other batsmen were losing their wickets. And to prove his batting prowess when batting higher up the order, Huon finished off the season with a magnificent 95 not out against Seagulls earning him the highest score for the team for the season and also the batting average award for the team.

St Pats 14B’s end of season report 2016/17

We had a tough start to the season against two strong teams who would eventually finish 2nd and 3rd.

In the first game of the year was against Como Jannali. Their opening bowler was very fast, but two of our first year under 14 players Sarah Heptinstall (25) and Austin Hewitt (25) played him with lots and courage and skill. At one point late on the first day we were travelling smoothly at 1 / 80. Unfortunately a batting collapse saw us eventually all out for 117. Nelson Howard also chipped in with a 13 not out. This didn’t leave a lot for Como Jannali to chase and unfortunately the game was lost.

The second game against Bangor didn’t start well either. Early wickets saw us on the back foot and we finished the first week 7 / 80. Bangor batting steadily scoring 180 after their 50 overs leaving us with 100 runs to score in 25 with 3 wickets in hand. With solid batting performances from Jed Basile (22), Sam Shepherd (20) and Luke Hodgson (35no) we got within striking distance. We just fell short being all out in the 46th over scoring 151. A few more overs may well have got us over the line.

With a positive finish against Bangor we took that form into the game against Caringbah 3. We bowled first and restricted Caringbah to 5 / 37 after their first 25 overs. A great bowling performance on a ground where you got value for your shots and we certainly showed that when it was our turn to bat. A text book batting performance saw us score an amazing 3 / 231 in our 50 overs with standout performances by Luke Jarvis (68), Jed Basile (67) and Luke Hodgson (35 no). What was truly remarkable about this performance is that we scored 100 runs in the last 10 overs. Caringbah were never able to threaten that score and we notched up our first win of the year.

Round 4 saw us playing Engadine. Once again we started poorly with Engadine storming out of the gates scoring 0 / 50 off their first 13 overs. However with a great bowling performance from Luke Jarvis (3 / 17) and Brandon Smithson (1 / 6 off 5 overs) saw Engadine restricted to just 5 / 80 after their first 25 overs. Another excellent batting performance saw us score a very respectable 9 / 183. Once again Jed Basile (50) scored his second 50 in a row, he was supported by Austin Hewitt (37), Luke Hodgson (31) and Sarah Heptinstall (18). Another great bowling performance in the second week saw us knock Engadine over for a 129.

Round 5 was against the undefeated Caringbah 2 and after two wins in a row we were feeling confident. However, every team has bad days from time to time and for us this was that day. We were knocked over for just 74 in the first inning. Xavier De Domenico top scored with 11. Caringbah then scored 149 and feeling confident declared and decided to go for an outright victory. This of course proved fruitless, with our opening batters literally smashing their bowling attack to all parts of the field. Once again we showed our potential and finished the game on a high even though it was recorded as a loss.

After 5 rounds, we had 2 wins and 3 losses and were well behind the competitions front runners. Even though we had some excellent performances in the second half of the year we couldn’t threaten the top sides. We eventually finished in a respectable 4th place in a high quality competition.

The second half of the season had many highlights and I will mention a few of them now.

In round 6 Austin Hewitt scored 51no against a quality Como Jannali attack. Batting with the tail he put his team in a winning position and nearly pulled off the victory. It was one of the most mature batting performances I’ve seen by a junior cricketer. Harry Marr also chipped in with 11.

In round 7, Koby Porter when not scaring opposition batters while bowling with his express pace, opened the batting against Bangor and scored a excellent 38 looking right at home with the bat in his hands.

Round 9 saw an inaugural T20 match sanctioned by the association. The match was a great success and all the players on both sides had a fun day. For the record we defeated Engadine 93 to 67 with Jed Basile scoring his 3rd 50 of the season. Harry Salmon next best score with 12.

Round 10 was a wash out in the second week finishing the season on a wet note. However the first week saw an excellent partnership between Sarah Heptinstall(27no) and Brandon Smithson(13) who steered us out of a tricky situation. The match ended in a draw.

The players: Jed Basile - Winner of the batting award scoring 263 runs at 29.22 which included three 50’s. Excellent keeper and bowler as well, although he is reluctant to do the latter.

Xavier De Domenico - An energetic in-swing bowler who opened the bowling on numerous occasions. The teams heart lifting his teammates with his ever present energy.

Sarah Heptinstall - Showed excellent technique while batting and capable of scoring many more runs in the future. Also an excellent fielder and has an excellent understanding of the game situation.

