“SCIENCE EMPOWERS US. THE HUMANITIES TEACH US TO USE THAT POWER WISELY,” SAYS CANADIAN BUSINESS HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE AND WESTERN ALUMNUS, JOSEPH ROTMAN (BA’57).

The more successful Rotman became in business, the more he felt he was falling back on the principles and disciplines of critical thinking he learned in philosophy at Western. This led him to make a $4-million donation to Western in 2008, creating the Rotman Institute of Philosophy.

“I am convinced we have the opportunity at Western to do something unique,” says Rotman. “We can have significant impact by helping define the scope of the problems that society faces because of the rapid changes in science and technology, as well as to ensure we advance questions that are not being asked. We must look at science and technology through the lens of philosophy.”

While the Rotman Institute officially opened in October, faculty, staff and students have Dr. Cecil and Linda Rorabeck been busy building momentum for the last two years. THE RORABECKS HAVE BEEN MAKING QUIET BUT GENEROUS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THEIR COMMUNITY FOR MANY YEARS – THROUGH PHILANTHROPY, VOLUNTEER A key early step was the establishment of an International Advisory Committee comprised of some of the world’s leading scientists and philosophers. HIS WESTERN EDUCATION OPENED DOORS FOR HIM, AND NOW HE’S OPENING DOORS FOR OTHERS.

This year, Kevin Comeau (LLB’82) added another $25,000 donation to continue supporting the Kevin J. Comeau Continuing Scholarship he created in the Faculty of Law in 2003. This new gift brings his total giving to almost $200,000.

WESTERN EARTH SCIENCES STUDENTS HAVE ACCESS TO LEADING EDUCATORS AND NOW STATE-OF-THE-ART SOFTWARE THAT WILL GIVE THEM THE SKILLS THEY NEED TO THRIVE WHEN THEY GRADUATE.

Thanks to a US$6.2-million donation from Roxar Software Solutions, Western’s future resource geoscientists have access to 3-D visualization software that is as much of a breakthrough for geotechnical exploration as MRI is for diagnostic medicine. This will allow students to gain insight into the evolution of the planet as well as the practical application of finding and assessing petroleum and natural gas deposits.

GRACE AND LILLIAN BAKER MEDICAL RESEARCH FUND

SISTERS GRACE AND LILLIAN BAKER WERE BOTH TEACHERS WHO SHARED AS OF OCTOBER 31, 2010 A LIFELONG PASSION FOR EDUCATION. CAMPAIGN PROGRESS 2010/2011

Through their estate gift to Foundation Western, the Grace and Lillian Baker Medical Research Fund has been established in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. This unrestricted endowed fund will generate approximately $40,000 a year in perpetuity to support medical research, at the Dean’s discretion.

Kathy Coleman, second cousin to the sisters, whose grandfather was the brother of Grace and Lillian’s mother, says she remembers the sisters as loving and gentle women, who both had a thirst for knowledge and a keen interest in reading, nature and politics. Grace Baker Neither sister married or had children. They saw their young relatives and students as their children. Their modest lifestyle allowed them to contribute to several organizations over the years, including Western. Lillian passed away in 1999 at 88, while Grace continued to live in their London home until shortly before her death in 2008, at 91. Lillian Baker

Grace and Lillian did not share why they decided to give to medical research. The family surmises it was because the sisters suffered the loss of their father at an early age, and mourned the death of a young brother, and wanted to keep others from this experience. They also might have thought because dentistry was a part of the school, they were honouring their two uncles who were dentists.

“Higher education is revered in our family, so Grace and Lillian’s support of Western is extremely appropriate,” Coleman says. “They both believed that supporting the younger generation was vital to improving society.”
