Stewart, S.J., Medal for Excellence in Teaching In 1983, the Alumni Association, with the cooperation of the Faculty Union and the Students' Representative Council, established the Reverend William A. Stewart, S.J., Medal for Excellence in Teaching. This award is open to faculty members who have made an extraordinary contribution to the education of Saint Mary's students through teaching in the University's tradition of quality undergraduate education. Nominations are invited from alumni, students, and faculty members. This medal is presented at Convocation together with a cheque for $1,000. Previous winners of this prestigious award are:

This year's winner is Dr. Janet Baker of the Department of English. After completing her BA and MA degrees in English at Queen's University, Dr. Baker began teaching at Saint Mary's University in 1967. Four years later, she took a leave of absence to complete her doctorate at Dalhousie University before returning to Saint Mary's in 1974. Dr. Baker was promoted to Associate Professor in 1978.
Dr. Baker's scholarly interests are primarily in the area of Canadian literature, where she has done extensive teaching and research, and has taken a leading role in the development of several new courses over the years. As well, she has taught and published in a number of other areas including Children's literature and Renaissance literature.
From the very beginning of her teaching career, Dr. Baker has been noted for her devotion to students. A 1970 article in the student newspaper, The Journal, entitled "The value of the University experience," spoke of Dr. Baker's "empathy and common sense" qualities that have been appreciated by her students for over two decades. Her student evaluations are consistently among the highest in the University; students beseige her for advice, letters of reference, and opportunities for individual discussion. To all of which, Dr. Baker is unfailingly accommodating, welcoming the opportunity to enhance the quality of students' experience at Saint Mary's. Her nomination for the Reverend William A. Stewart, S.J., Medal for Teaching came from students past and present as an expression of gratitude to a teacher who, in their words, "has been a source of inspiration for literally thousands of students." Honorary Degree Recipients At this Spring Convocation, Saint Mary's University will award honorary degrees to Cheung Tsang Chung, Rick Hansen, Ron Joyce, Jane Shaw Law and Louise Lore.
Cheung Tsang Chung Honorary Doctor of Commerce Mr. Cheung left China for Hong Kong in 1954 and completed his high school education there before coming to Canada to study at Saint Mary's. He received a B.Sc. and B.Comm. from Saint Mary's in 1963 and 1964, then returned to Singapore to join his family's international import and export group, the See Hoy Chan Group. He spent three years trading in rice and sugar with Burma, the Philippines and Thailand and also represented the family group in a joint venture with the Singapore government to set up the only sugar refinery in Singapore. He also drafted specifications for sugar as a national product for the government. In 1967 he set up a refrigerated storage and fishing company. During the early 80s, Mr. Cheung spent five years reorganizing and restructuring his family's group of businesses. He now manages the Teo Cheow Seng group of companies in Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong, Singapore Laces and Labels Pte Ltd, Cheung Brothers Company and See Hoy Chan Ddn Bhd (Penang), which deal in motor cars, real estate, textiles, commodities, engineering works and general trading. Mr. Cheung's daughter, Kuan-Yin (Karen), is a student in the Faculty of Commerce at Saint Mary's.

