June 12, 2021...............................................Home W, 4-1 *12 Most Recent Matchups The AppleSox look to get their first sweep of 2021 when they host the Bellingham Bells tonight at 5:35 at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium. The AppleSox took the first two games against the Bells to come into tonight's game with a season-best three-game winning streak. The Sox got a bounce-back pitching performance from lefty Reid Rasmussen. He became the third sox starter to toss five innings. Rasmussen gave up one run one three hits with the lone run scoring on a third inning blast by Daniel Gernon. The CWU southpaw struck out one and didn't walk any before exiting in the sixth with some shoulder tightness on his throwing arm. Reliever Jeffrey Heinrich came in for his debut and faced a bases-loaded, one-out situation after an error, dropped 3rd strike and a walk. Heinrich managed to strike out cleanup hitter Dylan Joyce on 3 pitches before fanning 1B Pierce Leavengood to end the threat. The Sox got three more shutout innings from Jasper Nelson, Alex Brady and Rance Pittman to close out the 4-1 victory. Pittman earned his first save with a scoreless ninth. At the plate, the Sox didn't score in the first three innings but struck with two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. Rece Stapp tied the game with an RBI groundout in the fourth before Bells' starter Zack Simon threw a wild pitch that brought Garrett Cutting home for the 2-1 Sox lead. Tino Bethancourt skied a two- run home run over the left-field wall one inning later for his second long ball of the summer. Last night's win marked Wenatchee's fifth consecutive against Bellingham at home. It also marked the Bells' fourth straight loss, after losing the final two games of their home series against Yakima Valley prior to the start of this series. The Bells' three-run loss gave them a 1-4 record when they fail to score over four runs. 2021 Scoring By Inning 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Total Opponents 04 07 03 10 07 02 02 02 01 38 AppleSox 07 01 03 06 03 03 02 07 00 32 2 Tonight's AppleSox Starter Record When Overall.................................5-3 Sophomore, #4 1st Half.................................5-3 Hunter Salinas Col. NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS NEWSLETTER (Volume 43, No. 7, December 10, 2004) NCBWA President’s Message By NCBWA President Mike Montoro Though the holiday and bowl seasons are here upon us, we hope the recently-released preseason NCBWA All-America team will bring some warm thoughts of spring to you. Our deepest sympathies go to the family and friends of late NCBWA member Matt Smith, who died while on a basketball road trip to Mississippi State on Dec. 3. The South Alabama SID was a frequent contributor and one of the top young SIDs in the nation. His passing at this time of the year strikes home particularly hard to those who knew or worked with Matt. Don’t forget to email any news items to Bo Carter ([email protected]) for the newsletter, and thanks for staying attuned to some upcoming developments which can affect the NCBWA and college baseball as a whole. There are some exciting possibilities and some possible new awards on the horizon, so be on the watch for nomination forms, releases and other forthcoming information. In the meantime, here’s wishing you the happiest of holiday seasons (and bowls for many of you), safe travels, and good cheer for the end of 2004 and the start of what promises to be an outstanding year in 2005. Mike Montoro NCBWA President NCBWA Member Matt Smith of South Alabama Dies Suddenly Matt Smith, media relations director for the University of South Alabama, died unexpectedly on Dec. 3, 2004, of an apparent heart attack in Starkville, Miss., while traveling with the USA basketball team.
