St Giles Church, is the Anglican Parish Church of Pontefract. Situated in the heart of the town the Grade II* listed building, with its unique octagonal tower that is visible for miles around, proclaims the Glory of God to the people of Pontefract and its many visitors. We would like to thank you for choosing to visit our lively and growing church. We are an open, welcoming and inclusive parish and we are sure that you will enjoy your visit. Everyone is welcome here at St Giles’ and if you require any assistance or information, please ask one of our Open Church volunteers. The windows are fine examples of Victorian stained glass. The windows in the North and South aisles depict biblical passages and are dedicated to long serving vicars and members of notable Pontefract families. The research for this guide was assisted by Bruce Dalgleish and Adrian Pope. As usual, Janette (our College Secretary) and I would like to start this prospectus off by offering a massive thank you to all of our volunteers, partners and extended team members for their continued support, hard work and contributions to the Wakefield and 5 Towns Recovery College and its students; Welcome to our your efforts really are making a difference to the lives of our students. This year, alongside our sister recovery colleges within the Trust, we have piloted some new outcome measures in the hope of capturing some of the impact that the college is having. We have found that not only are the colleges recovery college helping to give people the motivation, encouragement and tools they need to look after their own health and wellbeing, but those who complete a course have been found to decrease their contact with health services by 60%.     WAKEFIELD CIVIC SOCIETY Building interest in Wakefield since 1964 Our Vision for Wakefield Preface On 29th February 1964, The Wakefield Express published a letter written on behalf of a group of local residents who were concerned about what was happening with regard to the ‘architectural and planning future of the city’. With the pressures of a rising population and increasing numbers of vehicles being used on our roads, not just in Wakefield, but across the country, the signatories to the letter were worried that decisions about what happened in Wakefield would be made solely by the Council. While the authors recognised that it was the responsibility of elected representatives and officials of the Council to determine what should happen, the writers of the letter wanted those decisions to be informed through debate with a cohort of ‘interested and instructed’ members of the general public who had been brought together under the aegis of a new type of organisation, a ‘civic society’, examples of which were already being established in other parts of the country. The purpose of these new societies was described as being ‘to educate and interest [their] members in planning, design and architecture; to care for the preservation of what is best from the past; to take action, if necessary, on current development; and most importantly of all, to give thought and study for the future’. The main proposal outlined in the letter was to hold a public meeting to discuss the establishment of a civic society for Wakefield with the aim of ensuring that the city would continue to be ‘a pleasant and fair place’ in which to live.

Our aim is to work in partnership with communities to tell stories that unite them in creative and innovative ways, by delivering the highest quality exhibitions, learning and events, based on our museum collections, in welcoming, family friendly spaces that are close by and have free entry. Wakefield Museums & Castles has a successful track record of working with artists and groups. We are currently developing a major special exhibition at Wakefield Museum, working with a paper sculptor, animator and audio-visual artist to create an immersive, multi-sensory experience. Purpose of the Report 1.1 This report sets out the updated Capital Programme for 2018/19 to 2021/22 and includes an updated forecast of resources available over that period. The Council continues to deliver significant capital investment that will improve infrastructure, support economic regeneration and improve facilities across the District. The summary capital programme is included at Appendix 2. 1.2 This report also includes, at Appendix 1, the Council’s Capital and Investment Strategy as required by the revised CIPFA Prudential Code. 1.3 The Treasury Management Strategy for 2019/20 is also included at Appendix 3. 2.