Honorary Doctor of Civil Law Rick Hansen, who became paraplegic as a result of a truck accident in 1973, became a Canadian hero during his epic 1985-87 "Man in Motion" tour, when he travelled around the world in his wheelchair to raise awareness of the potential of people with disabilities. The $20 million raised by the tour now forms a trust fund which sponsors research into disabilities. Prior to the tour, he won 19 international wheelchair marathons and was three times World Wheelchair Marathon Champion. He first came to Saint Mary's in 1982 for the Pan-Am Wheelchair Games and again in 1983 as a member of Canada's team in the Gold Cup of men's wheelchair basketball. He visited our campus in 1986 towards the end of the "Man in Motion" tour, and visited the Atlantic Centre of Support for Disabled Students in 1990. Rick Hansen has a Bachelor of Physical Education from the University of British Columbia and a number of honorary doctorates. He is a Companion of the Order of Canada and also the Order of British Columbia, and was made a Freeman of the City of Vancouver in 1987. In 1987 he initiated National Access Awareness Week, and in 1989 was appointed to plan and implement the Disability Resource Centre at UBC. He serves on a number of international bodies dedicated to the integration of people with disabilities and continues to be an inspiring role model for Canadians with and without disabilities. Ron V. Joyce, O.C. Honorary Doctor of Commerce Ron Joyce was born in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia. In 1951, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy, where he specialized in the communications field. In 1956, he moved to Hamilton, Ontario, where he joined the Hamilton Police Force while continuing to serve in the RCN Reserves. By 1965, his entrepreneurial spirit had come to the fore and he took over the Tim Horton donut shop in Hamilton. In 1967, after he had opened two further shops, he and Tim Horton became full partners in the business. Upon Tim Horton's death in February, 1974, Mr. Joyce became the sole owner of the chain, which then had 40 stores. It has now grown to over 600 stores, with locations in every province in Canada. Shortly after Tim Horton's death, Ron Joyce set up the Tim Horton Children's Foundation, which operates summer camps for underprivileged children in Ontario, Alberta, and Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia. Ron Joyce serves on the Board of Directors of Lumsden Brothers and Sobeys. In 1989, he was honoured for his success in the food service industry by being made a Fellow of the Hostelry Institute. He has also received the Gary Wright Humanitarian Award for contributions to community life and was the 1992 Honorary Chairman of the Ireland Fund, which sets up educational and community programs to promote peace and harmony in Ireland. He was recently named to the Order of Canada.
Jane Shaw Law Honorary Doctor of Letters Jane Shaw grew up on the eastern seaboard of the United States, surrounded by painters, including her mother. After a year at the Portland School of Fine Arts, she began her studies at Quebec's Ecole des Beaux Arts, where she met her husband, Anthony Law. They were married in 1942 when he was in the navy, and she taught high school art classes in New Hampshire until he returned from the war in 1945. The Laws moved to Halifax in 1951. Jane Shaw's artistic career has spanned many media, but watercolour is her favourite medium. She has painted still lifes, figure studies, street scenes and landscapes and seascapes, but the bulk of her output is flowers, and her garden has been a continuing source of inspiration. Jane Shaw's association with Saint Mary's began when her husband was appointed the first Curator of the Art Gallery in 1968. Since then she has been a true friend of the University in many ways. She taught classes in watercolours in the 70s and assisted her husband with scenery for the Drama Society, as well as with the redesign of the old Theatre Auditorium. She is a 17-year member of the Faculty Women's Association, serving as its President for five years. Exhibitions of Jane Shaw's work were held at the University Art Gallery in 1970, 1977 and 1987, and her paintings are always a highlight of the annual Faculty, Alumni, Student and Staff Art Exhibition. The catalogue for the 1987 exhibition states, "Shaw has no ideologies, she simply paints what she loves... She loves personal things and she loves flowers." Louise Lore Honorary Doctor of Letters Louise Lore is a journalist who has accomplished much positive social action through the medium of television and is also committed to promoting and improving public broadcasting. After graduating with a B.A. from the University of Western Ontario and a Dip.Ed. from Ontario College of Education, she travelled and taught high school before joining the CBC in 1967 as a researcher for the current affairs series, The Way It Is. Next assigned to the new Man Alive series, she produced and directed over 50 documentaries on religious, ethical and human rights issues during her 21 years with this program. Man Alive is one of the most successful prime time documentaries in the history of the CBC and has received over 50 awards. Louise Lore used her talent and her faith to fulfil the program's mandate to celebrate those Canadians who inspire us to build a sense of community locally, nationally and internationally. Under her direction, the program helps to build bridges of understanding to the dispossessed and the powerless and examines moral and ethical dilemmas at a time when all values are in question. She is currently responsible for the upcoming documentary series, God's Dominion, which explores the role of religion in the lives of Canadians. Louise Lore represents Canada on the board of the International Public Television Conference. She also serves as a founding board member of a National Film Board program to assist women of color and women of First Nations to become film and television makers of their own stories. She has served on the board of Christian Women in the Media. In 1991, she received the Toronto Sun's Woman on the Move Award. Retirements The following faculty members are retiring from Saint Mary's University, after devoting a total of 224 years to serving the University.
