QUEEN’S BANNER Issue 14 Fall 2014 MRHS Welcomes Mrs. Reidy

Chatting with Cristina When asking our new principal, Mrs. Valerie Reidy how she likes it at Maria Regina so far, she responded: “I LOVE IT, write that down in all caps.” Being the first student to have met Mrs. Reidy and welcome her to our school community, I must say her love for Maria Regina shows tremendously. At first Mrs. Reidy was leary about coming to a small all girls school, from a large co- ed school, but her experience here so far is not what she had ex- pected. The girls at Maria Regina are not typical of what you might think of teenage girls; at MRHS they are caring, friendly, helpful, and spirited. When one walks into the doors of Maria Regina, Mrs. Inside our Reidy says, there is such a wonderful feeling of community and home. This feeling is a fantastic gift. At the crux of this concept we have the belief and conviction that all Our fearless editors humans are made by God-who loves us-and that we are made celebrate Halloween to love God and others. There were breakout sessions where the MRHS way! students could learn about vocation, chastity, end of life issues and faithful citizenship. Each of these were led by dynamic men and women who engaged with the students in profound ways. A highlight of the day was a beautiful celebration of mass. The chapel at St. Joseph’s Seminary in Dunwoodie, NY was packed and the spirit was certainly at work! The students who attended this workshop will be bringing what they learned to the next Respect Life Club meeting and then, in various ways, to our broader school community. Many Blessings! Many people criticized Joan for the things she said and joked about. However, she is one of the few brave women in comedy who was willing to speak her mind and ex- press her opinions through all the criticism and backlash she received. Joan’s career consisted of a headlining show in Las Vegas, a Grammy-Award nomi- nated comedy album, two best-selling books, a spot on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, wrote a movie, and had two of her own TV shows. However, this didn’t all come easy and without a price. Fox TV gave Joan her own series, The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers. Carson was so infuri- ated with Joan for leaving his show that he never talked to her again and spoke negatively about her to the pub- lic. Joan then experienced more set backs. Her show was cancelled, the entertainment industry seemed to aban- don her, and her husband of 22 years who supported her through everything had committed suicide. Joan, being the ambitious and risky women she was, picked herself up and started to reconstruct her career. She went back to New York and began her own daytime talk show. She joined E!’s Live From the Red Carpet team where she made an abundance of jokes about all the attending stars. Her catch phrase, “Who are you wearing?” became a staple on future award show fashion shows. Joan then became a host of Fashion Po- lice where she continued to critique and poke funny at celebrities. She also had her own reality TV show Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best. Many things Joan said were unbelievably harsh yet often had a ring of truth. Not many individuals have the guts to say how they really feel, especially broadcast it to the entire world. There are many people who believed that she was rude, offensive and needed a filter yet many who knew she said what they were thinking. She persevered through the setbacks in her life. Even if you agree with her choices in life or not, you have to recognize and appreciate her confidence and willingness to take risk in order to gain success in the male-dominated comedy world. She will be missed and our prayers go out to her and her family. Alena Scazafave ‘16

Women Of the World A new column featuring stories about inspirational women and their accomplishments.

If you ever think your are too young to accomplish something bigger than yourself, think again. Emily Matson and Julianne Goldmark conceived ‘‘Emi-Jay’’, the company that makes quality, modern day hair ties, when they were only thirteen. It all began when they were inspired by the head- bands worn on the popular ‘‘Gossip Girl’’. They decided to take a trip to LA's Fashion District and try to recreate the hair accessories. Emily’s mother was a client of Chris McMillan, a ce- lebrity hair stylist. When he saw the girls’ creations he gave Jennifer Aniston an Emi-Jay hair tie to wear to a movie premiere. After that, their hobby turned into a business. Emily and Julianna began to be featured in several magazines and articles. They then officially launched their website in 2009 and from there the business has continued to grow. Although the two girls are only freshman in college, they are CEOs of a multi-million dollar company. ‘’Emi-Jay’’ sells to over 2,000 retailers including Nordstrom, and has been featured in Oprah's O, The Oprah Magazine 12 times! The girls claim that their key to success was their passion for the company. Kara Fragola ‘16
