Tools and equipment Superglue Knife Tweezers File

A

Assemble the grating strips to form a grating , as before.

B

Cut the assembled grating square into two 6 x 3 blocks and two 9 x 6 blocks.

121 SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step ™

C

Following the same process as in Stage 29, cut lengths of the 2 x 3mm wooden strip to create the edging for the grating pieces, as shown.

D

Glue the two joined 6 x 3 grids over the hole behind the foremast hole.

E

Glue one of the 9 x 6 grids over the aft hole on the main deck.

122 SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step ™

F

Glue the second 9 x 6mm grid over the hole, forward of the one fitted in Step J, page 116.

G

Cut two lengths of 2 x 3mm strip to fit either side of the hole on the main deck (arrowed).

H

Cut another two lengths to fit forward and aft of the two lengths from the previous step, aligning them both at the ends (red lines).

123 SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step ™

I

Follow the process shown in Steps G-H to fit lengths of 2 x 3mm wooden strip around the two holes on the quarterdeck.

J

Use a file to smooth the inner edges of the wooden strips so that they are flush with the holes of the deck.

A

Use either a half-round file or wrapped around a cylinder to smooth the area below the transom to a curve.

B

Cut in half the wooden strips received in Stage 29. Glue one of these strips to the lowest point of the curve, in line with the projecting wood (dotted red line).

125 SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step ™

C

Nail the strip into place at the three points indicated by the arrows.

D

Continue placing strips around the curve. The two outer rows of nails will need to move in so that they are in line with the projecting wood (dotted red lines).

E

Trim the excess off the strips, indicated by the red lines. Look at the following two steps, which clearly show the angle of the cut.

126 SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step ™

F

Sand the strips (arrowed) so they are in line with the reinforcement on either side of the shaded red projection.

G

Sand the sides of the strips so that they are in line with the reinforcements (dotted red line).

H

Retrieve the guns and carriages of the previous stages. Paint the carriages red, avoiding the wheels.

127 SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step ™

I

Apply a small drop of glue onto the two side bars indicated by the red arrows.

J

Place the two side bars in the semi- circular recesses at the top of the gun carriage. Repeat this process for the other cannons. Keep all the cannons to one side until they are needed for fitting.

K

Your parts Stage 33 Wooden strips 2 x 5 x 250mm

Tools and equipment Sanding block Files

A

Before planking the hull, you will need to sand the ribs, and to do this more easily you may want to turn the model upside down. To prevent the sides from being damaged, you should place the model on a block of wood or similar, covered in a cloth or soft material. Start sanding at the bow, moving from bow to stern.

B

Sanding the ribs is required to prepare their sides, eliminating any rough edges and increasing the contact area for the planks. Be sure not to sand too hard or too much, though, as this can distort the shape of the ribs.

129 SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step ™

C

File along the gun port strips to remove the heads of the nails, so that they do not obstruct the placement of the wooden strips and to align the edges of the strips, creating a better surface.

D

To check that the sanding was successful, take a 2 x 5mm wooden strip and hold it lightly against the ribs. Starting from the top (keel), slide the wooden strip down the sides of the ribs and make sure that it is flush with all the frames.

E

This picture shows how the bow should appear after sanding.

130 SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step ™

F

Continue along the ribs, sanding the middle section of the hull, which requires less shaping than the bow. Make sure that the false keel reinforcements (arrowed) are the same height as the ribs and not the false keel. Adjust if necessary.

G

As with the bow, shape the last few ribs as well as the false keel reinforcements at the stern (red lines). Be careful not to distort the false keel when shaping these areas.

H

As you did with the bow, slide a wooden strip from the keel down the ribs, following the red arrows.

131 SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step ™

I

File the wooden strip at the stern until it is flush with the reinforcement.

J

This photo shows the appearance of the astern ribs after shaping.

Your parts Stage 34 Nails Grating strips Wooden strips 2 x 3 x 300mm Cannons Carriages Tools and equipment Superglue PVA Pin pusher Saw

A

Assemble the two cannons in the same way as in Stage 32.

B

Soak a 2 x 5 x 250mm wooden strip in hot water to soften it and make it more pliable. Apply PVA glue to the bottom of the gun port strip from the fifth to the first ribs.

133 SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step ™

C

Place one strip from the middle of the fifth rib, extending past the first rib at the other end, halfway over the bottom of the gun port strip.

D

This photo shows where to position the 2 x 5mm wooden strip in greater detail. You may want to use a quick-drying glue to secure this end.

E

Begin to secure the wooden strip with nails, as shown.

134 SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step ™

F

The strip must be flush with the curve of the ribs. Fix the nails carefully around the curved areas of the hull, so that the strip doesn’t lift off the ribs.

G

When dry, cut the excess off the strip that extends past Rib 1.

H

Following the same process, apply some glue to the bottom of the gun port strip from Rib 5 to Rib 11. Then fit another 2 x 5mm wooden strip from halfway across Rib 5 with the other end extending past Rib 11.

135 SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step ™

I

Fix the wooden strip into place on the ribs with nails.

J

Cut away any excess of the strip that extends past Rib 11. Repeat Steps B-J to fit the corresponding strips onto the other side of the hull.

K

The photo shows how the assembly should look at this stage. Keep any left- over material, as it will be used later.

Your parts Stage 35 Wooden strips 2 x 5 x 250mm

Tools and equipment PVA wood glue Knife

A

Glue another strip above the previous one, from just aft of the seventh gun port to extending slightly past Rib 1.

B

Glue another strip abaft of the one fitted in the previous step, ending just past the fourteenth gun port.

137 SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step ™

C

Place the next strip above the previous one, aligning it with the edge of the twelfth gun port and angling it down to meet the lowest strip, creating a wedge- shaped gap.

D

Before fitting any more strips, cut away any parts of those already placed that cover the gun ports.

E

Place the next strip forward of the strip from Step C, then one above it, as shown. Before proceeding with the following steps, repeat Steps A-E for the port side of the hull.

138 SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step ™

F

Place two more strips on the starboard side, forward of those placed in Step E, with the lower one extending past Rib 1.

G

Place another three strips at the bow, as indicated by the arrows. Cut away any strips covering the gun ports before proceeding.

H

Complete the rows of wooden strips, abaft of the strips placed in the previous step. You will need to use two strips per row (arrowed).

139 SANTISIMA TRINIDAD: Step by Step ™

I

Place three more strips to complete another row. Cut away the excess so that it is flush with Rib 1.

J

Trim the strips at the stern so that the lower ones are in line with Rib 11 and the upper ones are in line with the curved strips placed in Stage 32. Repeat these steps for the other side of the hull.

K

The photo shows how the assembly should look at this stage. Keep any left- over material, as it will be used later.
