Atheist Identity and Ideology in Eighteenth-Century France by Lara Marie Apps A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History Department of History and Classics University of Alberta © Lara Marie Apps, 2016 ABSTRACT This dissertation examines atheist identity and ideology in eighteenth-century France up to 1776 through an analysis of numerous atheist texts, including several little- known clandestine works and the more familiar books of Jean Meslier, Julien Offray de La Mettrie and the Baron d’Holbach. It departs from most previous historiography on pre-modern atheism by fusing intellectual- and cultural-historical approaches; most importantly, it incorporates gender analysis in the interpretation of atheist texts. This research demonstrates the importance of the eighteenth century to our understanding of the continuities and ruptures in the development of atheism. For eighteenth-century atheists, writing and sharing their views was a way of resisting repression, practicing atheism within a hostile environment, and changing the social imaginary by intervening in a discourse that dehumanized them. Further, the atheist texts express a sense of identity by defining atheists as different from other members of society in several specific ways, including intellectual and moral superiority. This identity re-humanized atheists but also excluded women and the common people, on the grounds that they were not capable of understanding virtuous atheism. Atheists thus claimed for themselves the positions of wise fathers and leaders. Finally, some atheist writers presented ideological visions of ideal societies, based on the core concepts of the materiality of the world, the necessity of organizing societies rationally in accordance with nature’s laws, and the subordination of individuality to the common good and social or moral order. -

Natania Meeker’s Voluptuous Philosophy: Literary Materialism in the French Enlightenment aims to be many things at once: a new account of eighteenth-century French materialist philosophy; an exploration of subjectivity, considered in relation to reading, pleasure, and the process of becoming “enlightened”; a fresh perspective on such famous (and sometimes infamous) materialist authors as Julien Offray de La Mettrie, Jean-Baptiste de Boyer d’Argens, Denis Diderot, and Donatien François Alphonse de Sade; and a contribution to the theory of embodiment advanced by literary critics like Judith Butler, Daniel Tiffany, and Dalia Judovitz.[1] Meeker’s touchstone throughout the book is the classical thinker Lucretius--a predictable enough choice, given her focus on materialism, but one that Meeker makes for a very specific and original purpose: to read the eighteenth-century Lucretian legacy from the perspective of literature. Thus, rather than focusing on how materialist philosophes responded to Lucretius’s atomism, atheism, or hedonism, Meeker undertakes to examine whether or not they accepted his homology between matter and poetry, his conviction that the truth-value of materialist philosophy hangs upon “the perception of matter in its figural dimensions,” the “materialization of the poetic trope in the voluptuous bodily responses of readers to the texts that they are moved to enjoy,” and the recognition of voluptuous pleasure as a form of cognition (pp. -

ABSTRACT: The aim of this chapter is to analyse the political uses ofthe categorization of eighteenth-century French materialism as mechan- istic and reductionist. Regardless of the current or outdated character of these materialisms, their rejection and the narratives that endorsed such judgments appear as partly ideological. Using several examples, this chapter will examine how this reductionist image of eighteenth- century French materialism was formed in the nineteenth century. It aims to show that the quarrels about materialism focused at that time on the question of a society’s dominant beliefs. Seeking coherence in the secular’s semantic excess, they have often elided distinctions between these meanings or sought a more basic concept of the secular that can contain all of its senses (Asad 2003; Taylor 2007; see Weir 2015). Numerous scholars have observed strong similarities between secularism and Protestantism (Fessenden 2007; Modern 2011; Yelle 2013; see McCrary and Wheatley 2017), at times echoing a Christian theological tradition that has long been anti-secular (Taylor 2007; Gregory 2012; see Reynolds 2016). Unlike this anti-secular tradition, the strongest version of the critique of secularism is a critique of the conditions that produce a distinction between secular and religious and a critique of the ways that empire benefits from this distinction. Overcoming a tidy separation between secularism and religion requires fracturing both and reassembling them in new ways that allow messy life to exceed governance (Hurd 2015, 122- 27). Remembering Karl Marx’s secularism provides an opportunity to recover the differences within secularism and its difference from Christianity, but also its odd similarities with religion. This recovery can help refine the critique of secularism and preserve some important tools for improving material conditions. -

This dissertation is a study of the materialist current of the French Enlightenment. Far from assuming that early modern materialism constituted a homogenous philosophical current, my dissertation applies the materialist method of critique to the category of “materialism” itself. I argue that “Materialism” was invented in the 18th century, and it had little to do with the simple affirmation of the primacy of matter or the reductionist “one –substance monism”, as its detractors at the time wanted the public to believe. I show that the adjective “materialist” was coined in the context of a social transformation of philosophy (a social reconfiguration of philosophical activity with the rise of the bourgeois public sphere) and in the midst of an ideological crisis of French absolutism. I argue that religious and political authorities labeled a set of public philosophical interventions that advocated for a new conception of public philosophy, an experimental and critical one, as “materialists”. -

Abstract: This paper is part of a larger study on ‘Poverty of Communism: The Game of Filling in the Marxian Blanks’. As Lenin (1913) remarked, the philosophy of Marxism is materialism. To be more specific, Marxism is both a world view in general and a view of the society and its progress in particular; that world view is dialectical materialism (a term devised by Plekhanov, the Russian Marxist, and first used by him in an article published in 1891) and its application to the study of social history is the materialist conception of history or historical materialism, as called by Engels. Thus, as Stalin wrote in 1938, dialectical materialism is the world outlook of the Marxist-Leninist party; it is called dialectical materialism because its approach to the phenomena of nature, its method of studying and apprehending them, is dialectical, while its interpretation of the phenomena of nature, its conception of these phenomena, its theory, is materialistic. The present chapter seeks to discuss the development of philosophy in general that served as the cradle of Marxism.