Dr. William Bridgeo (Chemistry) Dr. Bridgeo received a B.Sc. from St. Francis Xavier University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Ottawa. He headed the Technical Services Division of the Nova Scotia Research Foundation (NSRF) from 1953 until 1961, then spent two years doing research at New York State University. In 1963 he joined the Chemistry Department at Saint Mary's but also continued to serve as Head of the Chemistry Division of NSRF until 1969. In 1967, he became the University's first Dean of Science. In 1971, he created a company designed to put his research to commercial use. While Dean of Science, Dr. Bridgeo served as Chairman of the Atlantic Provinces Inter-University Committee on the Sciences (APICS). He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemists and the Chemical Institute of Canada and a member of the International Association on Water Pollution Research, the International Association on Water Quality, and the Canadian Association on Water Pollution Research and Control (CAWPRC). He organized an international conference in Yellowknife on water pollution research in the Arctic, while President of CAWPRC, which honoured him for his services in 1988. Dr. Bridgeo's own water research centred largely on drinking water and he acted as a consultant with regard to drinking water supplies. Through his company, Bridco Values Limited, he developed strontium ceramic glazes, conducted research into the synthesis of strontium chemicals, provided a chemical analysis service and organized conferences and workshops.
Dr. John Chadwick-Jones (Psychology) Dr. Chadwick-Jones came to Saint Mary's in 1974. He has a B.A. and M.A. from Oxford University and a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Wales. In 1981, the University of Wales recognized his research contributions by the award of a higher doctorate, a D.Sc. He began his research career in applied psychology at Cardiff University in the late 1960s, then moved into the theoretical side of psychology, writing a widely-acclaimed book on social exchange theory. In the 1970s, Dr. Chadwick-Jones turned his attention to worker absenteeism, making a significant research advance by the publication of a book in 1982. Most recently he has studied the social psychology of baboons, collaborating with Dr. Barbara Smuts of the University of Michigan in the analysis of African field studies. In 1990, he received the President's Award for Research Excellence for his research in three distinct areas of social psychology. These are organizational behaviour, social behaviour and non-human primate behaviour. At the time, then Dean of Science, Dr. William Jones, said, "With an international reputation established through a continuous record of publication ... he is recognized as one of the leading psychologists in Canada." He has written a total of five books and more than 60 journal articles and contributions to books and holds the Fellowships of the Canadian, American and British psychological societies. His research has been generously supported over the years by Canada Labour, Health and Welfare Canada, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. Dr. Frank Dougherty (Accounting) Dr. Dougherty started work as a clerk with Sherwin-Williams Co. of Canada at the age of 17 and had 18 years experience in private industry before becoming an academic. He had already reached the rank of accountant with Conant Paints Ltd. before he received his first degree, a B.Comm. from Sir George Williams University (now Concordia), to which he subsequently added a C.A. from McGill University, an M.Sc. from Clarkson College of Technology, and a B.A. and Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University. His academic honours included a Samuel Bronfman Foundation Fellowship and a Quebec Department of Education graduate scholarship. He worked for Monsanto Chemicals, Touche, Ross Bailey and Smart, and Leviton Manufacturing of Canada Limited and was controller and secretary-treasurer of the Sperry group of companies when he became Associate Professor of Accounting at Concordia University in 1966. He held this position until he joined Saint Mary's as an Associate Professor in 1978. He was promoted to Full Professor in 1983 and served as Chair of the Accounting Department from 1985 to 1988. Dr. Dougherty is a member of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants, the Order of Chartered Accountants of Quebec, the Canadian Association of Administrative Sciences, the American Accounting Association and the Professional Corporation of Industrial Accountants of Quebec.
