The program has met with a tremendous response and has its sights set on doing even more in the community, starting with events like the extremely successful Steel City Amazing Race.

Members of the Marauder football team were some of the most active participants in McMaster Athletes Care, making weekly visits to recreation centres and schools, volunteering to supervise field trips to see varsity events on campus, and helping out with special events designed to engage kids in the program and expose them to educational opportunities they may not have been aware of.

Of course, winning the Vanier Cup added a special shine to some of the visits, as the football team wasn’t shy about taking the trophy on tour through local schools, and other locations like the McMaster Children’s Hospital, where fans of all ages wanted to catch a glimpse of CIS football’s big prize. Michael DiCroce poses with the Vanier Cup at McMaster’s Shoot for the Cure night.

For Marauder Aram Eisho, being part of the program was an incredibly rewarding experience. “Some of these kids really need a role model and I remember when I was in their shoes,” said the Hamilton native. “It helps the kids so much and really opens their eyes to some good possibilities. It’s also a really amazing feeling when one of them asks you for an autograph or gives you a big hug, just for being there.”

“I love it when their faces light up because you gave them a high five.”

Winning a national championship was certainly a terrific accomplishment for the football Marauders, but in 2012 the team also received another accolade when it was presented with the Joyce Wignall Award, which is bestowed annually to the McMaster varsity team that best displays the qualities of teamwork, loyalty, and community involvement. Along with the McMaster Athletes Care activities, Marauder football players got involved in several other events like: the Run, the Climb for Cancer, and the Shoot for the Cure initiative.

“For our team, it’s a priority to try and give back to the people that give to you,” said Eisho. “We talk about being a family, and by giving something back we are letting everyone know they can be part of our
