ANNUAL 2016 / 2017 REPORT Page 1 of 71 Page 2 of 71 PRESIDENT’S REPORT What an interesting season! For the first time we had a weekend called off not because of rain but because of heat only then to discover the mens final series thrown into chaos with the wet weather. We had 189 players in the junior competition, 209 senior players and a girls team making us one of the largest Clubs in the Sutherland Shire. In terms of on field performance we won 4 premierships (3 in mens and the girls summer competition) there were 13 centuries scored, 22 Michelles and 3 hat tricks. A great feature of the season were the presentation nights for the seniors at our good friends down at Boyles following the conclusion of the mens finals and the new format for the junior presentation held after the conclusion of the junior finals. Overall I believe that the idea of having the presentation at the conclusion of the season is the right way to go albeit it does require a bit of work from the hard working committee. Special thanks to all the committee members this year. Whilst it is a small group of people they work very well together to get almost 30 teams on the paddocks each season. A number of the committee are looking to retire so I would encourage anyone who would like to assist in the Club to step up no matter how small the contribution. One of the success factors the committee has achieved is produce a policy and procedure document which outlines what needs to be done, by whom and by when. With the advent of BBL and WBBL, time pressures on families and the increasing competition from other sports and activities over summer, the game of cricket cannot rest on its laurels and must continue to develop to be fresh and appealing for both juniors, parents and seniors. Recently Cricket Australia has released some proposed modifications to the junior game which is aimed to increase the participation, enjoyment and skill base of our future cricketers. The Club was again supported by our friends at the Tradies and we thank them for their continued support. Hope everyone enjoys their winter activities and look forward to seeing you back with St Pats in the 2017/2018 season. Page 3 of 71 TREASURER REPORT 2016 / 2017 St. Patrick’s Cricket Club remains in a strong financial position after the 2016-17 season with a season profit of around $4,500.00, this is a good result considering the double up (2 years outlay) on some of our expenses. (see below) Around $500.00 (Presentation Day expenses) still to be paid for this financial year, Premiership Caps (approx. $2,00.00) & Annual reports (approx. $1,800.00) will come into next years expenses as usual. Both income & expenditure are down this season due to a team decrease (seniors) with clothing sales costs also stabilized. Mitchell has been hard toiling energetic player with a never give up attitude which he shares with all he’s teammates. He is has been great clubman over the past 9 seasons with St Patricks Cricket club and a privilege to coach. Mitchell has played at representative level with Sutherland for 3 seasons and was selected in the Watson Shield for the 2016/17 season. He has amassed 83 Wickets for the club from 456 overs putting him in the top ten wicket takers for the St Patricks club. This season Mitchell took 12 wickets at 17.00 despite playing a majority of the season with back complaints. Mitchell has also demonstrated an ability to swing the bat in the lower order and showed that with a few lusty late innings cameo’s. Mitchell amassed 497 runs for the club over he’s 9 seasons. Mitchell has a training and playing work ethic that is second to none, he is a courteous and honest young man who is a worthy recipient of the 2016/2017 St Patricks Cricketer of the year. Martin Mood Page 7 of 71 Junior Cricketer of the Year - Richard Nolan Richard Nolan commenced playing for St Pats in the 2010/11 season in the under 8’s. Since then he has played A grade in each season in the under 10’s, under 12’s and under 14’s. He was in the premiership winning 12A team of 2013/14, and played in the final in the 10A’s in 2011/12 and 2012/13, the final of the 12A’s in 2014/15, and the final of the 14A’s in 2015/16. Not a great winning strike rate in finals but at least we got there! Richard is a very talented all round cricketer. He has consistently opened the batting each season, taking on the new ball and the best bowlers in the competition week in, week out. He has always had a very good technique, great levels of concentration and puts a high price on his wicket. His stroke play has developed really well in recent years as he got a bit bigger and stronger, and his is a prize wicket for any opposition team. He has now scored 1,226 runs in his career to date for St Pats, all of them in A grade apart from 75 runs in his first season in the under 8’s. Richard has also been a very good leg spin bowler with great control and variety. In the under 10’s and 12’s he was unplayable at times with the bounce and spin. As the batsman have now started to physically get bigger and the bounce from spinners is less of a factor, he has continued to improve his bowling by having a flatter trajectory whilst still maintaining his control and spinning the Page 8 of 71 ball. He bowled some great spells against good players this year and in my view is still the best leg spinner in the competition. All up he has taken 71 wickets for the club. This year in the 14A’s was his best season with the bat. He started slowly with a duck in the first match of the season, but got going in round 2 with a score of 90 not out against Bangor. He finished the season with 362 runs, the 3rd most in the competition. If Richard missed out with the bat in any game we tended to struggle, and with some injuries to other players during the season there was a lot of responsibility on Richard’s shoulders to score runs and he handled that with ease.
