Turner/Released) U.S. Navy awards BAE Systems $41 million contract to modernize USS Oscar Austin 3 Jan 2018 BAE Systems has received a $41.6 million contract from the U.S. Navy to modernize the guided missile destroyer USS Oscar Austin (DDG 79). The Oscar Austin will undergo 12 months of extensive work at the company’s shipyard in Norfolk, Virginia, the ship’s homeport. The contract includes options that, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value to $117.1 million. Under the depot maintenance period (DMP) contract, BAE Systems will dry-dock the 509- foot-long Oscar Austin. The shipyard’s employees and subcontractors will then upgrade the ship’s Aegis Combat System and will perform alterations and miscellaneous repairs that will affect nearly every onboard space. The work is expected to begin in February and be completed in February 2019. “The work we will perform on the Oscar Austin is large and complex, and will involve a large number of our employees and subcontractors,” said Dave Thomas, vice president and general manager of BAE Systems Norfolk Ship Repair.

Upon assumption of command, Vice Admiral Muhammad Amjad Khan Niaziis now the Commander of all training units of Pakistan Navy at Karachi. Whereas, Vice Admiral AsifKhaliq is now the Operational Commander of Pakistan Navy’s Fleet including Ships, Fast Attack Craft (Missile), Submarines and Aviation units. Vice Admiral Muhammad Amjad Khan Niazi joined Pakistan Navy in 1983. Also a recipient of Sword of Honour, the Admiral has an illustrious career with wide ranging experience of variousCommand and Staff appointments. His major Command appointments include Commanding Officer PNS BADR, Commanding Officer PNS TARIQ, Commander18th Destroyer squadron, Commandant PNS BAHADUR and Commandant Pakistan Navy War College, Lahore. PNS KHAIBAR is a Type-21 frigate and PNS NASR is a combat support ship. Cdre Javaid lqbal, Commander 9th Auxiliary & Mine Warfare Squadron is commanding the Pakistan Navy Task Group as Mission Commander. During the visit, the Mission Commander along with Commanding Officers of the Ships held meetings with military leadership of Seychelles and discussed matters of mutual interests. This included call on with Ambassador Maurice Loustau Lalanne, Minister of Tourism, Brigadier Leopold F Payet, Chief of Seychelles Peoples Defence Forces, Mr Kishnan Laborite, Commissioner of the Seychelles Police, Mr David Andre, Mayor of Victoria and Ms Sheryl Vartgadasamy, Special Advisor (Police) to Minister of Home Affairs. Philanthropic activities like visit to St. Elizabeth Orphanage and La Retraite Elderly Home were also undertaken with donation of gifts. Officers and men of both the ships also visited Regional Coordination Operations Centre (RCOC) and discussed the importance of information sharing in maritime domain. Naval forces, as extension of Government's foreign policy, have historically contributed to strengthen the bonds of friendship between nations through such goodwill visits. Cognizant of this fact, Pakistan Navy has always endeavoured to enhance collaboration with friendly countries. ISRO‟S SPACEPORT ISRO‘s first and only spaceport, the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), is located in Sriharikota, about 100 km north of Chennai, in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The organisation launches its PSLV and GSLV rockets from here. The SDSC, setup in 1971, currently has two active launchpads. Its first launchpad was decommissioned once the Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle programme ended in 1994. The first of the two active pads mostly services the PSLV and the second, the GSLV, and which ISRO is currently modifying to accommodate crewed vehicle missions as part of its upcoming human spaceflight project, Gaganyaan. The second spaceport at Kulasekarapattinam is expected to provide an important advantage to ISRO‘s upcoming Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV), a smaller counterpart of the PSLV. KAVALAN - SOS MOBILE APP: The Kavalan – SOS app was launched as part of the Tamil Nadu State Police Master Control Room initiative. People of Tamil Nadu can use to seek police assistance instantly in emergency situations such as physical emergencies, eve teasing, kidnapping or natural disasters such as floods, earthquake, etc. People residing in Tamil Nadu, especially, Women & elderly people can use the Kavalan – SOS app whenever they feel vulnerable or threatened.
