Overcoming the predation costs of bilaterally symmetrical colouration MSc project by Benito Wainwright A dissertation submitted to the University of Bristol in accordance with the requirements for award of the degree of MSc Biology in the Faculty of Biological Sciences. Word Count: 16,916 1 Abstract For camouflaged prey animals which benefit from remaining undetected by predators, increased conspicuousness due to bilaterally symmetrical colouration is costly. The ubiquity of symmetrical body patterns in nature is assumed to be due to tight genetic and developmental constraints. Given these evolutionary restrictions, we investigated how animals might have evolved to optimise their surface colouration in order to reduce the predation cost of bilaterally symmetrical colouration. One way of doing this is by placing discrete, high contrast markings away from the axis of symmetry (or midline). Artificial camouflaged prey with symmetry placed at different distances from the axis were used in both laboratory visual search tasks with humans and field survival experiments with wild avian predators. By measuring response time (Experiment 1) and predation rate (Experiment 2), I showed that for targets that were symmetrical only near their midline, detectability was the same as for targets that were symmetrical all over their surface. Prey were significantly less conspicuous when symmetry was placed outside of this ‘critical zone’. To see whether living animals have evolved as predicted from the trends suggested by these experiments, the saliency of features at different distances from the midline of the cryptically coloured forewings from 36 Lepidopteran species was measured. Measures of both absolute salience and relative to wing area demonstrated that salience is indeed greatest away from the ‘critical zone’ near the axis of symmetry. My results suggest similarities in the mechanisms of bilateral symmetry detection by mammalian and avian predators. They also suggest that evolution has resulted in pattern elements being positioned in such a way that the detectability cost imposed by symmetry is reduced.     Portsmouth Number List 2019 The RYA Portsmouth Yardstick Scheme is provided to enable clubs to allow boats of different classes to race against each other fairly. The RYA actively encourages clubs to adjust handicaps where classes are either under or over performing compared to the number being used. The Portsmouth Yardstick list combines the Portsmouth numbers with class configuration and the total number of races returned to the RYA in the annual return. This additional data has been provided to help clubs achieve the stated aims of the Portsmouth Yardstick system and make adjustments to Portsmouth Numbers where necessary. Clubs using the PN list should be aware that the list is based on the typical performance of each boat across a variety of clubs and locations. Experimental numbers are based on fewer returns and are to be used as a guide for clubs to allocate as a starting number before reviewing and adjusting where necessary. The list of experimental Portsmouth Numbers will be periodically reviewed by the RYA and is based on data received via PY Online. The breeding population in Scotland – in largely semi-natural open habitat – shows significant increase whereas there has been a significant decline in England. Here breeding numbers have remained stable or increased in semi-natural habitats, while woodland and farmland populations have plummeted. As a brood parasitic bird with a long-distance annual migration, the cuckoo has a unique network of relationships to songbird „hosts‟, prey and habitat; and a disconnection between adult and nestling ecology due to lack of parental care. This thesis investigated the role of breeding ground land-use factors in driving cuckoo population decline. In the first chapter information was synthesised from the literature on potential threats and environmental impacts facing cuckoo populations, which also highlighted knowledge gaps and a basis for hypotheses in later chapters.

As a result of published and unpublished revisionary work, literature compi­ lation and expeditions to the Beringian area, 98 species of the Noctuidae are listed as Holarctic and grouped according to their taxonomic and distributional history. Of the 44 species considered to be "naturall y" Holarctic before this study, 27 (61 %) are confirmed as Holarctic; 16 species are added on account of range extensions and 29 because of changes in their taxonomic status; 17 taxa are deleted from the Holarctic list. This brings the total of the group to 72 species. Thirteen species are considered to be introduced by man from Europe, a further eight to have been transported by man in the subtropical areas, and five migrant species, three of them of Neotropical origin, may have been assisted by man. The m~jority of the "naturally" Holarctic species are associated with tundra habitats. The species of dry tundra are frequently endemic to Beringia. In the taiga zone, most Holarctic connections consist of Palaearctic/ Nearctic species pairs. The proportion ofHolarctic species decreases from 100 % in the High Arctic to between 40 and 75 % in Beringia and the northern taiga zone, and from between 10 and 20 % in Newfoundland and Finland to between 2 and 4 % in southern Ontario, Central Europe, Spain and Primorye.

Studies on nocturnal Lepidoptera were carried out on the Laukėnai raised bog and the adjacent wet forest in 2001. Species composition and abundance were evaluated and compared. The species richness was much higher in the forest than at the bog. The core of each lepidopteran community was composed of 22 species with an abundance of higher than 1.0% of the total catch. Tyrpho- philous Hypenodes humidalis (22.0% of all individuals) and Nola aerugula (13.0%) were the dominant species in the raised bog community, while tyrphoneutral Pelosia muscerda (13.6%) and Eilema griseola (8.3%) were the most abundant species at the forest site. Five tyrphobiotic and nine tyrphophilous species made up 43.4% of the total catch on the bog, and three and seven species, respectively, at the forest site, where they made up 9.2% of all individuals. 59% of lepidopteran species recorded on the bog and 36% at the forest site were represented by less than five individuals. The species compositions of these communities showed a weak similarity. Habitat preferences of the tyrphobiontic and tyrphophilous species and dispersal of some of the species between the habi- tats are discussed. INTRODUCTION (1996).