Austin Hewitt - Solid batter who shows great maturity constructing his innings. Bowling improved in leaps and bounds during the year. Also kept wicket when called upon to do so.

Nelson Howard - Excellent opening bowler who bowls a consistent line and length. Chipped in with some scores when batting when required. Always enthusiastic in the field.

Luke Hodgson - The all-rounder of the team. Scoring quickly when batting and a consistent out- swing bowler. Luke also won the bowling average with 16.40.

Luke Jarvis - Opened the batting against the best bowlers all year. He also scored the highest score of the year with 68. His leg spin bowling was both accurate and deceiving and could have picked up many more wickets. Luke won the coaches award for his consistent performance with both bat and ball.

Harry Marr - A bowler who is at his best when he put effort into his bowling. When he did he got the rewarded with wickets. Harry did take the most wickets again this year with 7 wickets.

Koby Porter - One of the fastest bowlers in the competition. Didn’t get the rewards he deserved beating the bat consistently. He also showed potential with the bat and has a strong arm when throwing the ball from the outfield.

Page 32 of 71 Harry Salmon - A consistent all-round player who always brought a positive attitude either at training or during the game. He always had a go at everything he was asked to do during the season.

Sam Shepherd - An excellent batter with lots of potential. He had some great performances at times and when he turned to leg spin late in the season he showed he has what it takes to bowl that discipline.

Brandon Smithson - A deceiving medium pace bowler who was hard to get away. He chipped in with a couple a good innings with bat when the team needed it.

In conclusion I would like to extend a big thank you the teams manager Duncan Howard. Duncan’s contribution each and every week was essential to the smooth running of the team. I would also like to thank all the parents who helped out with scoring or supporting the players each week.

It was a pleasure to coach this team this year and I hope you will all be back next year.

Page 33 of 71 Firstly thank you to the Parents and Team for making it a great season, Having 3 weeks of the whole season with 11 players made it a challenge. We jumped each hurdle as it was presented and really improved as a group and showed what we could do with amazing performances in each game. I am proud of you all and already look forward to next season. JED ADAMS: The HAT-TRICK hero, Jed improved every game, whether it was quick runs needed or excellent line and length bowling I knew I could count on this young man. HIGHLIGHT: Has to be the hat-trick against Caringbah NATHAN CAWLEY: Our little pocket rocket, always wanted to be in the thick of the action. Could bat anywhere in the order, Nathan wicket keeping improved every chance he got. HIGHLIGHT: The quick fire 23 against Engadine opening the batting. MARCUS FRY: The CENTURION, Marcus showed his real ability throughout the year with great performances with Bat and Ball. Marcus always tried his best and should be very proud of the season. Keep believing in your ability and the skies the limit. HIGHLIGHT: Has to be the 100* against Engadine. MELODY GLEESON: Melody joined our team after round 1 and I am glad she joined us. Melody can do it all, line and length bowling, hitting sixes of the first ball faced or taking spectacular catches. I believe Melody to be the most consistent bowler in the 14C competition. A great season mate, you should be proud. HIGHLIGHT: 5/6 against Bangor. All bowled Amazing! Aaron Hunter: Aaron would always give his all for the team, his bowling improved greatly from the start of the year and with hard work and dedication can become a good all-rounder. Aaron is a panther in the field and did a great job with the gloves keeping during the year. HIGHLIGHT: 45 against Como top scoring and helping us to the win. EMILY LAWSON: Emily is the quickest 14 year old I have seen, when pitching the ball up she was devastating. Emily was not just a bowler, she could bat, field and also appeal for anything, yes anything. It has been a great year for Emily and once she lets go with the bat she will be unstoppable. HIGHLIGHT: 12 Wickets for the year and scaring all the batsmen. ADRIAN MARTIN: Adrian is a great bowler, always economical and bowls with good pace. Adrian also has talent with the bat and needs to continue training and picking the right ball to hit. HIGHLIGHT: 2 for 10 against COMO in wet conditions. LUKE O’RIORDAN: Luke took probably the best catch of the year against Caringbah of Emily, if you blinked you missed it. But look was not only a phenomenal fielder he could do it all. Luke led us to Victory with a partnership with Aaron against Caringbah. Also picked up 7 handy wickets with his line and length bowling. Great year mate. HIGHLIGHT: 37 top score against Caringbah leading us to victory. ARMAAN SOOCH: Armaan improved every game throughout the season. He always looked dangerous with the bat and can play a magical cover drive; Armaan is a natural swing bowler that always had batsmen in trouble. Sometimes the balls were too good and batsmen could not hit them. Armaan is a true team player. HIGHLIGHT: Knocking out middle stump against Gymea round 2

