FRESH BEER Catch up on the latest UK Craft Beer releases.

BREWER’S CORNER What’s going on in the world of Craft Beer?

TAPROOM REVIEW We visit the Alexandra Hotel in Derby.

TWICB PODCAST Rob is joined by Dave & Dave from Fierce Beer Co.

70 ISSUE SEVENTY JUNE 28th 2021 ISSUE 70 - 28 JUNE 2021

The TWICB Team were busy last week visiting some brewer friends at various taprooms around the country. We took the op- portunity to record mini podcast updates with Pentrich Brewing Co, Three Hills Brewing and Little Earth Project. These should be available on Fridays and won’t interfere with our usual full length podcasts on Tuesdays. It was great to see these guys and share a beer (or two) with them.

There’s talk about a vaccine passport to allow those with two covid jabs to be able to travel abroad without quarantine restrictions. If this happens we hope to relauch our Grand Beer Tours later in the year. Don’t forget to keep checking the promotional pages in our Newsletters for details, and hopefully we’ll see you on one of our awesome trips.

The Alexandra Hotel, 203 Siddals Rd, Derby DE1 2QE

This was a pilgrimage nine-months in the planning! When I interview Joe from Pen- trich on our podcast in Oct 2020, he convinced me that I really needed to experience Pentrich Pales and IPAs on cask, but the long winter of COVID #3 got in the way.

The venue that Joe mentioned was the Alexandra Hotel (“The Alex” for short) in central Derby. This week Steve and I arranged to meet up with Joe in the Alex to record an update to our Pentrich pod- cast episode, and we had an amazing evening!

The Alex is a traditional British pub with rooms, located less than two minutes walk from Derby station. It has two bars which would each seat perhaps 25 people in non-COVID times. Out the back of the pub is a large paved courtyard with at least a dozen large bench tables, as well as an eclectic mix of railway station seating.

The Alex is renowned for the quality of their cellar skills, and they serve seven cask beers and three Craft keg beers, in addition to a traditional mix of pub drinks. We had coordinated our visit with Joe to ensure that they had fresh casks of the latest two Pentrich New England Pales, Aztec Smile and Flat Circle, and we were very glad that we did.

18 Both beers were absolutely amazing! If you are a fan of NEIPAs and American Pales, and you haven’t yet sampled Pentrich on cask, a visit to the Alex should be very high on your beer to-do list.

The Alex is Joe’s local, and he told us that he basically regards them as his quality control reference point. Joe knows that his beers will always be presented in perfect condition at The Alex, so he makes sure they are pouring his beers as often as possible.

One piece of advice is to check their Taplist on Untappd before you set out to visit The Alex. The quality of Pentrich on cask is well-known in Derby, and so a new cask will rarely last longer than a day or so, before it is all gone!

PATREON ANNOUNCEMENT Discover the benefits of membership

When we launched This Week in Craft Beer in January 2020, we were blissfully unaware of what lay ahead of us! Considering the obstacles, we have all faced, we are proud of what we managed to accomplish in our first year.

However, we have lots more that we want to do in 2021! In order to fund these activities and to enable our Community to get more involved with the creative process at TWICB, we have launched a Patreon Membership Programme.

Full details of how you can get involved starting at less than the cost of a half-decent can of beer per month, can be found at patreon.com/thisweekincraftbeer.

Don't worry, our weekly Newsletter and Podcast will continue to be FREE FOR EVERYONE! The Patreon Membership offers access to range of brand new TWICB Products and Services. Please check it out and let us know what you think?! www.thisweekincraft.beer/patreon

Q. Why are you starting to charge for things that we have enjoyed for free all this year? A. We aren't! The weekly Newsletter and weekly Brewer-interview Podcast will continue to be free to everyone. Patreon will enable us to offer brand-new additional products and services to Members.

Q. What's this about Members getting involved with TWICB? A. We have been amazed and delighted with the amount of engagement and feedback we have received during our first year, via social media, email etc. The UK Craft Beer Community is clearly engaged, knowledgeable and sociable! We want to provide a mechanism for bringing the community into our creative process, allowing people to participate in the planning, research, production and delivery of our products.

Q. Why do you have to charge for things? A. TWICB is run by just two people: Rob and Steve. Whilst it is undoubtedly a labour of love, it has developed into something that consumes a significant part of our working weeks. Steve works mainly on the Newsletter, where the New Beers Section alone takes many hours per week, to research, collate and format. Rob works mainly on the podcast, where each episode takes several hours to schedule, research, record, edit and promote. Whilst we will continue to invest this time to produce the free products, we think Patreon could be a great way of funding the time and effort that we want to devote to developing new products and services.

Q. Apart from your time, what specifically will the Patreon proceeds be used to fund? A. As soon as the COVID-19 situation permits, we want to take the podcast on the road, to record Brewer interviews at their own Taprooms, as well as record live segments at Festivals, Tap-Takeovers and other beery events of note. In order to provide a quality finished audio product, we will need to invest in some decent mobile recording equipment, not to mention the cost of travelling the length and breadth of Britain in the pursuit of great interviews!

Q. What is the thought process behind the bundles of Patreon Membership bonuses that you are offering? A. We have tried to come up with bundles that combine some community benefits, exclusive digital products, exclusive physical products, invites to exclusive TWICB events, discounts on TWICB Grand Tours and opportunities to participate in the TWICB creative process. We have tried to price each Membership Level so that each offers outstanding value for money. We have also tried to be mindful of the number of Patreon members that we can realistically include in each bonus activity. (Clearly the invite to participate in the podcast interview or attend the TWICB "Board Meeting" needs to be strictly limited in numbers, or else the bonus would cease to be "exclusive” and would risk disrupting the actual process itself.)

Q. Are the Membership Benefits and Levels set in stone? A. Of course not! We are literally making this up as we go along currently! We would love to get your feedback on the Levels, the Benefits, and indeed the very idea of using Patreon in the first place! Please hit us up on IG (@thisweekincraft.beer) or via email [email protected]. We confidently expect to need to adjust the Patreon model as we go along, based on feedback.

Q. Is this like a Gym membership, where I sign up in January, and then regret it for the rest of the year?! A. Definitely Not! Membership is month-to-month and you can cancel your membership at any time. Only caveat here is that certain Member Benefits (mainly those ones that involve a significant cost for us to provide to you) are only unlocked after three or six months at a certain tier.
