  • Cultural Anthropology Through the Lens of Wikipedia: Historical Leader Networks, Gender Bias, and News-Based Sentiment
Cultural Anthropology through the Lens of Wikipedia: Historical Leader Networks, Gender Bias, and News-based Sentiment Peter A. Gloor, Joao Marcos, Patrick M. de Boer, Hauke Fuehres, Wei Lo, Keiichi Nemoto [email protected] MIT Center for Collective Intelligence Abstract In this paper we study the differences in historical World View between Western and Eastern cultures, represented through the English, the Chinese, Japanese, and German Wikipedia. In particular, we analyze the historical networks of the World’s leaders since the beginning of written history, comparing them in the different Wikipedias and assessing cultural chauvinism. We also identify the most influential female leaders of all times in the English, German, Spanish, and Portuguese Wikipedia. As an additional lens into the soul of a culture we compare top terms, sentiment, emotionality, and complexity of the English, Portuguese, Spanish, and German Wikinews. 1 Introduction Over the last ten years the Web has become a mirror of the real world (Gloor et al. 2009). More recently, the Web has also begun to influence the real world: Societal events such as the Arab spring and the Chilean student unrest have drawn a large part of their impetus from the Internet and online social networks. In the meantime, Wikipedia has become one of the top ten Web sites1, occasionally beating daily newspapers in the actuality of most recent news. Be it the resignation of German national soccer team captain Philipp Lahm, or the downing of Malaysian Airlines flight 17 in the Ukraine by a guided missile, the corresponding Wikipedia page is updated as soon as the actual event happened (Becker 2012.

  • Hbo Premieres the Third Season of Game of Thrones
HBO PREMIERES THE THIRD SEASON OF GAME OF THRONES The new season will premiere simultaneously with the United States on March 31st Miami, FL, March 18, 2013 – The battle for the Iron Throne among the families who rule the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros continues in the third season of the HBO original series, Game of Thrones. Winner of two Emmys® 2011 and six Golden Globes® 2012, the series is based on the famous fantasy books “A Song of Ice and Fire” by George R.R. Martin. HBO Latin America will premiere the third season simultaneously with the United States on March 31st. Many of the events that occurred in the first two seasons will culminate violently, with several of the main characters confronting their destinies. But new challengers for the Iron Throne rise from the most unexpected places. Characters old and new must navigate the demands of family, honor, ambition, love and – above all – survival, as the Westeros civil war rages into autumn. The Lannisters hold absolute dominion over King’s Landing after repelling Stannis Baratheon’s forces, yet Robb Stark –King of the North– still controls much of the South, having yet to lose a battle. In the Far North, Mance Rayder (new character portrayed by Ciaran Hinds) has united the wildlings into the largest army Westeros has ever seen. Only the Night’s Watch stands between him and the Seven Kingdoms. Across the Narrow Sea, Daenerys Targaryen – reunited with her three growing dragons – ventures into Slaver’s Bay in search of ships to take her home and allies to conquer it.

  • Strategic Management and Global Competition Individual Paper
STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT AND GLOBAL COMPETITION INDIVIDUAL PAPER THE WALT DISNEY COMPANY AND ITS ACQUISITION STRATEGY: PIXAR, MARVEL & LUCASFILM Li Chi Ching Jane Strategic Management and Global Competition, Fall 2016 December 1, 2016 Abstract In this paper, I will analyze the rationale behind Disney’s acquisitions of Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm and the subsequent impacts they have on Disney as a whole. Disney has always been relying on its strategic model “The Ripple Effect” for sustainable growth—through creation of a film asset, value can be infused into an array of its related entertainment assets. And a popular film acts like a wave maker in creating ripples that go down to all of Disney’s businesses—success of films are central to Disney’s overall performance. Yet, the absence of successful films from Disney starting from the late 1990s stopped the Disney model from working, resulting in a decline in profits in various business segments within Disney. In light of this problem, Disney chose the path of acquisitions— Pixar was acquired in 2006, while Marvel and Lucasfilm were acquired in 2009 and 2012 respectively. All three acquisitions have one central goal—to find Disney’s way back to the wave makers, and hence make the Disney model work again. The announcement by Disney that it would buy its partner Pixar at $7.4 billion in 2006 once shook the world—many were either having doubts on how such an acquisition would turn out or considering the valuation as too high. Most acquisitions, particularly in media, are value-destroying as opposed to value-creating.