Page 34 of 71 AIDAN WHITTAKER: The MR CONISTANT of the team, Batting was enormous during the year, Bowling improved finishing with 6 wickets for the year and was handy wicket keeping as well. Aidan was always wanting to improve and his hard work and effort have gotten him the rewards of a great season. HIGHLIGHT: 77 against Gymea Round 2 and 64 against Engadine Round 6 TAYLAH WITHERS: A broken hand disrupted Taylah’s season, but in the games with us you could see the potential. A great all-rounder that always had energy in the field. Taylah could bat anywhere in the order and was a like lightning between the wickets. I look forward to seeing what an uninterrupted season will bring for Taylah. HIGHLIGHT: 18 when Opening against Caringbah and her run out in Round 8 against COMO.

The season had high hopes as the team we collected saw a good mix of 16A experience with the addition of some of the 16B players and some youth from the 14A team.

The 16A competition is always a tough competition to compete in and when we look back the team scored 4 wins, 5 losses and a draw. We were unlucky at times losing to Bangor by 1 run in round 9 and suffering a brain fade against Engadine in the lead up to Xmas. However Caringbah and Seagulls were the 2 best teams in the competition (although I still believe we could beat them on our day).

Zoe Benjamin – never took a backward step playing in this competition and faced some of the quickest bowling she has had to face in her long career. Season highlight was the way she dug in against Caringbah in round 3 when Zoe faced a barrage of short bowling. With the ball she took 3 wickets including 2 of the Seagulls top order in the last round. Angus Clark – St Pats version of Steve Smith strong leader on and off the field who has the respect of his teammates. Was not available for the majority of the season due to school commitments however would play whenever he could. This was Angus last season with St Pats completing 7 seasons in total and ended up with the impressive total of 1313 runs at an average of 28.54.

Tim Fong - Handled the responsibility of opening our batting for the majority of the season scoring 147 runs for the season against the best bowlers in the Sutherland Shire. Tim was also a handy left arm bowler who time and time again broke opposition partnerships. Tim is a hard task master on himself but is always willing to learn and adjust his game to suit the conditions. Harry Hewitt – The word that comes to mind is potential!! Season highlight with the bat was the way he dug in against Caringbah round 3 to score 27 when the rest of the team collapsed and played a mature innings against Bangor in round 9 in a one dayer. Always good example of rule #2 when bowling. Look out 16A competition next year as Harry can blow it apart – potentially!

Page 36 of 71 Mitchell Hewitt – Playing in his 10th and last season with St Pats, Mitchell was our primary strike weapon with the new ball. Not many players in the 16A competition can bowl as fast as Mitchell and early in the season he amassed a lot of wickets. Back injury curtailed his bowling towards the end of the season. With the bat he has really improved over the past 2 seasons and can now be regarded as a genuine all rounder.

Kobi Marcellino - another player who was playing his 10th and last season for the juniors. Kobi was our captain in the absence of Angus and may have underbowled himself this season to ensure others got a bowl. This attitude sums up Kobi, selfless player who not matter his personal contribution put the team first and foremost.

Max McHenry – There is no one in this team that could hit a cover drive as sweet as Max. As a first year U16 Max showed his potential with the bat this season and we are very excited about what he may do next season. His glove work behind the stumps improved this year taking 13 catches and 1 stumping. However stats do not reveal the improvement in his skills with Max standing up at the stumps towards the end of the season to the medium pacers creating pressure on the batsman. Jamaine Melchior – Similar to Harry Hewitt potential potential potential. Our version of Shane Watson who like Shane found a home at the top of the order late in the season and showed that he can take any attack apart in the early overs (as long as he plays straight!!) With the ball he proved to be a very tight bowler and bowled well in partnership with Sam, tying up one end creating pressure.

Sam Mood - Sam was our front line spinner who developed his skills throughout the season and deceived many talented batsmen as he claimed 9 wickets for the season. Stubborn batsman who never failed to hold up an end when required always placing a high value on his wicket. Shaun O’Brien - The St Pats 16A version of Doug Walters (except without the smokes and beers). Hard hitting middle order batsman who despite the game position always played in a positive manner and if he received a bad ball well he tried to hit it out of the park. Another 10 year veteran who finished his junior career this season having scored over a 1,000 runs in junior cricket.

