Annual Paul Guest Rowing Luncheon with members of the gold medal winning ‘oarsome foursome’ and coach noel donaldson An outstanding line-up of special guests has secured the use of the Main Dining Room for this event on Friday 28 November. The event precedes the ‘Head of the Yarra’ held the following Saturday, thus ensuring an audience of Australian rowing icons.
“Oarsome Foursome” coach Noel Donaldson has agreed to fly over from New Zealand (where he is currently coach) for the occasion and will address the Club on the gold medal win. With that, it is proposed there will be vignettes from each of the crew members, James Tomkins, Nick Green, and Mike The ‘Oarsome Foursome’ Barcelona 1992 McKay. Olympic and Commonwealth Gold Medallist Peter The Oarsome Foursome will speak on this gold medal win Antonie will also add to the high calibre line-up. as well as their other acheivements in the rowing world.
The Oarsome Foursome, a rowing coxless four crew who competed with a clear lineage between 1990 and 2012 - won two Olympic gold and one silver medal, two world championships as a coxless four and an additional world championship titles in a coxed boat. Members of the Oarsome Foursome when split into pairs placed 1st and 2nd in the 1998 World Championships and won gold at the 2008 Olympics.
In lead-up races before the 1992 Olympics the crew’s dominance was challenge by fours from the Netherlands and the USA but after a seat swap by Donaldson between Cooper and Green and the adoption of the new short “cleaver” blades they won gold at Barcelona 1992. It is this group of stellar rowers who will be present at the lunch, a treat for any rowing enthusiast.
