Under our constitution, we require directors from every municipality of Elgin and Middlesex. Elgin municipalities are represented except for Southwold. There is a definite need for additional volunteers to step forward to represent the Middlesex portion of our chapter. Arrange to have someone nominate you or nominate yourself prior to or at the AGM. If you have any questions or a nomination, please contact Ron Casier at 519 318 5279 or [email protected] I will be happy to discuss the executive positions. For this year’s election at the AGM, all the current executive have agreed to stand for their term. Nominations from the floor will accepted. On that note the position of Second Vice-President will be open for nominations at the upcoming AGM as well as a number of directors. OWA Request for Volunteers The provincial Executive and board which includes all chapter presidents or their designate has requested a minimum of three names from each chapter to sit on various committees of the OWA. This will garner broader support and better representation of all regions in the organization and enhance ongoing efforts at the provincial level. There is a variety of committees listed on the OWA website which may interest you. Almost all committee work is done by teleconferencing so does not involve travelling to meetings. If you are interested in being involved at the OWA level please contact Ron Casier at 519 631 5279 or [email protected] OWA Woodlot Conference and AGM Reminder of the upcoming 27th OWA Woodlot Conference and AGM at Niagara-on-the-Lake on Tuesday, April 21, 2020 (Tours) and Wednesday, April 22, 2020 (Conference/AGM). This year’s theme is ‘Our Valuable Woodlots’. REMEMBER TO REGISTER for the tours and conference SOON on the OWA site! Ontario Woodlands Appreciation Week 2020 NEW! May 3 to May 9 Woodlot owners make up a tiny percentage of Ontario's population, but their forests provide services to society that undoubtedly would be set at billions of dollars. And so, the OWA Board has declared May 3 to 9, 2020, as Ontario Woodlands Appreciation Week (OWAW) and is asking our membership to plan activities in their woodlots that celebrate good stewardship of this essential natural resource. Nowadays, a lot of attention is being paid to the importance of creating new forests to mitigate the effects of climate change. While the OWA supports this approach, it also believes that we need to properly manage our existing forests to ensure the long term environmental, aesthetic, and economic benefits that they provide to all society. The OWA also recognizes that in the south half of the province, these forests are usually owned by ordinary citizens or families. We need to spread the word about that tiny percentage of the population that has the job of being stewards of Ontario's non-Crown forests; their fascination with trees and their efforts to “do the right thing”. Our first partner in this endeavour is Birds Canada. They have set up a portal on their website where OWA members can register and report findings of stick and cavity nests. This important data will help Birds Canada compile more comprehensive data on various species that inhabit the interior forest. Input from our members will be tabulated separately so the OWA will be credited with their contribution to this citizen science initiative. Whether it is an individual exercise (take a selfie with your favourite tree), a group or chapter activity (woods walk or tree planting), or a partnership with a like-minded organization, get out there and do something. The Thames Talbot Land Trust and Nature London have woodland hikes planned in Middlesex and Elgin counties for the weekend of May 9 and 10, which are open to the public. EMWOA members and their families are welcome to participate. So keep the weekend free! One of the primary mandates of the OWA is to promote “healthy, productive woodlots”. With your help, we'll be able to put a face on that message as well. For more information contact Stan Caveney at 519-472-6103.