Harry Rich – An import this year from Caringbah. Harry was looking to test himself as a first year 16 opening the batting against the very best. Little was known about Harry’s other abilities and Harry himself would admit that he does not bowl. However when thrown the ball against Bangor Harry produced his first 5 for in his career. From that point on Harry was a valuable part of our attack ending up as our leading wicket taker with 15 at an average of 6.6

Jordan Willis – One of our first U16 players who has developed his game considerably this year. Being one of the tallest players in the team he was quite an imposing figure when he had the ball in his hand. Bowling in the right areas Jordan amassed 7 wickets for the season often bowling to the openers or top order. Whilst he may have had limited opportunities with the bat, placed a high value on his wicket being only dismissed 6 times this season. Will be an integral part of the 16A team next year.

At season’s end, we saw the curtain fall on 3 junior cricketing careers. Axel Smithson, Hamish Thomas & MJ Whyte are all fine young men, who do their respective families proud and who did the St Pats 16B team proud as well. They shared the captaincy around equally, until the final round when MJ was chosen by the team to lead them in Round 10 & the Grand Final.

The team finished 2nd on the competition table, defeated only by Gymea Bay (twice),which consisted of 9 second year 16s as opposed to our team with 3 second year 16s.

In the Grand Final, the team met defeat but it was a mighty performance for them to have Gymea Bay 3/1 after the first 10 minutes of the game & then bat 46.1 overs, only to fall short of the target by 35 runs. A superb effort against the premier side.

Chris Giles - What started out as being a season full of promise with the bat has been full of disappointment for this talented all-rounder. Chris would be the first to acknowledge that his concentration at the crease, both in the match and in the nets, has not been up to par. We were all hoping that he would replicate his Bradman-esque feats from 2 seasons ago, but alas, that has not been the case. On the brighter side, Chris has a safe pair of hands and can be relied upon to pouch anything that comes his way and his spin bowling has come on in leaps and bounds. But Chris, more runs please!

Page 38 of 71 Tom Mulligan - A player who relies heavily on confidence, Tom took a while to hit his straps with the bat, but in the 2nd half of the season, soon showed everyone that he could indeed hit the ball to all parts of the field. Tom needs to carry his stroke making from the nets to the game on Saturdays and once that happens, he will be a force to be reckoned with. His spin bowling suffered from too many short deliveries, but by Round 8, he was bowling a fuller length but was let down on numerous occasions by dropped catches. And his throwing arm was responsible for some fine run- outs.

Alwin Lee - Alwin continues to improve at a most impressive rate. Mainly looked upon as a fast bowler, his efforts with the bat caught everybody's attention via some meaty innings during the season, culminating with the team’s highest score of 20 in the GF. His catching ability (11 catches), made him a vital fielder and his bowling was quick & troublesome to all batsmen. He can look forward to an even bigger and better season in 2017/18 when he, in all probability, will head the bowling attack with Blake in the absence of Axel & MJ.

Blake Hurford - Blake steadily improved during 2016/17. His bowling earnt him the nickname of "The Tornado" and, one morning at Anzac #2, a disgruntled father of an opposition player was heard to mutter "that kid should be banned from playing" such was the speed and hostility that Blake generated that day. Having said that, Blake needs to work on his consistency of line and length & once he masters that, he will be almost unplayable. No slouch with the bat either, he plays in an aggressive style as Como-Jannali & Illawong-Menai found out. And his fielding was outstanding- some catches bordered on the miraculous!

Jacob Merchant - Jacob's batting prowess seemed to desert him for the majority of the season and, despite his best efforts, found the opposition bowling difficult to get on top of. Even dropping down the order, the main bowlers from the other side would always be operating whenever he arrived at the crease! But he did keep Staples & Pala at bay during Round 3 in the opening 10 overs and again in the Grand Final, against the same team, batting at #3 for a full hour, he gained everyone's respect as a result.

Josh McGrath - Severely hampered by a back/shoulder complaint for the major part of the season, Josh had to take a back seat behind the main bowlers as a result. Always a popular member of the team, his antics at our old stomping ground, Oyster Bay, had all the team in stitches as he sent down a couple of overs during Como-Jannali's 2nd innings. Josh ran hot and cold with the bat, but his enormous hit down the ground for a big boundary in the GF brought one of the biggest cheers of the day. The talent is there and I hope Josh can return injury-free in 2017/18.

