Présente-nous la genèse du projet Dernière Volonté, du tout début jusqu’à la première sortie, à savoir “ Obéir et mourir ” en double cassette chez La Nouvelle Alliance il y a maintenant huit ans ? Pour être plus précis, Dernière Volonté existe depuis 12 ans, mes débuts officieux remontent donc à 1994.C’est donc durant cette année et avec peu de moyens que j’ai enregistré une cassette (‘Résistance’ que je n’ai jamais publié) assez bruitiste sur laquelle j’avais mixé des rythmes militaires, des ‘cut-up’ et des basses synthétiques. Pendant plusieurs mois, j’ai expérimenté différents procédés d’enregistrement (ralenti, inversion, distorsion et cut-up) et comme je n’avais pas le moindre sou pour m’acheter un sampler, je faisais mes propres ‘loop’ via des bandes magnétiques coupées et collées. C’était vraiment complexe mais il y avait une vraie ‘dynamique’ dans le son, et un résultat tout à fait surprenant. Evidement les bandes s’abîmaient et se détendaient et ça transformait vraiment la tonalité de ce qui était enregistré (c’est un procédé que j’ai gardé par la suite notamment pour Obéir et Mourir).

Late 1960's - Early 1970's The birth of heavy metal. Groups like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple were the first heavy metal bands. Late 1970's The rise of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest become very popular. 1978 Van Halen released their debut album. This began the Los Angeles/Sunset Strip scene, and many bands would come out of this era, including Motley Crue and Quiet Riot. The so called "hair bands" like Poison, Warrant and Ratt came from that scene as well. The Who's Keith Moon died. Bands formed this year: Dokken, Ratt, Whitesnake A sample of heavy metal albums released in 1978: Black Sabbath - Never Say Die Judas Priest - Stained Class UFO - Obsession 1979 The German band Accept releases their self-titled debut album. They are considered to be the first European power metal band. Ozzy Osbourne was fired from Black Sabbath and replaced by Ronnie James Dio. Bands formed this year: Europe, Hanoi Rocks, Trouble and Venom. Our first Boston show was with DYS, The Mighty COs and The AMERICA’S HARDCORE FU’s. It was very intense for us. We were so intimidated. Future generations will fuck up again THE OUTPATIENTS got started in 1982 by Deep Wound bassist Scott Helland At least we can try and change the one we’re in and his older brother Eric “Vis” Helland, guitarist/vocalist of Mace — a 1980-82 — Deep Wound, “Deep Wound” Metal group that played like Motörhead but dug Black Flag (a rare blend back then). The Outpatients opened for bands like EAST COAST Black Flag, Hüsker Dü and SSD. Flipside called ’em “one of the most brutalizing live bands In 1980, over-with small cities and run-down mill towns across the Northeast from the period.” 1983’s gnarly Basement Tape teemed with bored kids with nothing to do. Comme toutes les cultures « underground », le metal extrême n’est pas une histoire qui peut être vécue par procuration. Il apparaît donc qu’une partie des artistes dont l’œuvre est marquée en profondeur par cette culture ont été activement impliqués dans celle-ci. L’exposition Altars of Madness réunit les principaux d’entre eux. L’exposition pose sans détour la question de l’extrême, puis explore le genre musical sous les angles tour à tour de la politique, de la mort et d’un rapport païen au paysage.