Dr. Lilian Falk (English) Dr. Falk came to teach at Saint Mary's in 1967. She earned a B.A., an M.A. and a Teachers Diploma from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Harvard University with a thesis in Old English. Before joining Saint Mary's, she taught English in secondary schools in Jerusalem and in Halifax. At Saint Mary's, she introduced a course in the history of the English Language which has become an integral part of the curriculum. She also introduced and taught advanced courses in grammar, historical development of English prose style, and Canadian English. In addition, she taught introductory courses in English Literature and Composition, served as Acting Chairperson of the English Department for one year, Coordinator of the Linguistics Minor for two years, and Archivist of the Atlantic Provinces Linguistic Association for five years. Having developed a love of languages and literature early in life, Dr. Falk has been very happy in the teaching profession. She intends to devote the time afforded by early retirement to several projects involving literary and linguistic studies.
Dr. James Jaquith (Anthropology) Dr. Jaquith studied at George Pepperdine College and the University of California at Los Angeles before completing his B.A. at Mexico City College in 1956. He was awarded an M.A. from Indiana University in 1962 where he completed his Ph.D. in 1969. Dr. Jaquith began his university teaching career in the United States, coming to Saint Mary's University in 1974 as Associate Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Anthropology. He was promoted to Full Professor in 1980. Dr. Jaquith retires from Saint Mary's University after nineteen years of service. Dr. Rowland Marshall (Philosophy) Dr. Marshall was awarded his B.A. in 1949 from the University of Western Ontario, where he completed his M.A. (Philosophy) in 1951. He was awarded his Ph.D. from the University of Ottawa in 1972. Dr. Marshall was a member of the Royal Canadian Navy (Regular Force) from 1950 to 1959; as well, he was a member of the Active Reserves from 1960 to 1977 and Supplemental Reserves from 1978 to 1992. Coming to Saint Mary's in 1962 as a member of the Philosophy Department, Dr. Marshall has served as its Chairperson for several terms, as well as serving on the University Senate. Dr. Marshall retires from Saint Mary's University after thirty-one years of service.
Dr. Arthur P. Monahan (Philosophy) Dr. Monahan was awarded his B.A. from the University of Toronto in 1949; he continued his studies there, completing his M.A. in 1950 and his PhD in 1953. In addition he holds a Licentiate from the Pontifical Institute of Medieval Studies, Toronto. He began teaching at Saint Mary's as an Associate Professor of Philosophy in 1961 and was promoted to Full Professor in 1970. He has served several terms as Chairperson of the Philosophy Department and has been a member of the University Senate and Board of Governors. Dr. Monahan is retiring after thirty-two years of service to Saint Mary's University.
Dr. Dangety S. Murty (Physics) Dr. Murty came to Saint Mary's in 1963 with an M.A. from Madras University, and an M.Sc. and a D.Sc. from Andhra University, India. He is a Chartered Engineer (London) and Fellow of the Institute of Electrical Engineers (London). He taught at Andhra University and Texas Southern University before joining Saint Mary's and has held numerous posts as a visiting scientist (U.S., England, and Australia) and received the Colombo Plan Scholarship from England). He was the founding Chairperson of the Physics Department at Saint Mary's and has held this position three times, for a total of 16 years. He was promoted to the rank of Professor in 1969. Dr. Murty's research fields include Ionosphere Physics, MossbaHer Effect and Low Energy Nuclear Physics. He has published 26 research papers and is the author of four books on Physics. Dr. Murty is listed in a number of international "Men of Science" publications. Dr. Murty served on many academic committees at Saint Mary's, and was one of the organizers of the Quarter Century Club. His many community activities include serving as convenor of Sathya Sai Baba Centre of Halifax and President of the Sri Venkateswara Temple Society of Halifax and Dartmouth. He has participated as a speaker at a number of symposiums on Science and Religion. Over the 41 years of his career, Dr. Murty has enjoyed teaching Physics, which he considers a dynamic and demanding field essential to all students of the Natural Sciences and Engineering. An Explanation for our Guests Monday, 10 May 1993, marks a special event in the history of the University, namely the Convocation of the largest graduating class in its 191-year history.
In the early years of Saint Mary's, major events such as Convocation were always held off campus. Once the University moved to its present campus in 1951, it was possible to hold Convocation on campus until 1986, when the number of potential graduates required a larger facility than was available; hence the choice of the Metro Centre, which provided a very suitable and comfortable setting for this major event. The Convocation Committee continues to strive to bring as much Santamarian flavour as possible to this event, thus ensuring that Graduation is truly in the Saint Mary's tradition.