Harry Cook - A reliable, if somewhat reluctant, custodian, he stopped many a wide ball from going through to the boundary and was always encouraging to his fielders and bowlers. Harry’s batting was never dull and his 34 in Round 10 (including a ramp shot to the boundary) was mainly responsible (along with the rain on day 2) for the team progressing to the GF. Other scores during the season of 18, 25 & 27 underline Harry’s ability with the bat, but he needs to become more responsible in the future by hanging around longer and turning those good starts into half centuries and, in so doing, help create big batting totals for the team.

Xavier Smaill - Xavier joined us in Round 4 and immediately stole the show via a command performance with the ball by taking 3 crucial wickets, coupled with sound catching & ground fielding skills. To prove that was no fluke, in Round 9, he again took 3 wickets and his season tally of 8 victims off 18.3 overs at a very tidy average of 6.88 was just reward for his efforts. Xavier’s chances out in the middle with the bat were limited, but he continued to improve in the nets and the experience from his first season of SSJCA competition cricket will stand him in good stead. Well done, mate!

James Gair - Finally, after all this time, James has got the monkey off his back! That monkey is the half-century, which has always beckoned this likeable cricketer but always managed to elude him. Not this season, however! Opening with MJ against the formidable might of Caringbah, he

Page 39 of 71 obtained his maiden 50 in grand style and immediately retired only to be lifted up and carried off the field by his overjoyed teammates. A deadly accurate bowler, his wicket tally (13) and bowling average (6.08) was again outstanding. He was also a dynamite ground fielder and a most dependable catcher.

Hamish Thomas - The man with the million dollar smile! I’m sure that some opposing batters were hypnotised by his smile and unwittingly give away their wicket to him!! Our No.1 spinner, Hamish finished a commendable 2nd behind Axel with 16 wickets. His effort to take a “Michelle” at Anzac #2 against the top team will long remain in the memory and Hamish was deservedly presented with the match ball on that occasion. A big hitter of the ball, particularly in the nets, he enjoyed being out in the middle with Blake for a long period of time at Oyster Bay in Round 4. The coaches award winner!

Axel Smithson - Our fast bowling spearhead, Axel invariably got the team off to a great start by dismissing either or both of the openers in just about every game. Indeed, in the GF, he cleaned bowled the dangerous Dylan Russo for a duck with the perfect inswinger! He deservedly ended up with most wickets (20) at the very nice average of 6.80. To come back to cricket after a 2 year lay- off and achieve this was an outstanding effort and one he can be particularly proud of. An impressive 21 in Round 6 highlighted his batting skills and his fielding was always sharp and reliable.

MJ White - MJ had a remarkable season. His polished technique meant that he was an automatic selection as opener and, with James, formed a mighty opening combination that thwarted most opposing fast bowlers. His best effort came in Round 5 at Gwawley East against Caringbah when he made 81 and figured in an opening stand of 141 with James. And in Round 9, an undefeated knock of 51, when none of his teammates could reach double figures, was another highlight. A more-than-useful bowler, his tally of 13 wickets placed him equal 3rd on the ‘most wickets’ list. Great work, skipper!

COACHES AWARD: Hamish Thomas

Special thanks goes out to my assistant coach, Matt Whyte, who was tireless in all aspects. Without him, we wouldn’t have got anywhere near the Grand Final. And a special thank you to Jayne Giles, our manager, who organised the Xmas & Grand Final spreads. And finally, thanks to all the parents –what a great group of people!

-Dave Mulligan

Page 47 of 71 TEAM REPORTS - Seniors 2016 / 2017

B2 – 1

The St Patrick's B2 1 side finished the year as not only Minor Premiers but ended up as the Premiers.

This team was built on everyone doing their bit and chipping in when required. Every catch, run out, wicket and run contributed to us being the benchmark of the competition.

The grand final was played in atrocious conditions at Heathcote oval with the first day being a total washout. Thanks goes to the boys who got there 2 hours early on the Sunday in a game we didn't have to win to get the ground and pitch in order for play. These boys didn't want to end the season with bad weather and were determined to finish with a win. We chased down the 112 total set with six wickets down and two overs to spare in a gruelling 33 over affair. These guys were here to play cricket and play cricket we did. Sending them in and restricting them to 112 off 33 overs in terrible conditions was where this grand final was won. This premiership was two years in the making, most of these guys played together last season in the B2s and although we didn't get the results we wanted we knew we had a strong base to build from for the following season. We added some new players to our squad which in the end was made into a premiership winning side .

