Danijel Brlas Simfonija stiliziranog neposluha ili: Dobro nam došli, gospodine Suzuki! Uz retrospektivu filmova Seijuna Suzukija, Filmski programi, 4. lipnja – 2. srpnja 2012. Zagrebačko kino Tuškanac i riječko Art-kino Croatia ove su godine otvorili svoja vrata široko obuhvatnoj retrospektivi jednog od najzanimljivijih autora u povijesti japanske, ali i svjetske kine- matografije. Uvrnute filmske eskapade Seijuna Suzukija time su prvi put zabljesnule na domaćim kinoekranima u svojim originalnim formatima, okupljene u broju dostojnom ovog klasika japan- skog modernizma. Unatoč relativnoj zastupljenosti na domaćim filmskim festivalima i sporadič- nim retrospektivama (primjerice u posljednjih nekoliko godina ciklusi suvremenog japanskog fil- ma održavali su se u sklopu Filmskih programa Hrvatskog filmskog saveza te na nultom izdanju Fantastic Zagreb Film Festivala), može se ustvrditi kako su zahvaljujući ovomu projektu domaći filmofili bili u prigodi prisustvovati jednoj od najcjelovitijih i najusustavljenijih retrospektiva ja- panskog filma do sada. Činjenica da je riječ o autoru koji je svjetsku reputaciju stekao tek dvadese- tak godina nakon što je načinio svoja najglasovitija djela – a hrvatskoj publici bilo je potrebno još otprilike toliko da se službeno upozna s njegovim radom – čini cijeli ovaj projekt još vrednijim. U programu retrospektive većim je dijelom bilo zastupljeno razdoblje koje je Suzuki proveo pod ugovorom s filmskim studijem Nikkatsu – čak devetnaest od 22 filma pripada tom razdoblju. Prikladno, budući da Nikkatsu baš ove godine slavi svoju 100. obljetnicu djelovanja, ali i posve razumno, budući da je najveći dio Suzukijeva opusa nastao upravo na Nikkatsuovoj tekućoj vrpci, a dobrim dijelom i kao reakcija na nju. Upravo su ta dva elementa – krotko štancanje žanrovskih naslova i ozlojeđeni revolt prema istom – ključna za Suzukijevu filmografiju. Nastao u sklopu ovogodišnjih Filmskih mutacija: festivala nevidljivog filma, program je zorno dočarao dihotomiju u Suzukijevim filmovima, svojevrstan oblik nasilna prožimanja industrijskog, komercijalnog, žan- rovski strogo kodirana aspekta s jedne strane i autorskih, avangardističkih težnji s druge. Odabir da se filmovi prikazuju nekronološki, u naizgled nasumično odabranim parovima, svakako je do- datno naglasio tu opreku. Tako smo umjesto klasično narativne progresije – od šegrtskih poče- taka i pokoravanja studijskim prohtjevima preko postupna provlačenja kroz rupe korporativnog nemara do mahnitog, nezadrživog rasplamsaja kreativne energije koja je napokon razorila okove industrije i učinila osebujna sineasta (nezaposlenom) ikonom japanskog modernizma – dobili prikaz spomenute opreke u nešto manje uobičajenom poretku: korporativno i kreativno u pri- rodnom antagonizmu, ali i neraskidivo povezano. Drugim riječima, iz Suzukijeve filmografije ra- zvidne “mutacije žanrovskih prekoračenja” – da posudimo termin organizatorice programa Tanje Hrvatski Vrvilo – u ovakvu aranžmanu

II Abstract In 2004, annual Australian viewership of Australian cinema, regularly averaging below 5%, reached an all-time low of 1.3%. Considering Australia ranks among the top nations in both screens and cinema attendance per capita, and that Australians’ biggest cultural consumption is screen products and multi-media equipment, suggests that Australians love cinema, but refrain from watching their own. Why? During its golden period, 1970-1988, Australian cinema was operating under combined private and government investment, and responsible for critical and commercial successes. However, over the past thirty years, 1988-2018, due to the detrimental role of government film agencies played in binding Australian cinema to government funding, Australian films are perceived as under-developed, low budget, and depressing. Out of hundreds of films produced, and investment of billions of dollars, only a dozen managed to recoup their budget. The thesis demonstrates how ‘Australian national cinema’ discourse helped funding bodies consolidate their power. Australian filmmaking is defined by three ongoing and unresolved frictions: one external and two internal.     WMC INVESTIGATION: 10-YEAR ANALYSIS OF GENDER & OSCAR NOMINATIONS womensmediacenter.com @womensmediacntr WOMEN’S MEDIA CENTER ABOUT THE WOMEN’S MEDIA CENTER In 2005, Jane Fonda, Robin Morgan, and Gloria Steinem founded the Women’s Media Center (WMC), a progressive, nonpartisan, nonproft organization endeav- oring to raise the visibility, viability, and decision-making power of women and girls in media and thereby ensuring that their stories get told and their voices are heard. To reach those necessary goals, we strategically use an array of interconnected channels and platforms to transform not only the media landscape but also a cul- ture in which women’s and girls’ voices, stories, experiences, and images are nei- ther suffciently amplifed nor placed on par with the voices, stories, experiences, and images of men and boys. Our strategic tools include monitoring the media; commissioning and conducting research; and undertaking other special initiatives to spotlight gender and racial bias in news coverage, entertainment flm and television, social media, and other key sectors. S ist wie fast jedes Jahr: erst wenn alle Anderen ihren Urlaub schon absolviert haben, sind wir dran. Aber so ein richtiger Urlaub ist das eigentlich gar nicht. Nichts von we- gen faul am Strand liegen und sich Filme in HD auf dem Smartphone reinziehen! Das Fantasy Filmfest Fotos (c) 2012 by Wolfram Hannemann steht bereits vor der Tür und wird uns wieder eine ganze Woche lang von morgens bis spät in die Nacht hinein mit aktueller Filmware ver- sorgen. Wie immer werden wir be- müht sein, möglichst viele der prä- sentierten Filme auch tatsächlich zu sehen. Schließlich wird eine Groß- zahl der Produktionen bereits kurze Zeit nach Ende des Festivals auf DVD und BD verfügbar sein. Und da möchte man natürlich schon vor- her wissen, ob sich ein Kauf lohnen wird. Nach unserer Sommerpause werden wir in einem der Newsletter wieder ein Resümee des Festivals ziehen. Tras graduarse en la Universidad de San Diego no encontraba trabajo, y cuando le comentaron que un hogar de acogida de jóvenes problemáticos estaba contratando monitores en prácticas, no dudó en aceptar el empleo. El director explica cómo sufrió el primer día: “Tenía mucho miedo de hacer algo mal y de que eso empeorase el estado de los chicos. Después de un mes, me enamoré del trabajo”. Estuvo trabajando en ese hogar de acogida más de dos años. Esta experiencia cambió la vida del director, y para su proyecto de final de Máster en Cine, cursado en la Universidad Estatal de San Diego, realizó un cortometraje de 20 minutos basado en sus experiencias en el hogar de acogida.