History of Saint Mary's University Saint Mary's University was founded in 1802 to provide opportunities for higher learning to young Catholic men. Its founder, the Reverend Edmund Burke, had meagre resources to work with, but, on later being named Bishop with responsibility for Nova Scotia, he continued to support the college as essential to the development of the Catholic community. In 1841, the Nova Scotia House of Assembly gave formal recognition of its academic role. Its legal status was confirmed in perpetuity by enactment in 1852.
In 1913, the Christian Brothers of Ireland, a teaching order, were invited by the Archdiocese of Halifax to direct the college and its academic program. During the ensuing years, Saint Mary's University became more widely known for the quality of its undergraduate teaching and continued to develop new instructional programs most notably within its Faculty of Commerce. In 1940, the Upper Canada Province of The Society of Jesus was invited to succeed the Christian Brothers as administrators and teachers in the University, and for thirty years until the enactment in 1970 of the new act of incorporation, the college remained under Jesuit supervision. The long-standing emphasis on liberal arts and commerce was extended to include new programs in science, engineering, and teacher education. Extension courses became an important part of the University's commitment to an active educational role in the community.
Currently there are in excess of 8,700 students enrolled at Saint Mary's, approximately 5,200 of whom are full-time. The remainder are studying on a part-time basis both on campus and at such extension centres as Truro, Bridgewater, Sydney, Dartmouth, Lower Sackville, and Charlottetown. Convocation Ceremony
(a) The Procession The ceremony starts with the procession — the entering of the members of Convocation, beginning with the Marshall of Convocation and the students who will be presented with degrees, diplomas, and certificates during the service. As the students fill up the chairs on the main body of the Metro Centre floor, they will give the impression that today's ceremony really is, as convocations traditionally were, a meeting of the whole University. (The word "convocation" means "calling-together".) Indeed, this Centre could not hold all the individuals who are part of Saint Mary's — the students, the professors, the administration, the staff, and a large number of alumni around the world — not to mention their families and friends.
Next in the procession are special guests, the Members of Faculty, the Board of Governors, and the Deans of the Faculties.
Next are honourary degree recipients. In addition to "earned" degrees awarded to students who have studied and met the usual requirements, the University confers several "honourary" degrees. These go to people who have been designated by the University's Board of Governors and Senate as deserving special honour, and they will receive hoods symbolizing the degrees. These hoods are trimmed with specially designated colours. The people receiving this honour are introduced during the Convocation ceremony and a brief text is read to explain why they deserve it. Details are found in the latter portion of this programme.
The final members of the academic procession are the Vice President (Academic and Research), the President, and the Chancellor of the University.
Many will have colourful gowns and hoods of institutions from across Canada, the United States, and many nations of the world.
(b) The Ceremonial Mace The ceremonial mace, which is carried by the Marshal of Convocation at the head of the academic procession, was presented to Saint Mary's in April 1980 and used for the first time at the 1980 Convocation. It symbolizes the University's authority to grant degrees. It was made and presented to the University by Maritime Command in recognition of Saint Mary's alumni killed in both world wars and also serving members of the Canadian Armed Forces who have been students at the University.
The mace is made of oak with a cast brass crown and brass plates carrying traditional ceremonial engravings. The plates represent the contribution to Saint Mary's by the Jesuit Fathers, the Christian Brothers of Ireland, the Archdiocese of Halifax, the LaSalle Christian Brothers, the Lay Teachers, and the Armed Forces. (c) Degrees and Diplomas Awarded with Distinctions At Saint Mary's University in the general undergraduate degree and diploma programmes, academic distinctions are awarded to successful candidates on the basis of the following quality point averages calculated on the highest grades attained in twelve courses taken at Saint Mary's, including the last ten in the student's programme in the case of the pass degree and, in the case of honours, seventeen courses (or equivalent) including the last fifteen courses in a student's degree programme. In the case of the Diploma in Engineering, the best ten courses are selected. There are no distinctions awarded in the Bachelor of Education programme, nor in graduate and certificate programmes.

