MIDDLE EAST 40 The Holy Land: Past, Present, and Future

2 For more than 130 years, we’ve sent our explorers across continents and into remote cultures, down to the oceans’ depths, and up the highest mountains, in an effort to better understand the world and our relationship to it. National Geographic Expeditions grew from this legacy as a way to invite others to explore—to encounter the wonders of the world up-close and in-depth, and to be transformed by the experience.

Through National Geographic Expeditions, you gain access to people and places. You’re enriched by the knowledge of our experts and guides, and by the local experts you meet along the way. And you give back. When you travel with us, you support the work of our explorers.

That is the National Geographic difference.

EXPLORE WITH OUR EXPERTS

You deepen your understanding of the world when you travel with us. From the scientists, photographers, and explorers who lead our trips to the local guides and experts we meet in the field, you'll be surrounded by people who are steeped in knowledge and insights about the places we visit.

STEVE BOYES Steve Boyes is a conservationist, biologist and National Geographic Emerging Explorer. He’s travelled across Africa, studying wildlife rehabilitation and biodiver- sity, and will lead the Southern Africa by Private Air expedition on May 28 2019.

CARROLL DUNHAM

Medical Anthropologist and filmmaker, Carroll Dunham has worked on over a dozen films for National Geographic. Carroll has become an expert in the Himalayas, having lived there for 25 years, and will lead the March 11 2019 departure of Bhutan: Kingdom in the Clouds.

LALY LICHTENFELD Laly Lichtenfeld is a conservationist and National Geographic Explorer who works with National Geographic’s Big Cats Initiative to preserve Tanzania’s lions, leopards and cheetahs. Laly will join the August 5 and September 2 departures of On Safari: Tanzania’s Great Migration.

TRAVEL AND SUPPORT EXPLORATION

When you travel with us, you help further the work of our scientists, explorers, and educators around the world. Every year, we distribute a portion of our proceeds to the National Geographic Society, creating more opportunities to work toward a planet in balance. To learn more, visit natgeo.com/giveback.

In Iceland, National Geographic grantees are examining how expanding meltwater lakes are impacting the rate of glacial retreat.

The Society is funding a geological survey of Egypt's Theban Mountains that will inform the archaeological preservation of ancient tombs and temples.

National Geographic photographer and grantee Ami Vitale is documenting the efforts of Kenya’s tribal communities to conserve resident megafauna, including the black rhinoceros.

CLOSER THAN YOU'VE EVER IMAGINED

We open doors around the globe, so that you can go behind the scenes to get a close-up view of the world's treasures and the work National Geographic is doing to help protect them.

On our new expedition to Georgia and Armenia, examine early Homo erectus skulls alongside a National Geographic researcher who excavated them (see page 44).

Visit a wildlife rescue centre in Vietnam's Cuc Phuong National Park, home to a National Geographic–supported project that is tackling the illegal pangolin trade (see page 66).

Meet experts at the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund's Rariseke Research Centre and track mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, where NG grantee Dian Fossey conducted research on gorillas for 18 years (see page 28).
