Entertaining Places. ello! Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Dawn Parker and I am the new executive editor of Ascent Magazine, as well as the new Managing HDirector, Market Development at PCI. My background includes serving as the Region Director for PCI of Illinois and Wisconsin; where I honed my knowledge of precast, working in the economic development field with multiple targeted industries, as well as spending several years in the construction industry. But, enough about me, let’s talk about the rest of the team here at Ascent. Producing Dawn Parker, MBA Executive Editor a magazine takes the work of many and couldn’t come to fruition without the [email protected] contributions of my esteemed colleagues. First, I want to thank and welcome Jim Lewis, the new Editor of Ascent magazine and the Manager, Architectural Services at PCI, his architectural background made a huge contribution to this first issue that we produced together. I see an exciting future for Ascent based on our collaborative partnership. Additionally, on the team is another new face, Brenda Banks, who is our editorial assistant and the new Marketing Assistant at PCI. Are you seeing a theme here…New. Fresh. Visionary. Our purpose here at Ascent magazine is to bring you a variety of building projects that you can explore, design and build with precast concrete. As you will notice in this issue, we are exploring an assortment of entertainment venues. We all have our favorites; sports, players, teams, getting lost in the beauty of a theatrical production, or bowling on league night. Imagine enjoying your favorite form of entertainment in a setting that is unique, built to last, comfortable and embodies all of the qualities of a high performance structure; versatility, efficiency and resiliency. You will find all of this portrayed in the following pages. If you noticed the “built to last” in that last paragraph and how that applies to a precast concrete structure, it also applies to the rest of the team here at Ascent Magazine. Craig Shutt, who has been with Ascent for many years, as our primary writer and managing editor and Tressa Park who handles the Ascent layout, graphics and publishing, both are an integral part of our magazine. Our Ascent team looks forward to delivering you, a magazine that is relevant, exciting and allows you to DREAM of what you can achieve with precast concrete.

sports “ In terms of creativity … one should take an attitude not that architects and engineers sit on different mounds taking care of their respective problems, but rather that it is one complementary group working together in creating a building.” – Dr. Lev Zetlin sports On the cover: In 1958, Lev Zetlin – founder of the firm that became Thornton Tomasetti – developed a visionary design for “Tomorrow’s Arena” that was discussed in Engineering News Record, Time and This Week magazines and in the New York Herald Tribune. With a capacity of 200,000, the innovative concept features a suspension-tensioned translucent roof and multi-deck parking ramps integrated into the underside of a concrete stadium bowl, close to the stands. It minimizes the use of land and material while enhancing the spectator experience. In 2013, our computational designers used Rhino Grasshopper and Karamba to create an interactive parametric model of the design. Today, Thornton Tomasetti continues to design sports facilities in the creative spirit Contents of Lev Zetlin. We apply groundbreaking technological tools in innovative ways to help clients and project partners make the future of sports design a reality. • Architecture 2030 Fact Sheet 1 Architecture 2030 Fact Sheet
Fact Sheet July 19, 2010 Because the Building Sector is key to addressing energy independence and climate change, the success of an energy or climate bill hinges on setting realistic targets for achieving dramatic energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions in the Building Sector. Set correctly, these targets can provide a reasonable and beneficial pace for change that will achieve the reductions necessary within the timeline called for by the scientific community. The following facts make clear what these targets need to be and show conclusively that they are achievable: 1. In 2008, the Building Sector was responsible for: • 50.1% of total annual U.S. energy consumption [1], • 49.1% of total annual U.S. GHG emissions [1], • 74.5% of total annual U.S. electricity consumption [2], and • most of the projected 7.34 QBtu increase in U.S. electricity consumption by 2030 [3]. 2. To constrain global warming within 2 °C, the IPCC projects that developed countries must cut their emissions 25% to 40% below 1990 levels by 2020 and 80% to 95% below 1990 levels by 2050, according to the best available scientific analyses. 3. In order to meet the reductions established by the scientific community, President Obama has called for an 83% reduction of U.S. GHG emissions below 2005 levels by 2050, which equates to approximately 80% below 1990 levels. 4. California, with one of the most aggressive and effective building energy codes in the country, Title 24, uses less than half the electricity and, on average, 44% less building energy consumption per capita when compared to states without a statewide building energy code (see Appendix D).

July 25, 2012 Acting Administrator Daniel Tangherlini U.S. General Services Administration One Constitution Square 1275 First Street, NE Washington, DC 20417 Dear Acting Administrator Tangherlini, The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) is to be commended for its leadership in improving energy and environmental performance across its federal building portfolio. The recently released sustainability and energy “scorecard” by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) demonstrates just how successful GSA has been at reducing costs, improving efficiency and eliminating waste. • GSA earned the highest rating in all categories in the 2011 sustainability scorecard released from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). • GSA reduced emissions from federal buildings more than 20 percent compared with 2008. That incredible reduction led all federal agencies. • GSA is ahead of schedule in reducing its potable water and electricity use. These efforts are paying off in real terms. According to the OMB, investments in efficiency over the last four years are expected to save $18 billion in energy costs over the life of the projects. In an effort to continue this success, GSA is evaluating the building rating tools at its disposal, as required by the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. LEED is the most widely used high‐performance building rating system in the United States. The private sector uses LEED to both verify and communicate the quality of high performance buildings. If GSA, as the “landlord of the federal government,” were to require or use something else, it would add cost to the building and leasing process across the building industry.

The project was challenged by poor subsurface conditions‚ numerous existing site utilities‚ proximity to the existing stadium and racetrack‚ and the need to construct the proposed stadium while operating the existing Giants Stadium and utility infrastructure that serves the Meadowlands Sports Complex. The expertise of several Langan disciplines was called upon to facilitate design and construction of the stadium and maintain the project schedule. Langan provided geotechnical‚ site/civil‚ environmental‚ traffic engineering‚ surveying‚ permitting‚ and landscape architecture services for MetLife Stadium - working with the owners‚ design-build contractor‚ and a diverse team of architects and designers. BARCLAYS CENTER AT ATLANTIC YARDS Location: Brooklyn‚ NY Client: Forest City Ratner Companies Architect: SHoP Architects‚ AECOM Ellerbe Becket Partner: Thornton Tomasetti‚ WSP Services: Geotechnical‚ Earthquake/Seismic‚ OVERVIEW The Atlantic Yards project consists of the redevelopment of six city blocks in the Prospect Heights section of Brooklyn‚ NY and includes the Barclays Center‚ an entertainment center and new home arena of the Brooklyn Nets. Langan served as the geotechnical engineer for the arena and high-rise structures at the Vanderbilt Yard. In addition‚ Langan's site-specific seismic study resulted in a favorable seismic designation‚ thus avoiding unnecessary seismic detailing and connections‚ and more importantly‚ foundation ties - which saved millions of dollars.
