Nebenbei macht sie kleine Jobs und bewegt sich im Großstadtleben mit einer hohen FreQuenz. Eines Nachts landet Sita im Atelier eines israelischen Fotokünstlers und etwas an Jocquin berührt Sita auf ungewohnte Weise. Er geht ihr nicht so schnell wieder aus dem Kopf, wie sie es eigentlich angenommen hatte. Zum 95. Geburtstag ihres geliebten Großvaters fährt Sita nach Wien, wo auch ihr Vater Lenzi mit seiner neuen Frau und einem gemeinsamen kleinen Sohn lebt. Am Abend nach dem großen Fest stößt Sita in der Wohnung ihres Vaters auf ein Foto, das ihren Großvater in SS- Uniform zeigt. Gegen den Willen ihres Vaters beginnt Sita in der Vergangenheit ihres Großvaters zu kra- men. Ihr wird zunehmend klar, dass nicht nur ihr Großvater, sondern auch ihr Vater ihr eini- ges verschwiegen haben. Sita bleibt hartnäckig: ein Dokument in einem Wiener Archiv führt sie nach Polen, ein Erinnerungsfoto des Großvaters nach Warschau. Sita dringt immer tiefer in die Abgründe ihrer Familie vor. Auf dieser Reise in die Vergangen- heit der älteren Generationen begegnet sie unerwartet Jocquin wieder. Sitas Perspektive auf ihr eigenes Leben verdichtet sich. Als sie selbst an den Rand der Erschöpfung gelangt, muß sie erkennen, dass sie selbst die Schuld nicht abarbeiten kann. Sie studierte zunächst Theaterwissenschaft, Germanistik und Publizistik bevor sie 1991 mit dem Regie- und Drehbuchstudium an der Wiener Filmakademie begann. Sie arbeitete als Regie- und Schnittassistentin und spielte als Schauspielerin unter anderem in "Memory of the Unknown" (Regie: Natalie Alonso Casale) und "Crash Test Dummies" (Regie: Jörg Kalt) mit. Ihren international erfolgreichen Kurzfil- men folgte der erste Langspielfilm "Nordrand", der 1999 bei den Filmfestspielen in Venedig gezeigt wurde. Nina Proll gewann den Marcello Mastroianni-Preis als beste Nachwuchs- schauspielerin. Im selben Jahr gründete Barbara Albert gemeinsam mit Martin Gschlacht, Jessica Hausner und Antonin Svoboda die Produktionsfirma coop99. Barbara Albert fungier- te als Co-Autorin bei "Grbavica" (Goldener Bär bei der Berlinale 2006), "Slumming" (im Wett- bewerb der Berlinale 2006), "Das Fräulein" (Goldener Leopard in Locarno 2006) und "Strug- gle" (Cannes 2003). Außerdem schrieb sie das Drehbuch zum Spielfilm "Auswege" (Regie: Nina Kusturica, Berlinale 2004, Perspektiven des jungen Films). Als Produzentin war Barba- ra Albert mitverantwortlich für "Darwin's Nightmare" (Hubert Sauper), "Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei" (Hans Weingartner) und "Schläfer" (Benjamin Heisenberg). Daneben war (und ist) sie als Gastprofessorin und Lektorin an mehreren Hochschulen in Ös- terreich und Deutschland tätig (Wiener Filmakademie, ifs Köln, KHM Karlsruhe, FH St. Pöl- ten). 2007 wurde ihr Sohn Tristan Sunny geboren, seit 2010 lebt sie in Berlin. 5 AUORINNENSTATEMENT DIE LEBENDEN ist ein Film über Schuld und Verantwortung. Nicht nur über die Schuld der Täter einst, sondern auch über Schuld und Verantwortung jeder einzelnen Person heute. Im Mittelpunkt des Films steht eine Figur, SITA. Sie ist die zentrale Figur, um die alles kreist - und pulsierendes Herz des Films. Eine junge, energiegeladene Frau, die, ständig auf der Su- che, dabei auf dem Grat des alten und neuen Europa wandelt. Das Wegschauen des Vaters ist der konventionelle Umgang mit der Familienschuld, Sita stellt sich dagegen, will hinschauen – und kann nur dadurch verzeihen. Erst durch ihr Akzep- tieren der Vergangenheit ihres Großvaters wird ein Verzeihen möglich, und erst durchs Ver- zeihen der Weg für einen Neuanfang geebnet. Meine eigene Familie kommt väterlicherseits aus Siebenbürgen, Rumänien – und so bin ich mit den Themen Verlust der Heimat und Entwurzelung aufgewachsen (auf ganz andere Wei- se habe ich in meinen Filmen NORDRAND und SOMEWHERE ELSE bereits das Thema be- handelt). Die Siebenbürger Sachsen sind durch den Zweiten Weltkrieg gleichermaßen zu Tä- tern und Opfern geworden. Meine Großtante wurde in russische Gefangenschaft verschleppt – andere Verwandte wur- den aufgrund ihrer freiwilligen Meldung zur SS oft aufgrund von Kriegsverletzungen als Wachpersonal in Konzentrationslagern eingesetzt. Dem Drehbuch liegen viele Reisen an die Orte, die auch Sita besucht, aber auch Recher- chen im Dokumentationsarchiv des Österreichischen Widerstands in Wien, im Jüdischen Mu- seum in Warschau und in Archiven in Berlin, zugrunde. Über meinen Großonkel und Schriftsteller Dieter Schlesak (zuletzt: „Capesius – der Ausch- witzapotheker“) konnte ich viel handgeschriebenes Material

The study thus positions the period of analysis as an historical period in the changing representation of transgender characters. A discourse analysis is employed that not only assesses the way that transgender characters have been represented, but contextualizes American fictional television depictions of transgender people within the broader sociopolitical landscape in which those depictions have emerged and which they likely inform. Television representations and the social milieu in which they are situated are considered as parallel, mutually informing discourses, including the ways in which those representations have been engaged discursively through reviews, news coverage and, in some cases, blogs. ii To Desmond, Oonagh and Eamonn For everything.     Exploring the Hypervisibility Paradox: Older Lesbians in Contemporary Mainstream Cinema (1995-2009) Eva Krainitzki A thesis submitted to The University of Gloucestershire in accordance with the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Media, Arts and Technology July 2011 1 0 Abstract This thesis explores the intersection of age, gender and sexuality in representations of older lesbian characters in contemporary narrative film. Taking the 1990s as a benchmark of lesbian visibility, I explore the turn of the century representability by focusing on British and American film (1995 to 2009). I identify a hypervisibility paradox during this period of cinematic production where the presence of a multitude of young lesbian and bisexual characters can be seen to be in complete contrast with the invisibility of the older lesbian. Mainstream postfeminist culture censors the ageing female body, except in its ‘successfully aged’, youthful, heterosexualised form. Older lesbian characters are excluded from this frame of visibility and, instead, are represented through paradigms associated with the concept of ‘ageing as decline.’ There is little in existing age studies or lesbian film studies to articulate an understanding of the intersection of age, gender and sexuality in cinematic representation. I adopt an interdisciplinary cultural studies approach to make my contribution in what is an under-researched area and present a multifaceted approach to a complex cultural image. I investigate the continuity of the concept of the lesbian as ghostly (Castle, 1993) through narratives of illness, death and mourning. I argue that the narrative of ‘ageing as decline’ stands in for the process of ‘killing off’ lesbian characters (identified in 1960s and 1970s cinema).