It was a wonderful season and great fun with many highlights and some great victories. I'd also like to thank the St Pats B2 2 side who we played in the grand final. Mostly all young blokes they pushed us all the way and fully deserved their spot in the grand final. Some really good cricketers in that team and it was a good battle against you blokes so thanks again and hold your heads up high.

Darren Smith had a wonderful all round season. His stats do the talking especially with the bat. Abhi who was magnificent with the new ball not to mention his power batting. Tim Chora really stood up this year with the ball full credit goes to you. Nick Chalmers opening up the batting who did a fantastic job getting us off to a good solid start. Jon Hart for his efforts with bat and ball. His experience was valuable in us winning this year. Two big highlights of the season came from the same game which was the game to decide the minor premiership. The first was Darren's run out .One of the best bits of fielding you will see and Abhi's batting where he made 53 not out from his 7 over stay at the crease. I would also like to thank Warren Daley for the season without you we don't have a cricket team so thanks so much, To the guys who didn't play in the final but played during the year you guys are part of this premiership as well. Thanks go to you and everyone who stepped out onto that field for us this season.

Everyone will be back bigger and better next year and hungry for more success. ST PATS 1 B2 PREMIERS 2016/17

What an incredible result considering we almost didn’t have a Juggernauts side at the beginning of the season. With 13 members from last season signalling they wouldn’t be playing, it looked like the remaining Juggernauts may have to join other teams. Thanks to Warren Daley and the commitment of the remaining players, we brought in some new blood and rebuilt the Juggernauts. What we didn’t know at the time, was we had put together a premiership winning squad. It was a pleasure to manage the team this year with great on field assistance from Matt Parker, Paul Scott, Paul Gallagher & Anthony McDowell. It was especially pleasing to witness Chris (Panda) Young have his best season with the willow. With 4 centuries after 7 games, his stats were twice as good as the Don before Christmas. He finished the season with an average of 113.5 to become the most successful cricketer in the family & surpass the efforts of a club life member. Our bowling was our strength. We could call upon any of 13 players to take wickets. By finals time, the opposition knew we also had 4 specialist batsmen, that they would need to dismiss cheaply, to have any chance of beating us. Congratulations to the 2016/17 Juggernauts: David Scott (Capt.) Matt Burgess, Craig Campbell, Paul Dean, Cameron Gallagher, Paul Gallagher, Claude Guerrero, Anthony McDowell, Tom Millar, Andrew Monaghan, Daniel Parker, Matt Parker, Peter Ryan, Paul Scott, Rowan Simpson, Blake Thomas, Chris Young. Also thanks to Pete Blayney, Greg Jarvis, Matt McKeon & Steve Hardwick for cameo appearances.

What started as wouldn’t it be nice conversation at U16 soccer one winter day, developed over a few beers at Boyles one night turned into a premiership winning side. With a squad of 22 players of which only 5 players having any recent senior cricket experience, boasting 9 father/son/daughter combinations and some youthful enthusiasm, expectations were not high as we headed into the season.

However by end of Round 14 this team boasted 1 outright win, 10 first innings wins and only 2 losses and we found ourselves as minor premiers. This was a fortunate as we were unable to play Engadine in the final due to the weather and were crowned C1 premiers for the 2016/17 season.

To understand how this was achieved you need to understand the players who made up this team: -

Robbie Benjamin – The youngest of the 3 Benjamin in the team this year but the fastest bowler. Only played 2 games during the season but will only improve next year.

Sid Benjamin – One of our experienced players moving from the Juggernauts to play with his children. As always an absolute rock with the bat scoring 197 runs at an average of 32.83, jagged a couple of wickets too utilising rule #2 and his catch in slips wound back the clock.

Zoe Benjamin – Quite likely the first girl to play in the SSCA competition, Zoe played 4 games and contributed with bat and ball but it was her enthusiasm in the field locking down square leg which will be remembered.

Clem Fong – Returning to mens cricket after serving a 7 year suspension for over enthusiastic play, Clem has not lost any of his passion or his enthusiasm although not sure where he picked up the reverse sweep nor understood why he attempted a second and then a third when he missed the first.

Tim Fong – Seeing Tim bat with his Dad at Gymea Oval and scoring his highest score in any form of the game with a 71 was one of the season highlights. Now that Tim has finished his junior career will be interesting to see him forge a career in mens with bat and ball.

Chris Hewitt – Captain/Coach a mixture of Allan Border aka Captain Grumpy at times and Darren Lehman, gave up both the opening batting and bowling position this year for the youth of the side. Some would say when it came to the bowling Chris would bring himself on to bowl to the tail thus being the leading wicket taker for the team but it may have just been a coincidence.

