[email protected] Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Kochi - 18 Mariculture of finfish on a commercial scale is non-existent in India. CMFRI, RGCA of MPEDA, CIBA are the Institutions promoting finfish mariculture with demonstrated seed production capabilities of Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer), cobia (Rachycentron canadum) and silver pompano (Trachynotus blochii). Seed production is not sufficient enough togo in for commercial scale investment. Requisite private investment has not flown into this segment of aquabusiness and Public Private Partnerships (PPP) are yet to take off. The scenario being this in the case of one (seed) of the two major inputs in this food production system, feeds and feeding, which is the other is the subject of elaboration here. Quality marine fish like king seer, pomfrets and tuna retails at more than Rs.400/- per kg in domestic markets. In metro cities it Rs.1000/- per kg is not surprising. With this purchasing power in the domestic market, most of the farmed marine fish is sold to such a clientele which is ever increasing in India. Therefore, without any assurance of a sustainable supply of such fish from capture fisheries, there is no doubt that we have to farm quality marine fish. With as deficit in seed supply at present, let us examine nutrition, feeds and feed technology required for this farming system in India. Farming sites, technologies of cage fabrication and launch, day-to-day management, social issues, policy, economics and health management, harvest and marketing, development of value chains, traceability and certification are all equally important and may or may not be dealt with in this training programme. -

Improving this relationship represents a signicant challenge to the aquaculture industry. A quantum leap in the scale of global food production is imperative to support increasing food needs on a global scale, as the human population continues to grow along with the additional demand for food. Climate change and its possible impacts on traditional food production practices must also be considered, and mariculture presents a unique opportunity. Agriculture produces about 10 billion tons annually of various products, most of which are plants. However, it is hard to imagine how this gure can grow much further, considering the toll of this production on diminishing resources of arable land, fertilizers and irrigation water. Strikingly, aquaculture production is a mere 1 percent of agriculture production, or about 100 million tons per year (according to FAO reports). This is astonishing in a world whose surface is 70 percent water, most of it an oceanic area that receives most of the world’s solar irradiation and that contains huge amounts of nutrients (e.g., 1011 tons of phosphorus), especially in the Pacic Ocean. -

Larvae of P. depressus did not metamorphose, but larvae of A. crassispina showed a high incidence of metamorphosis, especially in waters conditioned by coralline red algae or brown algae. High inductive activity for larval metamorphosis was detected in Corallina pilulifera-conditioned water during a 2.5-year investigation, but the activity was relatively low in February or March and in September, the off growth seasons of the alga. Strain JSM 100118T was able to grow with 0–13 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 2–5 %), at pH 5.5–10.0 (optimum pH 7.5) and at 5–50 6C (optimum 30–35 6C). The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid. The predominant respiratory quinone was menaquinone-7 and the major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0,C16 : 0 and C16 : 1v11c. The polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, an unknown glycolipid and an unknown phospholipid. The genomic DNA G+C content was 35.9 mol%. -

Among the habitats, especially the coasts along Japan, the Pacific coast of the U.S.A. and coasts along Australia have many species and large production. In Japan from ancient times abalones have been used as food. Japanese, as well as American, abalones are famous for their large size. Among abalones, H. gigantea (" Madaka-awabi "), H. gigantea sieboldi (" Megai-awabi "), H. gigantea discus (" Kuro-awabi") and H. discus hannai (" Ezo-awabi") are important in commerce. Abalone is prepared as raw fresh meat (" Sashimi") or is cooked after cut ting it from the shell and trimming the visceral mass and then mantle fringe from the large central muscle which is then cut transversely into slices. These small steaks may be served at table as raw fresh meat (" Sashimi") or may be fried, stewed, or minced and made into chowder. A large proportion of the abalones harvested in Japan are prepared as cooked, dried and smoked products for export to China. -

Sensory evaluation is a scientic approach to the measurement and analysis of how food and beverage products stimulate our senses. It is used routinely to guide food product research and development, production, manufacture and handling, and quality control. Information on the sensory properties of food and beverages can be related to differences in their chemical and physical compositions. The sensory differences also can be related to differences in consumer preference, offering insight on what drives product acceptance. Seafood evaluation A pilot study on the sensory properties of Pacic oysters and abalone was conducted at the CSIRO Sensory Laboratory in Sydney, Australia, by a team of scientists from CSIRO Food and Nutritional Sciences. It found differences among the sensory properties of samples produced in different growing conditions and regions. The pilot study began by establishing protocols for the preparation and tasting of the oysters and abalone, as well as a sensory evaluation vocabulary for odor, texture, avor and aftertaste for each product. Once consensus was reached, the samples underwent an objective sensory assessment by a panel of 10 trained assessors, whose role was to quantitatively rate the perceptual differences among the samples. -

Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada Email: [email protected] ________________________________________________________________________ Abstract The novel recognition that individual bodies of normal animals are actually inhabited by subcellular viral entities and membrane-enclosed microentities, prokaryotic bacterial and archaeal cells and unicellular eukaryotes such as fungi and protists has been supported by increasing evidences since the emergence of culture-independent approaches. However, how to understand the relationship between animal hosts including human beings and those non-host microentities or microorganisms is challenging our traditional understanding of pathogenic relationship in human medicine and veterinary medicine. In recent novel evolution theories, the relationship between animals and their environments has been deciphered to be the interaction between animals and their environmental evolutionary entities at the same and/or different evolutionary levels;[1-3] and evolutionary entities of the lower evolutionary levels are hypothesized to be the evolutionary background entities of entities at the higher evolutionary levels.[1,2] Therefore, to understand the normal existence of microentities or microorganisms in multicellular animal bodies is becoming the first priority for elucidating the ecological and evolutiological relationships between microorganisms and nonhuman macroorganisms. The evolutionary background entities at the cellular and subcellular levels in bodies of nonhuman vertebrate animals have been summarized recently.[4] In this paper, the author tries to briefly review the evolutionary background entities (EBE) at the cellular and subcellular levels for several selected invertebrate animal species. -

Initially a state recreational fishery started in 1959; the pinto abalone fishery closed in 1994 due to signs of overharvest. Populations have continued to decline since the closure, most likely due to illegal harvest and densities too low for reproduction to occur. Populations at monitoring sites declined 97% from 1992 – 2017. These ten sites originally held 359 individuals and now hold 12. The average size of the remnant individuals continues to increase and wild juveniles have not been sighted in ten years, indicating an aging population with little reproduction in the wild. The species is under active restoration by the department and its partners to prevent local extinction. Since 2009 we have placed over 15,000 hatchery-raised juvenile abalone on sites in the San Juan Islands. Federal listing under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) was evaluated in 2014 but retained the “species of concern” designation only.