To identify key trends in international sales of feature films generally and Canadian independent feature films specifically; 2. To provide intelligence on challenges and opportunities to increase foreign sales; 3. To identify policies, programs and initiatives to support foreign sales in other jurisdic- tions and make recommendations to ensure that Canadian initiatives are competitive. • “Voice of Ireland”. Today Tommy Is One of Ireland’S Top Entertainers with Over 6.5 Million Youtube Hits and Over 3.5 Million Album Sales Worldwide
TOMMY FLEMING BIOGRAPHY With his powerfully distinctive voice, Tommy Fleming has been described as the “Voice of Ireland”. Today Tommy is one of Ireland’s top entertainers with over 6.5 million YouTube hits and over 3.5 million album sales worldwide. The youngest of six children, Tommy was born in 1971 in Aclare, County Sligo. His natural singing ability was evident at a young age whilst participating in local talent competitions. While still at school, Tommy formed his first rock band, The Face of February, and embarked on gigging in local pubs. After leaving school Tommy joined a quartet, Jarog, gaining a legion of fans. However, despite this success, record companies weren’t exactly knocking on Tommy’s door. Then a chance encounter with renowned producer and composer Phil Coulter changed all that. In July 1993, Phil heard Tommy performing at a charity event in Westport, County Mayo. Within days Tommy was guesting with Phil and his orchestra at the Opera House (Cork), the National Concert Hall (Dublin) and The University Concert Hall (Limerick). Four months later he was playing to huge audiences across the US and Canada, culminating in two shows in the Boston Symphony Hall and the legendary Carnegie Hall in New York. Tommy’s career then took another leap forward when he was invited by Galway traditional group De Danann, to join them as lead vocalist, following in the footsteps of living legends as Mary Black, Maura O’Connell, Dolores Keane and Paul Brady. The collaboration lasted three years and introduced Tommy to a worldwide audience touring Australia, Hong Kong, China and the US.

  • The Role of Irish-Language Film in Irish National Cinema Heather
Finding a Voice: The Role of Irish-Language Film in Irish National Cinema Heather Macdougall A Thesis in the PhD Humanities Program Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Concordia University Montreal, Quebec, Canada August 2012 © Heather Macdougall, 2012 ABSTRACT Finding a Voice: The Role of Irish-Language Film in Irish National Cinema Heather Macdougall, Ph.D. Concordia University, 2012 This dissertation investigates the history of film production in the minority language of Irish Gaelic. The objective is to determine what this history reveals about the changing roles of both the national language and national cinema in Ireland. The study of Irish- language film provides an illustrative and significant example of the participation of a minority perspective within a small national cinema. It is also illustrates the potential role of cinema in language maintenance and revitalization. Research is focused on policies and practices of filmmaking, with additional consideration given to film distribution, exhibition, and reception. Furthermore, films are analysed based on the strategies used by filmmakers to integrate the traditional Irish language with the modern medium of film, as well as their motivations for doing so. Research methods included archival work, textual analysis, personal interviews, and review of scholarly, popular, and trade publications. Case studies are offered on three movements in Irish-language film. First, the Irish- language organization Gael Linn produced documentaries in the 1950s and 1960s that promoted a strongly nationalist version of Irish history while also exacerbating the view of Irish as a “private discourse” of nationalism. Second, independent filmmaker Bob Quinn operated in the Irish-speaking area of Connemara in the 1970s; his fiction films from that era situated the regional affiliations of the language within the national context.