Page 50 of 71 Harry Hewitt – the youngest of the 3 Hewitts enjoyed the opportunity to bat on smaller grounds which meant less chance being caught on the boundary and more chance of it going for 6. Harry played 4 games averaging a respectable 26 with the bat and 12 with the ball. Did learn that dropping a catch of his father’s bowling does come with consequences.

Mitchell Hewitt – It is undeniably now that Mitchell bats far better in the afternoon than he does in the morning. Scoring 175 runs at 29 Mitchell developed into one of our opening batsman this season. The partnership with Nick Wilde at Kareela was something special bringing the winning runs up with a 6 over the bowlers head.

Brayden Jackson – One of our junior players making the transition to senior cricket. Brayden steadily improved his bowling during the course of the season and ended up being one of our opening bowlers with James Malley. Brayden ended up with a respectable 12 wickets for the season. Whilst one of the players who would volunteer to bat at the end of the line up even number 12 a season highlight was his partnership with Matt Miller to win us the game.

Ethan Jegers – Imagine crossing a Brett Lee celebration with a Dave Warner jump when he scores a century and you have something close to what Ethan does when he gets a wicket. And with this young leg spinner we were fortunate enough to witness this celebration on 9 different occasions during this season. Underrated with the bat by his captain (just ask Ethan and he would tell you) will certainly look to next season to improve his season high score of 10.

Glenn Malley – Glenn’s catch cry was “I could have got that/done that/hit that/catch that 25 years ago”. It appeared that Glenn wanted to cash cheques his body wasn’t able to. Remember sitting next to Glenn wife first innings and all Bel wanted was for Glenn to survive one ball – he did lasting 2!. However there was no end to Glenn’s enthusiasm on and off the field. Always at training and ready to pitch in and help the team. Won bragging rights over his son James by scoring nearly double the runs James did this season.

James Malley – How good is this kid? Just ask him and he will tell you. James bowling improved out of sight claiming 18 wickets in his first season of mens and was an integral part of our success quite often opening the bowling and claiming early scalps. His batting – well it can only improve…..

Finn McNamara – Our foreign import all the way from Caringbah Cricket Club where he was finishing his junior career with the 16As. Once he finished his golf commitments Finn joined our team for the one day season and revelled in the opportunity he was given. Batting at #4 Finn scored 181 runs in 5 innings at an average of 90.5 and outstanding effort for a 15 year old. His season highlight was to bet with his idol and rep coach (apparently)

Pat McNamara – Pat signed up on the strict understanding that he was only to be called upon in an emergency and he was not going to bat or bowl. Such an emergency arose at Kareela and despite Pat’s best intentions had to go out to bat. With his son at the other end it was going to be a special moment. However the sight of his son sending back his Dad instead of a mid wicket conference, then attempting a straight drive that nearly went straight through Pat and attempted run out provided some hilarity for the team (not sure Sandra saw the funny side). Despite that Pat and Finn put on 46 for the 9th wicket with Pat contributing 4.

Matt Miller – One of the Dad’s returning to the field after an extended period of time on the sidelines. It may have been a short lived return as Matt scored 21 in round 2 including a 6 to win the game only to announce after the game it was his highest ever score with the bat and he was going to retire on a high. He came back for rounds 4, 11 and 12 but could not emulate his round 2 form- although his performances at Kareela will be remembered one for signalling to the bowler his intention to land one in the grandstand (he didn’t) the other was volunteering to watch our gear whilst we were fielding and managed a dozen in the afternoon.

Tom Miller – One of the safest pair of hands in the team unless it was his Dad bowling (to be fair his Dad wasn’t to crash hot catching of his son’s bowling either). Tom version of off spin was a turning point for the season (get it!). Troubled many teams with his action flight and deception claiming 5 wickets for the season.

Page 51 of 71 Another player who was quite content batting at 12 or 11 if required. Although with a season high 26 no this would suggest he can hold a bat.

Martin Mood – A seasoned mens cricket professional Martin showed his worth in round 2 where he scored an inspirational 50 with his first 11 scoring shots boundaries. Was limited in appearances with other cricket responsibilities but like Glenn claimed bragging rights over his son in run aggregate albeit by 7 runs.

Sam Mood – Don’t be fooled by his size whilst one of the smaller players in the team he has a huge heart and places a high value on his wicket. This was shown in round 5 where he shared a century partnership with Chris to record another win for the C1s. A handy off spinner which confused many C1 batsmen this season as he actually spins the ball – a rarity in C1 cricket.