Traditions form a very important component of a University. A number of these are associated with Convocation, including the four described in the following paragraphs.
(a) University Crest Hanging above the centre of the stage is a copy of the University crest, designed in the 1940s by the Reverend Daniel Fogarty, S.J., then Dean of Education. Each symbol in the crest has a significance relevant to the various phases and history of the University
On the outer portion of the crest, the name and location of the University are inscribed in Latin and, in Roman numerals (1841), the date the University received its charter authorizing it to grant degrees.
The book shown above the shield represents learning and knowledge. The inscription on the page of the book is in Latin — "Age Quod Agis". This is the motto of the University which exhorts all those connected with the University to strive to do their best in everything that they do. This quotation is from the Irish Christian Brothers and symbolizes their contribution to the development of the institution.
The upper part of the shield has the official seal of the Jesuits with I.H.S. being the Latin initials for Christ's name. Below these initials are the three nails which represent the Crucifixion, and surrounding these is the Crown of Thorns.
The two crowns represent a dual loyalty — to the then Dominion of Canada and to the British Commonwealth. Below these crowns is the thistle, which stands for Nova Scotia's Scottish heritage. (b) The Hooding Ceremony As you will observe, all the graduates and members of the academic procession are attired in the basic elements of formal academic dress, which at Saint Mary's follows the general guidelines established at Oxford and Cambridge Universities in England. Formal attire consists of academic robe, hood and mortar board, although at Saint Mary's the latter is limited to Master's graduates only. The academic dress worn by each participant depends upon the academic level attained. There is a special attire for the Bachelor level candidates, for the Master's, and the Doctorate. While tradition has dictated the style or cut of the academic attire, each university, for the most part, will amend certain details of the attire to suit its own particular tastes and traditions.
The academic hood which each graduate is wearing symbolizes the degree into which the student will be or has been admitted. The hood itself traces its tradition back to the Middle Ages, when its prototype, with a cowl-like appendage and tail, was used to cover the shoulders in the cold and draughty medieval buildings or in inclement weather. Gradually this garment was modified, and the hood assumed an academic rather than functional significance. The hood has two basic elements: the trim on the outer edge and an inner satin lining. Each hood has its outer edge trimmed with a colour to indicate a particular faculty and degree: white symbolizes Arts; gold, Science; grey, Commerce; and white with pale blue, Education. The hood for the Master's candidates is essentially the same as the Bachelor's hood except that the trim is usually an inch or two wider. All the Bachelor level hoods are lined with satin in the colours of the university granting the degree. Hence at Saint Mary's the hood is lined with maroon satin with a white chevron. The Master's hood at Saint Mary's is lined with maroon satin only to give it added distinction from the Bachelor's.
A symbolic hooding ceremony has become a traditional feature of all Convocations at Saint Mary's.
(c) Flags on the Stage Each year Saint Mary's has a number of non-Canadians in its student body. The flags which you see displayed on the stage for Convocation are from some of the countries from which these students come, not necessarily graduating students, but those in any year of study. This international aspect of the Saint Mary's University community is a feature of justifiable pride which contributes markedly to the growth and understanding of both Canadian and non-Canadian students. Also included in the University's permanent collection of flags is one from the International Year of the Disabled signifying the University's permanent commitment to people with disabilities. (d) Graduation Alumni Pins The Alumni Association of Saint Mary's University has generously provided an Alumni Pin to each member of the Spring Class of 1993. This is a new tradition which started with the 1992 Spring Convocation. Graduates are encouraged to wear theirs with pride and to consider becoming an active member of the Association.

The University's symbols and traditions reflect its roots as well as looking to its future, and the ritual of Convocation looks to the roots of the University as well as being a beginning for the students who now enter a new stage in their lives. Indeed, both the symbols and the Convocation look back far beyond the beginning of this University to the centuries of academic life in western civilization. Today the University dresses in clothes which are symbolic, not functional, and goes through the 600-year-old ritual of a convocation for the conferment of degrees, diplomas, and certificates.
