THERE are so many things to be said respecting the career and the writings of S. Bernard of Clairvaux, and so high are view of his the praises which must, on any just character, be considered his due, that an eloquence not less than his own would be needed to give adequate expression to them. and able labourer He was an untiring transcendently ; and that in many fields. Travels in America: Aelred Carlyle, His American “Allies,” and Anglican Benedictine Monasticism Rene Kollar Saint Vincent Archabbey, Latrobe, Pennsylvania N FEBRUARY 1913, Abbot Aelred Carlyle and a majority of the Benedictine monks of Caldey Island, South Wales, renounced the Anglican Church and converted to I Roman Catholicism.1 For years, the Caldey Island monastery had been a show piece of Anglo-Catholicism and a testimony to the catholic heritage of the Anglican Church, but when Charles Gore, the Bishop of Oxford, tried to regularize their status within Anglicanism by forcing Carlyle and the monks to agree to a series of demands which would radically alter their High Church liturgy and devotions, the monks voted to join the Church of Rome. The demands of the Great War, however, strained the fragile finances of the island monastery, and during the spring of 1918, Abbot Carlyle traveled to America to solicit funds for his monastery. “And it was indeed sheer necessity that took me away from the quiet shores of Caldey,” he told the readers of Pax, the community’s magazine, but “Caldey has suffered grievously through the war.”2 Abbot Carlyle saw a possible solution to his problems. “In our need we turned to our Catholic Allies in the United States, and my duty seemed obvious that I should accept the invitation I had received to go to New York to plead in person the cause of Caldey there.” Carlyle had not forgotten lessons from the past. During his years as an Anglican monk, the American connection proved to be an important asset in the realization of his monastic dreams. -

Although the basic structure of them all has faithfully respected the outline proposed by the Founder and the first Brothers in the foundation’s early years (1691-1694), it is no less true that the content included in this permanent context has varied substantially over the years. The most recent change was made, precisely, by the Institute’s penultimate General Chapter in the Spring of 2007. A profession formula is not just any text, at least among Lasallians. Since the beginning, all the essentials of Lasallian consecration, what De La Salle’s followers are and should be, are contained therein: God, other Lasallians (i.e., the community), the school, the poor, the radical nature of its presentation. It is therefore an essential part of our institutional heritage, on which it would be advisable to return more often than we usually do. -

This thesis is a comparative study of the eremitic life in England and France during the period when it had, arguably, reached the height of its popularity. While eremitism in both countries shared many common characteristics, there were also differing interpretations of how this ideal should be achieved. -

78 SACRED BONDS IN THE CONSECRATED LIFE By GERMAIN LESAGE F o R MANY centuries, theologians have taught us that there is only one way of being co-opted into the religious state of life -- the vow. Now, however, Lumen Gentium, in its chapter on religious, declares that they bind themselves to the practice of the evangelical counsels not simply by vows, but by 'other sacred bonds similar in nature to vows' (44). And the same text goes on to say that the consecration deriving from religious profession will be 'the more perfect in proportion as the indissoluble union of Christ with his bride the Church is re-presented in the strength and permanence of the bonds' (ibid.). The declaration is an open invitation to historians, theologians and canonists to investigate the doctrinal and traditional foundations of the form and object of the obligation involved in the profession of the counsels, in these cases where the sacred bond is not the vow. In other words the Council has judged it appropriate to consider the reasons according to which the evangelical counsels proper to the consecrated life can be practised in a variety of ways, and also how people can dedicate themselves in various ways with a permanence that is also supernatural. From the various post-conciliar documents and the general lines of revision set out in the draft Canon Law, we learn that the consecrated life can be of four kinds: the religious community, the society of the common life, the secular institute and the eremitical life. The purpose of this paper is, on the basis of these four types, to inquire how, at various times and according to the variety of theological opinion, the christian faithful who 'are more intimately consecrated to the divine service', 1 have bound themselves or can still do so today in a supernatural and permanent way to that state of life which, known in the past as the 'religious life', is now to be designated 'the consecrated life'. -

From the Holy Land to the Cloister: The Decline of Female Ascetic Pilgrimages in the Early Medieval West (c. 350-615) Manon Claire Williams Department of History University of Colorado at Boulder Primary Thesis Advisor Dr. Scott Bruce, Department of History Honors Council Representative Dr. Fred Anderson, Department of History Outside Reader Dr. Andrew Cain, Department of Classics Defense: April 2nd 2015 Abstract This paper will focus on the mobility of ascetic women from late antiquity through to the early Middle Ages with a particular emphasis on the practice of pilgrimage. As seen in multiple primary source documents, religious women from the West were journeying to the Holy Land and beyond from the fourth through to the early fifth centuries. This practice, however, is mentioned remarkably less in accounts of religious women north of the Alps in the late fifth century onwards. Evidence of women undertaking pilgrimages to the Holy Land is sparse while their male counterparts continued to make such journeys. Although the monastic rules that cloistered women certainly did have an impact on the movement of religious women in the early medieval West as other scholars have argued, there are a variety of external and non-religious factors that also contributed to the decline of female ascetic pilgrimages. This thesis will aim to give a more complete answer to this decline by focusing on the functions that religious women played in their communities, which effectively bound them to those same communities. Due to a lack of source material, the main focus of the early medieval period will be in Gaul, which will provide a case study for understanding the roles that religious women played in society within the context of early Merovingian politics and economy. -
