Career Beginnings Before making his World Wrestling Federation debut with his brother Jeff, Matt trained with retired wrestler Dory Funk, Jr.. [6] Matt, along with Jeff and his friends, created their own organization, trampoline Wrestling Federation (TWF), where they mimicked the movements they watched on television. Soon after, they changed the name of the promotion to OMEGA Wrestling, where Matt competed under the name High Voltage. [6] Soon after, Matt had to change his name because a World Championship Wrestling (WCW) group was using that name so he changed it to Surge. [7] The Hardys also fought for other wrestling organizations in North Carolina. In May 1994, Matt won the NEWA Championship and in March 1995 won the NEWA Couples Championship along with Venom. [2] A month later he defeated Willow by winning the NFWA Championship. [6] World Wrestling Federation / (1998-2005) Matt making his entrance to WrestleMania X8. 1998-1999 In 1998, the Hardy brothers signed with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) and were trained by Dory Funk, Jr. in their dojo along with other wrestlers such as Kurt Angle, Christian, Test and A-Train. [8] They eventually debuted at WWF in mid-1998, forming a team called The Hardy Boyz (later called The Hardys). The Hardys frequently fought in Shotgun and HEAT for much of the year before entering Raw's main campus. When Edge and Christian created the group The Brood in 1999, The Hardys began to be accompanied into the ring by Michael Hayes, who later established himself as their manager. On June 29, 1999, they won their first WWF Pair Championship by beating The Acolytes, losing it a month later in the Fully Loaded event to them. [9] After the dissolution of The Brood, The Hardys created together with the team's former member, Gangrel, a new group called The New Brood, beginning a feud with Edge and Christian, whom they defeated in No Mercy, winning Terri Runnels' services as manager. [10] Later, in Survivor Series and Armageddon, they participated in tag team matches, without achieving victory. [12] In early 2000, The Hardy Boys began to be accompanied into the ring by Lita, with whom they formed the group Team Xtreme. During the first quarter of the year they starred in several matches against other teams such as The Dudley Boys and Edge & Christian, facing the first in the Royal Rumble in a Tag Team Table Match; seconds in No Way Out; and both at WrestleMania 2000, with one win and two losses respectively. [15] WrestleMania's bout was chosen by Pro Wrestling Illustrated magazine as the 2000 Fight of the Year. After WrestleMania they fought occasionally on RAW and SmackDown! against couples such as the Dudley Boyz, Edge & Christian, Test & Albert and Too Cool. At SummerSlam, they were defeated by Edge & Christian in a TLC match in which the Dudley Boys also participated. [16] In Unforgiven they won the WWF Tag Team Championship after defeating Edge & Christian in a Steel Cage Match, but lost it to them in No Mercy. [18] However, a day later, they regained the championships after defeating Edge & Christian again, losing them on November 6 to Right to Censor. [19] In Survivor Series, Matt's team won the classic elimination match, jeff being the only survivor of the match. [20] During the month of December, Team Xtreme had a short rivalry with The Radicalz, whom they faced on numerous occasions on RAW and SmackDown!, as well as having a match in Armageddon, where they were defeated. [21] At the Royal Event Matt participated in the Royal Rumble Match where he was quickly eliminated. [22] Then, at WrestleMania X-Seven and Insurrextion, The Hardys faced Edge and Christian, being defeated in both matches. [23] In the smackDown edition! on 26 April 2001 he won the European Championship with the help of his brother and Lita by defeating Eddie Guerrero. Hardy successfully defended the title against Guerrero and Christian three days later in Backlash. Despite this, he continued to fight alongside his brother in couples matches in Insurrextion and Judgment Day. He also defended the title in King of the Ring against Justin Credible, but lost it on August 27 on RAW to The Hurricane. He then fought again in the pairs division, winning the WCW World Couples Championship on October 8 on RAW by defeating Booker T&Test. During his reign, they began a feud with The Alliance team The Dudley Boyz, losing the championship to them on October 23. They tried to get him back in Rebellion in a match where The APA (Faarooq & Bradshaw) also participated, but failed to do so. However, they won the WWF Couples Championship on November 12 by defeating Booker T&Test, challenging The Dudley Boyz to a unification match in Survivor Series. However, The Hardys lost the fight and titles. After losing the titles Matt had a little feud with his brother Jeff which led them to a match in Vengeance, where Jeff emerged victorious. [24] 2002-2005 Jeff and Matt returned at the 2002 Royal Rumble, with no mention of their previous rivalry, where they were quickly eliminated by The Undertaker. [25] In No Way Out, The Hardys participated in a Tag Team Turmoil match but were defeated by The APA. [26] They also participated in WrestleMania X8 where they were defeated by Billy and Chuck in a World Tag Team Championship match. [27] After this, during the first draft, The Hardys split when Matt moved on to SmackDown! and Jeff stayed on RAW. Despite this, he continued to pair with Jeff at Insurrextion, defeating Brock Lesnar & Shawn Stasiak, in Judgment Day losing to Brock Lesnar & Paul Heyman and King of the Ring, defeating Stevie Richards & Raven. Then in his singles stage he was defeated by Booker T in Rebellion. In 2003 he participated in the Royal Rumble Match in the Royal Rumble event and was eliminated by Brock Lesnar who was the winner. Shortly after joining SmackDown!, he called himself Matt Hardy Version 1.0, creating a lifestyle and calling himself the Guru of The Mattitude, following Shannon Moore and Crash Holly. In addition, he began losing weight below 100 kilos in order to fight in the CruiserWeight division. Once he was below the limit, he won the Cruiserweight Championship of the by defeating Billy Kidman for himself in No Way Out. He then began a feud with Rey Mysterio, whom he defeated at WrestleMania XIX, retaining the title. A month later, Mysterio managed to defeat Hardy for the Cruiserweight Championship on SmackDown!. Then at Vengeance he participated in the APA Bar Room Brawl where he could not win and the match was won by Bradshaw. Later at SummerSlam he defeated Zach Gowen after he could not fight for injuries declaring Matt the winning referee. He then continued his feud with Gowen facing both in No Mercy being defeated. In 2004, Matt participated in the Royal Rumble Match at Royal Rumble but was eliminated by Rene Duprée. He was then defeated by Val Venis in Backlash. Months later, Matt Hardy's girlfriend Lita became the center of attention for Kane, who began harassing her. For weeks, Kane attacked Hardy while chasing Lita. In June, Lita told Matt she was pregnant, but a week later, when Matt went to propose to her, Kane told her the baby was hers. Against this, a fight was agreed without disqualification between the two in Vengeance, where Hardy won the match. However, Lita had a DNA test and discovered that the father was Kane. Although Matt told her that he didn't care and wanted to marry her, Kane attacked him and tried to marry Lita. At SummerSlam, the two faced each other again to see who would marry Lita, winning Kane the match. Two weeks later, during the wedding between Kane and Lita, Hardy interfered at the ceremony, but Kane applied a Chokeslam to him from the stage entrance, causing him an injury that kept him inactive.