Mick O’Brien – The elder statesman of the team however may have been our best fielder. Very astute player who provided valuable input to the younger players about strategy in cricket. Vice captain who filled in when the captain had other duties. Wasn’t afraid of making the hard calls like replacing his son with himself as keeper.

Sean O’Brien – Revelled in the mens game where if you hit hard you get rewarded. Spent majority of the season opening the batting Sean scored 167 runs with a season high of 48. With the ball not sure who was more surprised the team or Sean when he got 5 wickets for the season (rule #2 perhaps??) Will be a force in mens cricket in future years.

Les Wilde – May come to many as a surprise that despite many years involved in cricket Les played his first game of his career this year. Whilst it was a cameo performance his 2 wickets in Round 8 was a game turner although upon reflection everyone agreed he probably bowled one too many that day!

Nick Wilde – Nick missed the first 3 rounds but when he made his debut he had immediate impact. We were very fortunate to have a keeper of Nick ability in the team and with 17 catches 4 dismissals he would have been the leading keeper in the Grade. But as important as the dismissals were the lack of byes – 38 in 12 innings – some teams let this amount through in 1. With the bat as an opener copped some woeful umpiring decisions but still amassed 288 runs with the round 7 century 107 batting us to the win with Mitchell a season highlight.

These players how they have come together with the family support on the sideline is the reason we keep coming back year after year.

Notwithstanding finishing 4th on the table and missing the finals this season, it was another enjoyable season of cricket with the boys. The pre-season training sessions ensured we kicked the 2016/17 season off with a bang. It was a first up win against Caringbah Inn, including an ambitious attempt for outright points that didn’t quite go to plan. It was a blistering opening bowling spell from Chris Karykides capturing 3 for 22 followed by a superb opening batting effort by Joe Silverwood (102) and Murray Selcraig (54), with Joe remaining the team’s sole centurion for the season.

With spirits high after the first game, it wasn’t long before the inevitable top order collapse occurred in game 2 and we found ourselves behind the eight ball. Although we lost the game, special mention must go to some very determined batting from Matt Whyte (33), Greg Almond (43), Vince Ungvary (39no) and Sebastian Ungvary (9no) to bring some respectability back into the team score.

Those first two games tended to reflect the up and down season for the team. We had three wins in the first five games, but then faded towards the Christmas break. In January we started off with two wins, but then lost against Bangor Tavern which blew the team’s chances of making the semis.

The commitment to the team and entertaining banter throughout training sessions, in the dressing shed and during post-game warm-down/recovery sessions ensured we had near-full attendance from players each week. Some notable additions to the team this year were Si Jackson and Jamaine Melchior who put in some outstanding performances. Jamaine earning the batting aggregate and average awards, including top scores of 67no, 66no and 63 runs. Jamaine also picked up the bowling aggregate award with 19 wickets for the season, but was pipped by Si for the bowling average award. Si finished the season with a bowling average of 17.4, including 6 for 21 against Bangor-Barden Ridge in round 10.

Other notable performances during the season were Andrew Henderson’s impeccable, but brief, return from retirement with 4 for 13 from 6 overs in round 6. That bowling performance got the team back into the game against Bangor Tavern which eventually came down to the wire after a St Pats batting collapse. When it looked like the team were gone, Aidan Selcraig came in at no.10 and scored 10 not out with Dave Richardson (47no) to secure an unlikely victory. In round 7 against Engadine, Aaron Hooker scored a very disciplined 48 not out (unlike his usual swashbuckling see it, hit it performances). In round 8, Murray took 5 for 53 and Si hit 57 against Carringbah Inn. In round 9, Dave hit 60 not out, however the other St Pats team overhauled our score that day. In round 11 against Gymea Bay, Jamaine (63) and Murray (54) got the team off to a blistering start. In round 11, Jamaine was the standout bowler, picking up 5 for 34. In the last game of the season, following a reversal of the batting order and finding ourselves at 8 for 20 after a handful of overs and four ducks, Joe bookended his season with a half-century of 57 to bring some respectability back into our score. And dare I forget, the extraordinary eventually occurred in our round 4 win against Gymea Bay, Damo Johnstone secured his first stumping, thanks to a well- flighted from Greg.

This season also saw the previous captain of the team, Greg Almond, announce his retirement. Thanks Greg for your efforts in getting the team up and running a number of season ago and all the best with the umpiring.
